Laurine's CARPET HOUSE 400 East Main at Riverside Phone 3-5182 Effectiveness of DEW Line Against Missiles Question San Francisco U.R Brig. Gen. Stanley T. Wray, chief of the Air Force's electronic de fense system, says America's Arctic radar net will be more than 90 per cent effective against any airplane now on the draw ing boards. But its effectiveness against intercontinental missiles is still a question, he added. ' Speaking at a news conference prior to a speech before the So ciety of Military Engineers yes terday. Gen. Wray said the string of Distant Early Warning (DEW Line) radar stations stretched across the far north would be completed in less than two years. Greater Rang Radar being installed in this chain will have a range greater than has ever been disclosed and "will be effective against any air-breathing vehicle on the drawing boards at this time," he said. Wray said security forbade him to estimate the radar's effectiveness- against the inter continental ballistic missile, but he admitted they do not come into the "air-breathing" cate gory. He said the DEW Line will be able to give interceptor bases a four to six hour advance warn ing of approaching enemy air craft. The system will never be 100 per cent effective because of the continual competition between developments of offensive and defensive equipment and tech niques, he said.
