Here he studies form chart after getting urgent call from his wife to "come light home." (International) Gibralter Bridge Would Move Traffic Over Busy Sea Washington The Spanish government is considering a road and railway bridge to link Europe and Africa at the Strait of Gilbraltar, where fabled Her cules tore apart a prehistoric mountain range and created the famous "pillars" that bear his name. The Pillars of Hercules Eu rope's 1,400-foot Rock of Gibral tar and Africa's twice-as-high Jebel Musa headland stand at the strait's eastern end. They are 14 miles apart. The proposed bridge would rise near the western entrance of the 35-mile-long strait. Reach ing from a point west of Tarifa, Spain, to the opposite Spanish Moroccan coast, it must leap a gap of about 15 miles. Phoenicians Pioneered The bridge is of suspension design, with cement piers footed deep in the strait" floor, and roadways slung high enough to permit passace of the largest ocean liners. If successful, it will speed land traffic high above one of the world's busiest and most strategic sea lanes. For 30 centuries, since Phoe nician traders nosed their purple-sailed galleys from the sheltered Mediterranean into the open Atlantic, the Gilr)ral tar passage has been a key link in sea commerce. Completion of the Suez Canal at the Mediterranean's eastern outlet in 1869 enormously step ped up the traffic. As commer cial and naval fleets shifted to the new global shortcut, the strait's military value also went to a new high. Automatically, its Rock of Gibraltar stronghold in British hands since 1704 became a vital station on the empire lifeline. Through the ages, world inter est in Gibraltar has focused chiefly on its use as a channel between ocean and sea. Yet as lar back as the 8th century a northward movement of invad ers across the strait changed the course of Europe's destiny and wrote the opening chapter of "The Rock's martial history. The event was the invasion of Spain by the Moors, who in 711 fortified the great gray crag that they called Jebel Tarik, or Hill of Tarik, in honor of the con quering Moorish leader. The " name "Gibraltar" for rock and strait is a correction of the old Arabic phrase. Two-Continent Road Link Today, proponents of the Spanish bridge point out that the two-continent span could bring together a network of transport lines to stretch event ually from the Baltic Sea to the tip of South Africa. Such a union of continents would emphasize the striking structural and climatic similari ties between northwest Africa and the Iberian Peninsula. Cut off from Europe by the high Pyrenees ranges, Spain mirrors the African pattern of oasis and desert, windswept plateau and dry, rugged hills that gave rise to the old geographic saying, "Africa begins at the Pyrenees." The mountains of southern Spain that continue beyond the strait as Africa's Atlas chains were joined long ago in an isth mus there. Then came a great cataclysm of nature that an cients called Hercules' prowess. Whether the mountains cracked in sudden upheaval or slowly disintegrated no one knows; but the floor of the strait is relatively shallow for an oceanic channel. Because of this factor, engineers long have advocated a tunnel under the strait. The most recent of such pro posals was for a novel circular or oblong tunnel that would carry an endless succession of four "capsule trains between Tarifa and the international zone of Tangier. Posed against the new bridge plan, the tunnel idea is reported to have come out second best. TOO GLADLY FOR ADLAI Sprihgfield, 111. (U.R) A.
