TWELVE MEDFORD (OBECOIT) MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday, Juna 17, 1956 Funeral Escorts to Be Discontinued The Medford police depart ment will discontinue escort service for funeral processions beginning July 1, City Manager Robert Duff reported Friday. Reason for discontinuance of the service, Duff said, is pres sure of regular police work. He pointed out that each funeral occupies an officer and police equipment for 30 to 45 minutes. In the 12 month period from July 1, 1954, to June 30, 1935, there were a total of 241 funer als in Medford. The city manager explained that relatively few cities in Oregon now provide police es cort service for funerals. He said escort discontinuance was discussed a year ago and the current decision followed the last city budget meeting. Duff indicated that discontin uance of a few other services now extended by the police de partment is also under consid eration, but no decisions hive as yet been made.
