Seaion Urged io Slow Plans (or Fisheries Bureau Washington iU.B Repre tentatives of 13 conservation groups has been urged Interior Secretary Fred A. Seaton to slow down plans to establish a new bureau of fisheries until Con gress can act. The conservationists, who met with Seaton at his request, told the new interior secretary they are "unalterably opposed to the new bureau" which would split ' the Fish and Wild Life Service. The meeting was closed to the press. But the conservationists met with reporters later. They said they told Seaton to slow down plans to set up the new ' bureau on July-1 in order to give Congress a chance to take ap propriate action. Assured 'Second Look' In a statement after the closed door session, Seaton said he as sured the conservationists a "sec ond look" would be given the pending reorganization of the fishery function of the depart ment. Seaton said he was inter ested "in examining all sides of this important question." Seaton also assured his callers that "the department is continu ing its vigorous efforts to resist transfer of Wichita national ref uge land to the military." The White House announced on June 4 that the new bureau would be established to take over administration of all fishery activities now vested in the fish and wild life service. C. R. Gutermuth, vice presi dent of the wild life management institute and a spokesman for all the conservation groups, said Seaton was told that separation of the service would lead to cost- ly duplication of effort. Finding of Body Ends Two-Week Hunt Kelso, Wash U.R) A two week long manhunt ended yes terday afternoon when Cowlitz county sheriff's deputies found the body of Manthus H. Witty, 60, in the Cowlitz river about two miles north of here. Witty had been the object of an intensive search since the shotgun slaying on June 2 of his former wife, Gladys, 49, and Marvin Marcrost, 32, in Mrs. Witty's apartment in Kelso. Witty had been wanted for questioning about the shootings. His car was found abandoned near the river. Friday, June 15. 1958 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE Dynamite Blast To Clear Way for Actual Building of Brownlee Dam Brownlee. Ore. (U.R) A blast of 2,800 pounds of dyna mite was touched off at Brown lee today to clear the way for the start of actual construction on a dam that could nearly dou ble southern Idaho's electrical power output if it is completed. BEWARE OF CAT Wilmington, N.C. (U.R) Miss Reta Rema, a Swiss employee of the United Nations, was asked by police to keep her cat con fined for two weeks. The ani mal, a "usually-gentle" Indian jungle cat, Thursday bit a hotel housekeeper who came too close to the bed. The explosion was to complete a 2,555-foot long tunnel that will divert the Snake river from its normal course and permit con struction of the S63.000.000 Brownlee dam designed to gen erate 360,000 kilowatts of power. Brownlee is one of three high ly controversial r5ck-fill dams to be constructed on the deepest river gorge on the North Amer ican continent by Idaho Power company. Construction of the other two dams in the 7,000-foot chasm at Oxbow and Hells Can yon has not yet started. 'Calculated Risk' However, the three dams may never be completed and Idaho Power company is proceeding with construction on a "calcula ted risk" basis. Public power groups, despite defeats in two years of Federal Power commission hearings, have called for replacement of the three low dams with a single high dam in Hells canyon. The House Interior committee is scheduled to vote on a bill for a federally-built high dam next week. But Idaho Power company of ficials were confident the bill would be defeated or that Presi dent Eisenhower, who advocates private development of natural resources, would veto them. River Too High Water from the Snake river will not be diverted through the tunnel for about 30 days because the river is now too high to per mit construction of two small cofferdams just beyond the tun nel opening. The cofferdams will back the river up to a height where it will enter the tunnel opening, which is now slightly above the level of the water. Once the river is diverted through the tunnel, water will be pumped out of that part of the river channel which is by passed by the tunnel, and the 395-foot high dam will be erect ed in that area. Brownlee dam will be one of the 15 highest dams in the world. It will be double the height of the Idaho state capitol building and 107 feet higher than the, dome of the nation's capitol in Washington, D.C. Officials of Idaho Power com pany, the largest electrical pow er utility in the state, said the big Brownlee unit alone would about double the firm's power output in southern Idaho and eastern Oregon. 'Silly Statement' But when I interviewed Pres ley during his tour here he scoffed, "Thafs a silly state ment." "I don't try to be sexy," said Presley, a sleepy-looking man of 21 with a drawl learned in his native Memphis. Tenn. 'I don't do any .vulgar move ments. I just do a lot of wigglin, and quiverin' but I never do a bump and grind. I can't stand still when I sing so the kids can't sit still." Presley thinks the bobby-soxers' behavior is "just great." He does not mind that young fe-: males with braces on their teeth ' trail him around the streets and send him neckties and billfolds tucked into romantic letters. i Fans' Antics Liked "I like it," he grinned. "The time you worry is when they stop throwin' themselves at you." In private life Presley and his four Cadillics cut quite a ro matic figure, too. He dates var ious young women nearly every night A year and a half ago Presley was an unknown Tennessee truck driver. He paid to have a song recorded and a record agent heard it and signed him. He's conquered TV and personal appearance tours. Next the pub lic will see Elvis as a dramatic actor. He returns to Hollywood in August for his first picture under his seven-year contract with producer Hal Wallis at Par-! amount studio. "I 'm not going to sing in the picture." he said. "Singers come ; and go they die out.
