The announced bid opening was for tower steel to be used in construction of two 115.000 volt transmission line river crossings from the Big Eddy sub station to serve the Harvey Ma chine company aluminum plant near The Dalles. Apparent low bid on the steel was S72.981. submitted by Beth lehem Pacific Coast steel, San Francisco. The contract awarded yester day went to the John L. Nichols construction company, Grand view, Wash., for construction of a four mile tap from Keeler sub station to the St. Johns-Oregon City line and a one mile St. Johns-Forest Grove loop line to Keeler substation. Fire Fighters Urge Competitive Scale Salem (U P) The Oregon State Fire Fighters association adopted a resolution urging a competitive wage scale on a lev el with other industries at the closing session of the association in Salem Tuesday. State benefits for firemen's occupational diseases were pro posals in another resolution that will be referred to the 1957 Legislature. Continuance of the annual miicular dystrophy campaign by the association was approved. The group elected Edward Whelan, Portland, as president; Richard House, Oregon City, as first vice president; Earl Nobel of Salem, second vice president; Fred O'SulIivan, Eugene, secretary-treasurer; and Doyle Ed wards of Klamath Falls, trustee. UHF Radio Telephone Circuit in Operation Ontario ;U.R) The second of the only two ultra high fre quency radio telephone circuits in the Northwest was put into service this week between On tario and Jordan Valley. Repairmen had to snowshoe in during the winter to maintain the old magneto circuit which this telephone circuit replaces. The new circuit, which covers about 100 miles, gives Jordan Valley direct service with the rest of the country. Leaders of the committee in terested in acquiring the large downtown hotel for Portland reported they felt that the con struction was nearer at the pres ent time than at any time in the past several years. Committee spokesmen said that the group planned to listen Injured Ensign Dies In Rescue Accident Anchorage, Alaska !U.R) Attempts to evacuate a seriously injured Navy ensign from a Na val supply ship anchored off Na knek, Alaska, ended in tragedy yesterday when an Air Force float plane crashed after taking off with the patient. Air Force officials at Elmen dorf Air Force Base here said the ensign died in the crash but they did not know whether death resulted from injuries received earlier aboard the USS White Marsh or from complications fol- to whatever proposal Hilton may have but are interested in who ever makes the best proposition. Man's Body Sighted At McNary Dam Umatilla. Ore. (U.R) A locks tender at McNary dam yesterday sighted the body of Frank Clevenger 67, who drown ed in the Columbia river in the Tri-City area last week. The coroner from Benton county. Wash., was called and recovered the body. lowing the crash. The pilot of the float plane. Capt. Clarence L. Harrington of the 5039th Air Transport Squad ron, and two crewmen escaped injury in the crash. The ensign was a crewman aboard the White Marsh which has been engaged in the annual "Mona Lisa" supply operation to far north ports. The ensign was not identified. Teacher Education Programs Approved Salem (U.R) Several pro grams in teacher education were approved here yesterday by the State Board of Education. The programs cover a five year period and include Maryl hurst, Lewis and Clark. Oregon State College. University of Ore gon, and Mt. Angel women's college. The teacher education pro gram at Portland State College is restricted to the school year 1955-56. Approved for the 1957 59 biennium were budgets for general education, vocational education and the Oregon Tech nical Institute in the Klamath Falls area.
