Stevenson promptly replied that be was "much pleased." Kefauver insisted that his move has no political implica tions. He said he still is fighting "to win" the Democratic presi dential nomination over Steven son and other hopefuls and that his "present" position is that he would not accept the vice presi dential nomination. - But Kefauver made the first move Sunday in apologizing for his personal attacks on Steven son during their recent presi dential primary battles. He said that "I got mad and lost my head" and "got somewhat out of character" in criticizing Stev enson. Would Join Campaign He said that if Stevenson should win the Democratic nom ination again, he would cam paign for him. Stevenson, in a telegram to Brawling Marks Introduction of New Nazi Party Miltenberg, Germany (U,R) Otto Strasser, a former con fidant of Adolf Hitler, brought his new Nazi party in to the open Sunday at a found con ference marked by brawling, bloodshed and rioting. Shouting youths fired salvoes of tear gas into the conference and fought a hand to hand bat tle with riot police before order was restored. It was a scene m the best Nazi tradition in this old Bavarian town. The anti-Strasser youths surg ed into the hotel conference room with shouts of "get down and "give up!" as Strasser be gan addressing the delegates gathered here to found his new German Social Union. Fights broke out between the delegates and the invaders aid shots were fired from gas pis tols. Strasser clung to the ros trum and shouted "we will nev er give it up" as the fight swirl ed around the floor, fcot police swarmed in and broke it up. Strasser. who spent 21 years in exile after he broke with Hit ler, said the demonstration was a provocation but he did not say who organized the riot. Obser vers believed the demonstrat ors were Socialist and Com munist youths from Frankfort and Hanau. A Genuine Willard At last, a quality battery at a low price. Although Kefauver refused to count himself out of the presi dential race, many Democrats think his chances suffered near-mortal blow with his Flori da and California defeats. There has been speculation that he might accept the number two spot on a presidential ticket headed by either Stevenson or New York Gov. Averell Harri- man. Could Aid Adlal If Kefauver threw all of his delegate strength to Stevenson and if his delegates remained faithful to his lead, Stevenson would have nearly enough con vention votes to win the presi dential nomination on the first ballot. otevenson told newsmen in Chicago Sunday before learn ing of Kefauver's apology that he, Stevenson, was "the man to beat" for the nomination. He said he had "probably better than 500" convention votes now but refused to speculate on how many roll calls would be re quired to win the nomination, The number of votes needed to win the Democratic nomin ation is 686V4. Kefauver has 104 convention votes at pres ent, according to a United Press survey. President Nominates Director of Mines Washington U.R) Presi dent Eisenhower today nominat ed Marling J. Chrysler Strike Vote Due To Be Taken Thursday Detroit (U.R) A strike vote against the Chrysler Corp., De troit's largest single employer, will be taken Thursday by the members of the United Auto Workers Local 212. The workers agreed at a mass meeting Sunday to authorize un ion officials to set up machinery for a strike vote. The decision to take the vote stems from a 10-day dispute be tween Chrysler and the workers which brought six walkouts in the last seven working days and idled 14.000 workers at eight plants. If the strike is called it would idle 15,000 workers at 10 plants. The walkouts resulted from union charges the company was trying to start a speedup. A Chrysler spokesman denied the charges and said the walkouts were "wildcat strikes." At Sunday's meeting, Emil Mazey, UAW secretary-treasurer, and Pat Caruso, local president, both urged the workers to re turn to their jobs today. The two told the men: "Go back to work and let the union handle this."
