Sally My mother is opposed to meT e e e Mrs. C.T.A. I am very scared for the future of my daughter who is now 15 and has been, ever since the age of 3 and 4, deadly in earnest about becom ing a great actress. To begin with, I would have reservations about her realizing her ambition because I do not think too highly of the life of an actress much as I enjoy the stage and like the personalities on the stage. I think a girl is happier having a family. In this case, however, I am afraid of . real tragedy because Sally has a fixation about being an actress that stands in the way of her development. She really does nothing to fit herself for anything. She neglects her studies on the ground that they have no relation to an acting career, and she refuses to learn housework because she expects 1,200 Attend County June Dairy Festival More than 1,200 people at tended Jackson county's second annual June Dairy Festival Sat urday in the Hubbard- Wray showroom. Emeritus Consultant In Medicine, Mayo Clinic Emeritus Pruiessor ul Medicine, Mayo Foundation rough places and make her skin smooth aeain. What she tells me is that, for a long time, she avoided her classmates, even when they tried to be friendly with her. She avoided them because she thought they were just pitying her and trying to be kind. And so she remained solitary and would never go to a dance. Then, one day," she went through a hospital for the blind where she found that many of these handicapped people so much more handicapped than she was were happy; they were wonderful; they talked of the beauty they felt all around them; Council to be rich and have servants. Her attitude is completely negative. She has refused to take piano lessons and gave up dancing because she could not be the hit of the class, after a few lessons. She does not even do well in her school plays, and I see not the slightest sign of tal ent, unless tantrums may be con sidered talent. I am terribly afraid for the future, as I fear she will not be fit to live with and not be able to take care of herself. e e e Sally My family has been disappointed in me from my earliest days. No matter how hard I try, I cannot possibly please or impress them. Maybe, if I become famous they will learn they were mistaken about me. I would like to get into drama school, but always my parents put their own ideas ahead of my ambition. Sometimes I feel as if there is no sense in living. e e e The Council: Sally's attitude is completely negative, but that is probably her response to a negative attitude on the part of her parents. Sally suffers from the feeling that she cannot pos sibly gain her parents' approval. We suspect there is a key to a very destructive misunderstand ing in her mother's observation that she would not want a stage life for her daughter. This feeling is understandable. but it should not be pursued in a negative way. There is still time to show a positive interest in Sally. She should be con fronted with the facts of life in relation to a stage career. She should be familarized with the background training requir ed, with the qualifications in skills and training. If a positive attitude is taken, Sally may discover new inter ests and skills and go off hap pily in another direction; on the other hand, her parents may discover that she really pos sesses the capacity for a stage career. Sally's mother has allowed a natural fear for her daughter's future to distort her attitude. Many little girls dream of being Sarah Bernhardts, but most of them resolve that dream into something quite sensible, while a few of them go on to substan tial achievement m the field of their dreams.
