BIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Foes of Middle Snake Dams Voice Opinions For FPC at Pendleton Pendleton (U.PJ The Fed eral Power commission hearing on the application oi a group of Northwest power companies to build Mountain Sheep and Pleas ant Valley dams on the Middle Snake river opened its second day here today with opponents of the proposal taking the stand. Lyle R. Wolf, attorney for the National Hells Canyon associa tion, said he expected to present between 15 and 20 witnesses to day who will offer testimony op posing the granting of licenses to the private power companies. Other Side Heard Yesterday's opening day testi mony was limited to testimony In favor of granting the federal licenses. Allan A. Smith, Port land attorney representing the four utility groups proposing the construction, called some 40 witnesses to speak in behalf of granting the licenses. Arthur G. Hicks, assistant at torney general for Oregon, an nounced the state of Oregon will reserve its testimony until the bearings are reconvened in Washington, D.C. on July 24. In an opening statement yes terday, Smith said: "No other major hydroelectric project or combination of projects has the necessary preliminary work- of engineering, negotiating and fi nancing completed to the point where a prompt issuance of a license would permit getting a substantial block of new power on the line to avert a shortage by 1960." Other witnesses yesterday warned that the Northwest faces a power shortage In the imme diate foreseeable future and Back Stairs: Special Hook-Up for Ike By RICHARD E. MOONEY United Press Correspondent Washington U.R) Back stairs at Walter Reed Army Med ical Center: President Eisenhower got a special radio hook-up in his hos pital because he didn't want to hear the announcements and "pop" songs which are part of the fare on regular stations and Walter Reed's own small WRAH. The hospital has 1000 pink plas tic speakers round and thin, a little larger than a silver dollar which a patient can slip under his pillow. There are enough for each patient to have his own, with a choice of four stations WRAH (between 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m.) and three of Wash ington's commercial stations. Mr. Eisenhower gets a special pro gram of music piped directly in to his room, courtesy of WGMS, ".Washington's good music sta tion." The guest speaker at Walter Reed's graduation exercises last week was only coincidentally the chief civilian consultant on Pres ident Eisenhower's case. Actually Dr. Isidor Ravdin of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School was signed up for the talk several months ago. Ravdin is a major general in the Medical Corps' active reserve and a consultant both to the Army surgeon general and to this medical center. The center's commanding officer told the graduates Ravdin was one of the first doctors to go to Pearl Har bor after the Japanese attack In 1941. Madras Girl Drowns In Irrigation Pond Madras (U.PJ An irriga tion pond claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl near here yester day when a raft she and two other children were playing on capsized. Drowned was Beverly Ames, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mar vin G. Ames, Madras area farm ers. Officers said that the girl was playing on the raft with Bob Townsend, 9, and his sister, Rita. 8. When about 15 feet from shore the raft capsized and spill ed the children in about six feet of water. The accident occurred about 4:45 p.m. on the Earl Watson farm about four miles north of here near highway 97. HOW DO YOU DOT Waterbury, Conn. (U.R) Wil liam E. The $213 million proposed project would be the largest ever undertaken in the North west with private capital. The four companies seeking permis sion to build the dams are the Pacific Power & Light, Wash ington Water Power, Montana Water Power and Portland Gen eral Electric. The two dams would be locat ed above the mouth of the Sal mon and Imnaha rivers, about 75 miles south of Lewiston, Ida Pleasant Valley dam would be 534 feet high, highest of its kind in the United States and third highest in the world. 'Jada' Maintains Lead In L.A.-Tahafi Race Los Angeles-OJ.R) Bill Stur- gis 56-foot yawl, Jada, was maintaining a lead today over a five-boat fleet in the world's longest" yacht race from Los An geles harbor to Tahiti. The first radio position re ports in three days Monday night placed the Jada at 1328 miles out of Los Angeles harbor. John P. Scripps' scratch boat, Novia del Mar, was reported 60 miles behind the leader. The Quest, although 90 miles behind the Jada, held second place in the 3571-mile race on a handicap basis. The Celebes was placed about 180 miles be hind the Jada and the Viveka trailed at 360 miles. James Roosevelt (D-Calif.) will obtain his freedom from his sec ond wife "in one or two days" to marry his personal secretary, Mrs. Gladys Irene Owens. Mrs. Romelle Roosevelt Mon day petitioned in Superior Court for a final divorce decree from the eldest son of the late Presi dent. Roosevelt announced earli er he planned to marry Mrs. Owens "late in June" after his divorce became final. Roosevelt's attorney, Samuel Picone, was expected to file a similar petition for the congress man today. Picone said the final decree usually was entered with in "one or two days" after ap plication by either party. Attorney Arthur E. Schiffer- man filed the petition for Mrs. Roosevelt, a former nurse, on the first day Roosevelt or his ex-wife could apply for the final decree. Portland won first places In cities of its division in youth welfare, project of the year, pub lic safety and public school wel fare. Portland was third in avia tion, sports activities, trade pro motion and traffic safety. Astoria was second in cities of its class in civic improve ment and in project of the year and third in printed publica tions. Pendleton won a first place for public affairs. On Bing Crosby's "Hi Tor": "It's like the legend of Sleepy one has so much as smudged the white chalk drawing. A new notice has appeared on the hospital press room bulletin board. It's for newsmen who have just recovered from all the shots they had to take in antici pation of Mr. Eisenhower's now postponed trip to Panama. The notice anticipates the possibility of an extended visit to Gettys burg, where Mr. Eisenhower will recuperate. It says: "Dr. Walter F. Tkaeh assist ant White House physician will give Gettysburg shots this after noon, beginning at 2 p.m. Men going to Gettysburg must have innoculations against cholera, the bends, purple spotted fever and chronic ennui." Jury Undecided In Cause of Death - Shelby, N.C. (U.R) A coro ner's jury ruled Monday night that it was unable to determine whether there was foul play in the death of a bridegroom who fell to his death from an air liner. The six-man panel said that it could not determine "how or why" Oren A. Pruitt, 38, of Charlotte, N.C., fell 6,000 feet to his death from a Piedmont airliner. Pruitt was on his hon eymoon when he died. His bride said he apparently opened the door by mistake thinking it was the restroom door. They're Lightweight. How Credit References (Firm Names and Where Major Shipyard Strike Threatens West Coast Ports Portland (U.R) A major shipyard workers strike at Port land and other points on the West Coast was threatened to day as officials announced that a stalemate has been reached in negotiations designed to head off the walkout. A strike could go into effect Sunday at midnight unless an agreement is reached before that time. Negotiations are be ing held between the AFL-CIO Pacific Metals Trade Council and the Shipbuilders association of the Pacific. The across-the-board pay raise with employers countering with an offer of nine cents. Serious Stalemate Bill Way, president of the Portland Metal Trades Council, said last night that a "serious 1 stalemate" had been reached in the negotiations..
