17: Ml Sc rj3J.- 5S- - 7 ' IN WONDERLAND Little Jo Ann PhUlips reaches out a cautious hand of greeting to get acquainted with "Junior," a new-born fawn as mother "Bambi" watches quietly at Stonewall, Ga. Guy Hayes, Atlanta Journal photographer, captured this appealing scene. Which brings to mind that deer, a few weeks older than "Junior," can be very dan gerous, so while on that vacation trip this summer do not permit your children to approach these animals within striking distance. On The Side By E. V. Durling (Distributed by King Faaturot Syndicate. Inc.) I law a man wearing a wed ding ring on the third linger of his right hand. It has been claimed that is how a man should wear a wedding ring. A ring on the right hand incidates authori ty, on the left hand it indicates submission. So, it logically fol lows that the wife who agrees to "obey" her husband should wear her wedding ring on her left hand. And the husband, whose duty it is to tee that the wife agrees to keep her promise to obey, should wesr his ring on the right hand. Asking Queries from clients. Q. Can. you name a successful stage play,' not a war play, in which there was no love story, or love in terest in the plot? A. How about the one titled 'The Women" by Clare Boothe? . . . Q. What is an "Apple Knocker"? A. It is a nick name given to people from the apple growing country of the atate of Washington. Bing Crosby is a former apple knocker. Among The Married What is the difference between criticism, correction, complain ing and what is styled "nag ging"? Research as to life among the married indicates the majori ty of husbands considered "nag ging" the greatest fault of most wives. Now many men who work for a woman boss complain they are also subjected to excessive "nagging." The wives and wom en executives maintain that no matter how justified any criti cism, correction or complaint is the man calls it "nagging." I have Instructed our horses and women experts to thoroughly check this situation. Psychology According to color psycholo gists, yellow and red are the colors which inspire people to greater and more enthusiastic efforts, Is your secretary using a black typewriter? How is she doing? Why not get her a nice red typewriter? Or a yellow typewriter? Or a two-toned type, colored yellow and red. Or a yellow typewriter with a red cover. Try it. Perhaps you may be able to increase her enthusi asm and efficiency. Many people misunderstand the word "blarney" and conse quently use it incorrectly. Blar ney does not mean insincere flat tery. It is a sort of sweet, per suasive eloquence used to influ ence another person, especially a beautiful female. So They Say Sagittarian (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) people are very frank. Sagittari an women even offer honest opinions as to other women's hats. A- type of frankness very rare among females . . . Cancer (June 22-July 23) women are very clever shoppers. They are born bargain hunters. They put their hearts and souls into their shopping. They even flirt with butchers to get good cuts of meat. Or, so say the stargazers. Asides In 1895 a Duryea automobile was offered for sale for $1,000. The advertisement further read: "The Duryea uses ordinary stove gasoline and costs less than one half a cent a mile to run" ... It was Victor Hugo who observed, "when a woman is speaking to you, listen to what she says with her eyes." Horses And Women For a woman to take off weight is not difficult. That is, generally speaking. It is taking it off in stated places that is dif ficult. If you can originate a method for clipping off bulges at stated places on a female frame your fortune is made. For example, take a woman with these measurements bust, 36 Vi waist, 26, and hips, 37. She is plump in the wrong places. How ever, take three inches off her waist, three off the hips and none off her bust. Then what have you? Why, as to figure, she is another Marilyn Monroe. Mea surements of Marilyn are bust, 36i: waist, 23 and hips, 34. It is the significant difference in Marilyn's bust and waist mea surements that makes her such an outstanding "oomph girl." Two portable air-conditioning units, the world's largest of their kind, coo! the air in the club house when necessary. The first floor of the grandstand, too big an area to enclose in glass, can be heated by a forced-hot-air "curtain" that turns aside chill ing breezes in uncomfortably cool weather. To do the two jobs air condi tion the clubhouse and warm the grandstand Benjamin F. Lind heimer, executive director of Ar lington Park-Washington Park arranged for the following: Building of the two largest portable refrigeration units in the world. Each is mounted on trailers 32 feet long, 10 feet wide and 13 feet high, to be parked in a protective area to the rear of the stands. In full production, they generate enough cool air to air-condition 1,000 average-sized homes, and can lower the tem perature -from 95 degrees out side to 75-78 inside the club house. A specially built 30,000 gallon water tank provides a reserve of chilled water. Glass-enclosed Installation of a big boiler be hind the stands. It feeds hot water into underground pipes, which heat air that is then blown into the grandstand area by giant fans operating through giant-size ducts and vents. Construction of pipelines five miles of air conditioning pipe and six miles of heating pipe either sunk beneath the ground or slung in the interiors of the grandstand and club house. The Robert Hattis Engineering Company, and its consulting en gineer. Bud Hattis, met the chal lenge of the new problems posed by the vast amount of space to be treated. They enclosed the Washington Park clubhouse in terior, housing the mutuel areas, the concessions and the dining room, with 7,000 square feet of glass. It employs the "hot air cur tain" principle to "seal" cold air outside the grandstand. Giant blowers force a curtain of hot air straight down from overhead ducts, permitting only a mini mum of cold outside air to filter into the interior. Hattis said there "is no com parable installation in the world." The compressor refrigeration units and their attached trailers are expected to be moved to Ar lington Park, northwest of Chi cago, for the summer meeting there, then shifted back to Wash ington Park for the summer meeting beginning Aug. 14. Hindu Widow Allowed To Join Her Husband Calcutta, India (U.R) Sarala Devi, a young Hindu widow of the village of Parsa, threw her self on her husband's funeral pyre three times before she was allowed to die, it was reported her today. The third time villagers hon ored religious custom over man made, law and allowed the woman to join her husband in death according to the ancient Hindu custom of "suttee." Cattlemen Favor Federal Assistance Portland (U.R) The Oregon Cattlemen's association reports that the latest check on its mail vote on a resolution calling for some type of federal aid shows that 307 of the 556 members vot ing favor federal help. Vote casting closed Saturday on the resolution but Ed Coles, the organization's executive sec retary, said that results might change in case ballots post marked prior to June 10 are re ceived late. The mail vote of the member ship of the association resulted when a resolution calling for federal aid ended in a deadlock at the group's state convention last month. College Committee Asks Higher Salaries Portland (U.R) A commit tee representing Oregon's state colleges appeared before the State Board of Higher Education here yesterday to plead for high er faculty salary scales. The committee warned that unless Oregon raised its pay ments for academic services, it must resign itself to "substand ard" teaching personnel. The group pointed out resig nations during the past year and cited examples where instructors had gone to other institutions with a much higher pay scale. The committee urged that a 20 per cent average increase be placed in the biennial budget that will be presented to the 1957 session of the Legislature.
