Ever so many people had praised this half-hour movie which had won the grand prize for short subjects in Cannes. This fantasy had. at the film fes tival a few weeks ago, caused a sensation. Masterpiece of Beauty My daughter had told me It was a masterpiece of beauty, in termingling fantasy, pathos, comedy and tragedy a story of a red balloon which attaches it self in a human way to a little achoolboy after the child has res cued it from a lamp post where Clue Given on Missing Youngster Portland (U.R) Police here said today they had received a tip on what might be a clue to the disappearance of three-year-old Stephen Damman who van ished last October from in front of a grocery store in East Mea dow, N..Y. Authorities from Nassau coun ty, N. Y., wrote to police here saying that a woman hitchhiker accompanied by a child was seen in Minneapolis and was reported to have said she, was heading for Portland. The child was said to fit the description of the missing baby. The tip was given by the driv er of a car who had picked the woman and child up and taken them to a Minneapolis bus sta tion. The missing" youth is the son of Jerry L. and Marilyn Dam man. The mother has made ap peals through newspapers, radio and television and national mag azines. Local police were asked to check relief and welfare agencies for any report of a middle-aged, auburn-haired women with a small boy. Hop Organization Formed for Uniiy Portland (U.R) Hop pro ducers in four states formed a new organization here Saturday, designed to establish unity among hop producers of the Western states. Some 280 producers were on hand for the meeting which re sulted in the formation of the Hop Growers of America. Or ganizational work for the unit had been in process for the past year and a half. Included in the organization are producers from Oregon. Washington, California and Idaho. Pete Bradley, one of the Cali fornia representatives at the meeting, was seated as tempor ary chairman. Princess Anne Causes Flurry of Excitement London (UR) Five-year-old Princess Anne touched off a flurry of excitement at a polo match Sunday when she broke away from the side of her moth er. Queen Elizabeth, and dashed off into the crowd. Her aunt." Princess Margaret, ran behind her shouting. "Anne, Anne, wait for me:" But the youngster became temporarily lost in the crowd until a woman shouted, "Here she is." The lights went out in the pro jection room and I settled down to a half hour of anticipated sweetness. The screen flickered with strange unhuman looking images. This was no "red bal loon" movie. It was stark real ism a documentary of prison camps and crematoriums of the last war. Wilder Than Dante I wanted to run out into the cool rain. Within a few minutes I was plunged into the depths of hell as '"Night and Fog" un folded. Dante's imaginings were mile, to this inferno. I wanted to escape because I was ashamed of even belonging to the human race, but some thing made me stay. I wanted to close my eyes, but something made me look. "But for the grace of God there go I or a loved one," I told myself. Here was ugly, horrify ing history which had been re corded on film. Real, yet unbe lievable history! If the human race can see history rather than just read about it, perhaps it might learn. Staggering Impression I imagine this documentary finished and 'The Red Balloon" started as I was mentally and emotionally staggering, and one clear thought emerged: Surely some spiritual goodness must rise from these tons of embers and ashes of human torture, as it did almost 2.000 years ago. Before the devilish question, what spiritual goodness, could destroy my hope, a red balloon floated before my eyes and I took quick flight into this fan tasy to save my sanity. Though days have passed, I feel I would rather be a red bal loon than a human being, and when you have seen "Night and Fog" realism and "The Red Bal loon" fantasy, so will you. Well-Known Oregon Demo Leader Dies Portland (U.R) Elton Wat kins, 74. a former United States representative from Oregon's third district and a well known Democratic leader, died here yes terday morning after a brief ill ness. Watkins had remained active in his law practice here until he was taken ill last week. He had long been active in politics, having been a candidate France 'Confused,' Gen. De Gaulle Says Credon, France (U.R) Gen. Charles De Gaulle broke a two-year-old political silence Sunday to declare that France is politi cally "confused." But the wartime leader of the Free French said nothing about whether he planned a political comeback. for U. S. senator, mayor of Port land and serving as attorney gen eral of Oregon by appointment for a brief time in 1919. Joyce Brothers Keeps 'Ring Championship' New York (U.R) Dr. Joyce Brothers retained her title as boxing expert on 'The S64,000 Challenge" Sunday night when she knocked out her challenger for a $4000 purse. The 28-year-old psychologist of New York, who was the sec ond contestant to win the top prize of "The S64.000 Question," answered correctly a three-part question concerning champion ships won by American boxers at the 1952 Olympic Games. John Holt, also of New York came out fighting but was kayo ed by the same question. Marine Capt. Richard Mc Cutcheon of Columbus, Ohio, first winner of $64,000, was all set to match his knowledge of cookery with that of challenger Joseph Amblard. but time ran out and the match resumes next Sunday.. The National Asso ciation for the Advancement of Colored People announced plans to bring charges against the post. NAACP officials said they would charge the Omaha Post No. 1 with violating Nebraska's civil rights law. The Rev. A. Houston Gordon, a Chicago Negro minister attend ing the Council of the Congre gational Churches of America here, said the post wouldn't let him stay at the club after Legion officials learned his race. A white minister, the Rev. Edward A. Hawley of Chicago, had registered for a room he and Gordon were to occupy at the club. Gordon said that when the Legion discovered he was a Negro officials said the room was no longer available. Gordon is a veteran and a member of the Legion. Hawley is not. Austin Takes National Marble Championship Tallahasse, Fla. (U.R) A 14-year-old lad from Los Alamites. Calif., fought his way to the na tional marbles championship here by. coming back from the "losers bracket" to annex the crown. King of the Veterans of For eign Wars tourney was Richard R. Austin. He fought from be hind to win matches over Ore gon's champion, Gordon Jones, of Prineville, and the Tennessee and Alabama champions. Earlier Jones, along with Kenneth Molette of Weesbury, Kentucky, Robert Godsey, of Greenville, Tennessee and Wayne Vickery of Adrian, Mich igan, had moved into a favorites spot, carrying the only four un defeated records into the final round.
