Truman To Give All-Out Effort To Elect Democratic Candidate Filitor"s Not: With the pressure In creasing among rontenders for the Democratic presidential nomination, the itewt ot former President Harry S Truman take on added significance. But the former president does not believe for one minute that the Democratic party is so short By EDWARD S. CORNISH United Press Correspondent Salzburg, Austria CUE Harry Truman, in fighting trim for the forthcoming political campaign, will go down the line for any candidate named by the Democratic convention. But a source close to the for mer President said today he be lieved no one not even Bess Truman knows If Mr. Truman has any personal preference for the lob of Democratic standard bearer. Mr. Truman has said he will attend the Democratic conven tion as "a private citizen and on looker." He has stated em phatically and repeatedly that he is not a candidate. Reporters who have been ac companying him on his trip about Europe believe that he is not being coy, that he means Just what he says. Yet they keep asking if he would submit to a draft a sub ject which Mr. Truman likes to call a "hypothetical question." He has avoided answering it di rectly. Might Accept Draft The feeling of those who know him, however, is that his answer might be a qualified yes. They believe he definitely does not wish to be nominated. If there was only himself and Mrs. Truman to think about, circumstances conceivably might rise which would demand his candidacy. But Mr.. Truman thinks them so unlikely that he is not even taking them into serious consideration. One very remote possibility would be a deadlock at the con vention which only Mr. Tru- Harriman as a candidate. But the ex-president does not con sider it in the best interests of his party to be identified with of strong and willing candidates any particular candidate at the that he might be the only man who could end a deadlock. His sole role at the conven tion, therefore, will not be that of a possible candidate. It will be instead that of a man anxious to help his party pick the best man for the job. Before the con vention, he will continue to keep a close watch on all the possible candidates without com mitting himself to any of hem. At the convention itself, he will try to preserve unity while doing his best to help se lect a man who can lead the Democrats to victory in Novem ber. A number of persons have claimed that Mr. Truman leans toward New York Gov. Averell Mother of Kidnaped Boy in Hospital Roseburg 'UP) Mrs. Evelyn Renhard, whose three-year-old son figured in a three-state kid-1 naping alarm last week, was in a Cottage Grove hospital today, the result of an auto accident that occurred north of Drain. . Mrs. Renhard's former hus band, Marcus H. Renhard, was free on $1000 bail on a charge of kidnaping the couple's son from a Eureka, Calif., day nur sery. The mother claims the son was awarded her in a divorce settlement at Grants Pass where the couple formerly lived. Renhard was taken into cus tody at Vancouver, Wash., Sat urday. Mrs. Renhard was en route to Portland after learning her son had been found when her car left the highway, skidded into a ditch and was demolished. present time. He probably won't announce a choice until the con vention actually is underway in Chicago. Will Support Candidate Once the delegates have gath ered, however, Mr. Truman's role as the Demcoratic party's only living ex-president and elder statesman may do much to enhance the convention's effec tiveness and harmony. When the candidate is chosen Mr. Truman will do everything in his power to insure his elec tion, even to the point of helping in a whistle-stop campaign if he thinks the party needs him for that task. Mr. Truman has no doubts that the Democrats can win this November against any Republi can candidate, including Presi dent Eisenhower. He also be lieves they will win if they get the issues across effectively to the people. He wants a hard hitting campaign by the Demo crats, with the party leaders missing no chance to bring their arguments directly to the voters. He believes there is plenty of ammunition for such a cam paign, including what he feels to be failures of the Eisenhower administration's farm policy. The 72-year-old Mr. Truman is in top physical form for a hard campaign himself. Even though he was hampered by a torn liga ment in his ankle, he kept re porters breathlessly puffing aft er him as he looked at the sights of Europe. In effect, private citizen Harry Truman believes the Republi cans are going to have a real fight on their hands and he believes that the same Mr. Tru man probably will be giving them some of their hardest knocks. ssssppv mm mi mittmftmwajmwrftmyrmt , m ussu m m ' U'' r e, f , ' SJfa.
