TWO MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Women Outnumber Men As Corporation Shareholders By ELIZABETH TOOMEY Unitad Press Correspondent New York (U.PJ Women outnumber men as shareholders of publicly-held corporations lor the first time. Statisticians are totaling new record of just what happens to family savings handled by women; to stocks inherited by widows and to the investing pol icies of working girls. The census of shareowners is the project of the New York Stock Exchange. Still mcom plete, the census analysis al ready reveals the steady pro gress women have, made as in vestors in American business in past four year. Ratio Reversed Men barely outnumbered the women in a similar survey made four years ago by the Brookings institution. Then, 49.8 per cent of the shareowners were wom en. Now the estimate is 52 per cent It is canny savings, husbandly generosity or inheritance that accounts for the added thousands of female names on stock certif icates. According to the composite picture of the "average wom an investor, men get most of the credit for women's investment progress. "She is most frequently housewife." Keith Funston, pres ident of the New York Stock Exchange, explained in describ ing the typical woman investor. "She admits to having celebrat ed her 48th birthday. Her fam ily income averages S6000 a 1 'vear and she owns shares in bout four different companies. Usually men investors hold the larger blocks of stock, even though women actually out number them among the individ ual stockholders. Exerting Real Control Frank observers of investing habits also admit that many of the approximately four million women who own the stocks have little idea of what investments actually are in their names. ' "We're improving on that," a member of the Federation of Women Shareholders said. "A great many women who were left by their husbands didn't pay any attention to them unless the market started to go down. Then they would begin asking if they should sell or buy. Now we find more women exerting real control over the stocks they have." The federation also is working to bring down the average age of the average female stockhold er. The organization, a non-profit group which provides informa tion for women interested in in vestments, feels more young working girls should save their pennies to invest in American business. You use it while you read, rest, watch television . . even while you sleep! And it re duces inches . . . and does the job in a hurry. The new 1955 Relax-A-cizor is simple to use. You clip the belt (shown above) around your waist in 10 seconds. Turn a dial. Relax for 30 minutes. That's all Often dramatic results are seen te first week!
