Use Tribune Want Ads Writer Says Leaning Tower of Pisa Won't Be Known as 'The Tiltin' Hilton' By H. D. OUIGG United Press Correspondent New York flJ.R) Reports from Italy hint that the Leaning Tower of Pisa may have to be rebuilt. You probably know that the leaning tower in the Middle Ages was one of the seven won ders of the world. And you prob ably can't name the other six. It's time we brought the list up to date, using wonders that we all wonder at every day. Here with, the wonders of today's world: Knee Deep in Bottles 1. The no-return beer bottle. Before the advent of this sturdy monument to convenience, man kind was knee deep in bottles, waiting to be returned. KXX FROM THE FAMOUS fyQ M.C.P. Conrad Hilton is go ing to buy the tower, turn it into a hotel, and name it "The Tiltin' Hilton." Nor is there substance to the report that it is going to be turn ed into a restaurant called "The Leaning Tower of Pizza." ' There was a rumor, some months ago, that the Leaning Tower sent a note to Big Ben in London. The note said: "You've got the time and I've got the in clination." This is true. We wouldn't end this piece on a false note. Around Hollywood By ALINE MOSBY United Press Correspondent Hollywood (U.R) Will the Martin and Lewis "divorce" stick? Most of their associates figure the two will star as singles but e v e n t u a lly drift back to gether again. Dean and Jerry were two unknowns who never caught the Aline Mosby - fancy of the public until they became a team at the 500 club in Atlantic City, in 1947. Most of their coworkers think the two will "sooner or la ter realize their big success comes as a team." One of their employers says, "Look, I've been going through their fights for years. They may get over this battle next week." But D e a n and Jerry insist American Publisher Injured in London London U.R) American publisher Victor F. Their associates agree they would have success as singles. Martin already has been offered the movie version of "Pa jama Game" and Jerry has re ceived permission to direct his own pictures at Paramount stu dio. But even Martin admits, "We'll make less money as sin gles." Their friends say even tually they'll "make reunion pic tures like Betty Hutton had fare well tours." Most show business teams stick together as a matter of fi nances. The Andrew Sisters parted two years ago and tried "singles." They weren't as happy with the arrangement as they had figured, and the girls are back together now in Las Vegas, Nev. Bud Abbott and Lou Costello have battled down the years, as many business partners do. But they always went out on the stage together to make their live lihood. One way they worked out their troubles was to agree to keep their personal lives sep arate. . If Martin and Lewis are through making pictures togeth er as they claim, Hollywood will say goodbye to one of the best shows in town one the public never sees. The boys backstage often were funnier than the an tics they put on film. Somehow movie sets won't be the same without Dean and Jer ry. But, as their pals say, "Don't worry they'll be back." Father Not Biller In Child's Death i Seattle (U.R) A state repre sentative whose 4 - year - old daughter was slain and assaulted by a 12-year-old boy said today he felt no bitterness toward the youngster. "I just feel sorry," said Rep. Richard Ruoff (R-Seattle). "I'm not bitter. That wouldn't solve anything." The body of Ruoff's daughter, Kathryn, was found under the floor of a neighborhood garage Sunday. Shortly afterwords, Ray John Barker admitted choking the girl to death. "Think how that mother must feel," said Ruoff. "A kid must be completely insane during the period when he commits such an act of violence and doesn't know what he is doing. "He should not be locked in a cell and forgotten. But he should never be released until there is no possibility of danger." The Barker boy will undergo a clinical examination this week and findings will be presented to Juvenile Court Judge William G. Long when he returns from New York. Long will decide if he will hear the case or refer it to the King County Superior Court. D-rerteT Reasons for Cut In Aid Bill Talked By Harris Ellsworth By HARRIS ELLSWORTH Congressman, 4th District Washington What happened to the bill to authorize and addi tional amount of money, for' for eign aid was not the result of party politics. The leadership on both sides of the House strongly endorsed the President's request for $4-9 billion. They likewise criticised the action of the House Foreign Affairs committee in cutting the amount down to $3.8 billion a slash of more' than a cool bil lion. Leadership , on both sides urged the House to restore to the bill at least half of the cut made by the committee. Never theless, the House by an- im pressively large vote rejected the amendment to increase the S3. 8 billion committee bill by $600 million in other words restore half the cut. What caused both the Demo crat and Republican members to revolt against their leader ship? I think the trouble is that only a very few . people know enough about our foreign, aid program to have an informed opinion as to what we actually should spend on foreign aid. Much of the information needed to evaluate the foreign aid pro gram is "classified", or r secret. Testimony given by the military people in support of the heavy demands for foreign military aid was wobbly. Whether the inadequacy of the testimony was due to security requirements, or merely indi cated recklessness in spending the money, could not be easily determined by the average mem ber. But the Congressmen do know that we have poured more than $60 billion into foreign aid sinoe the war. They know that Federal taxes are oppressively high. They know that the" na tional debt is at a staggering figure. I think the majority -of the members figured they pre ferred to take a chance on being on the side of economy than to authorize too much. Robinson Jr., 23, was booked on suspicion of felony drunk driving today after his sports car struck four parked cars and police said he failed to pass an intoximeter test. A passenger in Robinson's car, Martin Barth, 37, . was thrown though the window of the car and doctors at Santa Monica hospital said he may lose his right eye because of injuries suffered. Young Robinson, son of the famed movie "tough guy" was not hurt. Police at the West Los Angeles substation where Robinson was being held said that in view of the felony complaint the youth could not be released on bail and must await a habeas corpus order through his lawyer. Robinson has been involved in a series of scrapes with the law in recent years but a police of ficial described today's action as "serious." Last April 24 he was treated for an overdose of sleeping tab lets after he was found un conscious in his apartment. His wife, Frances, 27, divorced him earlier this year because of his drinking. The elder Robinson now is starring in a Broadway play. battery was filed. The woman's condition was considered grave when she was admitted to sur gery. Grants Pass Police Chief Carl M. D. Tay lor. -.. . Taylor said Siskiyou county is 7.4 points, or about 42 per cent below the state average assess ment, which is now at a level of about 25 per cent of true market value. If the 25 per cent state average is to be taken as a standard, Taylor said he would bring Siskiyou's assessed values up to the required level. Acfivify of Aphids Increasing in Area Activity of green sphids has been rapidly increasing on ce real crops, legume, hay and seed crops in Jackson county, W. B. (Ben) Tucker, . county agriculture agent, said today. The insects attack all parts of the green plant, especially stems and leaves. Tucker said. The plants suffer from loss of plant juices, and seed production as well as forage is reduced in pro portion to the aphid population, he pointed out. Applications of malath ion either as a spray or wettable powder is recommended. The county agent advised 8 to 10 ounces of actual malathion per acre. If dusters are used, four or five per cent dust is recommend ed in applying 10 to 15 pounds per acre. Dust can also be ap plied by airplane. . Tucker said cool, wet weath er this season has been more favorable for development of aphids than weather-in average years. . .
