B. Cordy, and growers should be on the alert for the disease. The bacterical disease enters the tree through blossoms and on reaching the cambium layer spreads up and down the branch. Although blossoms and leaves die they do not fall from the branch and remain firmly in tact. Cordy said. Blight is found in pear, apple, and pyracantha and once started may be controlled only by cut ting, he said. The cut should be made from 12 to 18 inches be low any visible discoloration. In cases of bad infection the use of ziram spray is used to prevent further infection of the orchard, Cordy added. When cutting off infected tree branches, cutting tools should be sterilized after each cut. Cordy suggested using a solution of two tablets of mercuric cyanide and two tablets of mercuric choride in a pint of water for sterilization tpoU and painting cuts. Cordy said fruit growers in the area have cut out blight so appearance of the disease has been reduced. Dead line Sunday Classified is at st noon Saturday. Juno 19, 1958 The Medical Roundup PROBLEMS OF THE TEEN-AGER Five years ago I told of a fine book I had found on the "Facts of Life and Love for Teen - agers, by Dr. Evelyn M. Duvall. It was the best I had ever seen on the subject, written frank ly and hon estly and with a touch that teen - agers WUtri A.lvre would enjuj. They could see that Dr. Duvall is a real person, a good scout, who knows what is going on, and who will not preach. She will just try to help youngsters to get good answers to the ques tions in their minds. Actually, the book needs to be read by those thousands of par ents who keep saying, "What on earth am I going to do with this teen-age child of mine? I can't understand him (or her)." That many thousands of persons loved the book has been shown by the fact that it has gone through eight printings and now a new edition. Dr. Duvall tells of Lester Crow's study of more than 1600 boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 17. The boys said they liked a girl who acts like a girl and not a tomboy. They liked a girl who doesn't hang around 5f The Family Council editor's Not: The Family Council consists of a indite, a psychiatrist, a newspaper editor, a women's pace editor and two newspaper writers. He's come back dis torted from the Army. Leonard I have just come home after two years in tbe Army as a draftee and find our home full of tension, bitterness and quarreling. I am the oldest of four children, and we are spaced about two years apart. My brother, 13, is the youngest and there are two sisters in be tween. My parents seem to be ignor ing all that the modern world has learned about bringing up children and are creating a mess of trouble for themselves and us. They will not let my younger sister go out on dates at all, and they are being so strict with my older sister that I am ' certain she will soon take to deceiving them, if she has not done so al ready. I have tried to reason with my parents and to make them un derstand that in this age of world tension, sudden death and broken lives, it is not possible for young people to accept all the conventions by which they were brought up. Our parents seem to be demanding trouble from their children. R. S. W. rm afraid our boy has come back from the Army with distorted ideas. I do not know what experience he had to make him feel that way, and he doesn't seem friendly enough for me to find out. I do know that the tensions and quarrels he complains of did not exist while he was away or before he went away. It is not true that we are over strict with our older girl. We let her go on dates and trust her, but we object to Leonard draw ing her into his new circle of friends because they strike me as a fast and loose crowd. As for our younger girl, she is only 15, and we think it is reasonable to want to know whom she goes out with and to veto "steady dating." Leonard makes us out to be old-fashioned kill-joys. Actually I am young enough to have got into the world war and my wife and I are young enough to enjoy dancing and parties. And we are both young enough to have a clear memory of the pitfalls and Life is Worth Living Emeritus Consultant In Medicine, Mayo Clinic Emeritus fTuiessor ut Medicine. Mavn Foundation with a bunch of boys or tough girls. The boys wanted a girl who is pretty and feminine. They wanted her to have a friendly smile, good humor, good intelligence, and good sense. They wanted her to be a good dancer and to be good fun. They wanted a girl who could carry on an intelligent conver sation. Girls' Preference The girls said that they want ed a boy to be well-groomed, which is surprising in these days when so many boys and girls try to look as sloppy as they possi bly can! The girls wanted a boy with good manners. They did not like a show-off. They wanted a lad who could get along well with people. He should be cour teous, kind, considerate and in telligent, and with a fine per sonality. They would like him to be able to talk about something beside movies and baseball. They would like him to be "just affectionate enough." In another big study of high school students the boys and girls criticized each other for being careless, thoughtless, dis respectful, sex-driven and loud. The boys were particularly crit ical of many girls for not being "natural," or normally respon sive, to a friendly approach, and for being so often touchy, money-minded, childish, and flighty. In a study made of university the problems we faced as young sters. My wife and I are agreed that Leonard is trying to mislead our other children. i Tha Council: Leonard is clear ly in a resentful state of mind. His description of this age as "world tension; sudden death and broken lives," reflects a pre occupation with this resentment. Leonard should realize that his parents also lived through such times and that the world has always suffered from wars and "sudden death." He obvious ly is one of the more fortunate, being able to return to a good home after two years of peace ful if unwelcome service. He needs straightening out, or he may really bring about a real disruption and undermining of this family. He evidently has too little knowledge of his parents' background and early life, and this deficiency should be made up by them. He has probably ob tained a half-baked - knowledge of child-rearing from the wrong book or magazine article, and the parents may be wise to find support for their position in an acceptable book or article. Young people often demand such authority, preferring it to the actual experience of parents. (Copyright 1S56, General Features Corp.) It is good to find in this book sensible discussion of homosexu ality, normal sexuality, and the problems of the unwed mother. One of the best things in the book is the fine description of the differences between "loving" just for the sake of petting, and loving that is real, or the differ ences between puppy love " or mutual infatuation, and love that will endure.
