barrel," he said wtih obvious
satisfaction, "and a 48-inch
stock, and the overall length is
49 inches and a little more."
He even measured the trig
gerguard and the length of the
trigger.

noticed the picture except for
the reaction of a rather bulky
blonde.
"That stuff," she said, herding
an elderly man along, "went out
with antimacassars. That's why

The picture the unfortunate
fellow had been admiring was a
rather dusty thing about 18 by
24 Inches, excluding the heavy
frame. Nonetheless, there was a
feeling to it despite the dust and
gTime.
The scene was a small mead
ow running back into wooded
country. A sycamore, on the
bank of a brook in the fore
ground, stood out against the
dark forest at the meadow's
edge. A mist over the water
gave an air of incipient magic.
I blew soma more dust off the
canvas and looked for the ar
tist's name. It was almost inde
cipherable, but presently I spell
ed it out as Twachtman. It meant
nothing to me, but the picture

"I'm afraid we'll have to
charge you $3 for that, sir. You
see it'i one of the early maps
of the state and they're getting
kind of scarce."
Frank unfolded the map. It
was in color. "Boy! What enor
mous counties. Look at that
Sioux county," he exclaimed.
"And some of these counties
have disappeared. There isn't
any Black Bird county now, but
there's one here."
After studying the map for a
moment, he got out his ruler
and measured it. It was 26 '4 by
34 inches. As he fingered the

1853-1902, is one of the foremost
of American painters. He was a
native of Cincinnati and very
much of an individualist too
much of a one to follow slavish
ly the French impressionists, or
any others, very long.
For that reason, of course, he
is out of fashion today, out of
fashion with the long-hairs, with
those who are ever breathless
from attempting to stay in the
avant-garde. But that doesn't
matter for the simple reason
that much of his work is among
the most beautiful ever produc
ed from oil and canvas.
If you ever come across a pic
ture by Twachtman under simi
lar circumstances, buy it. Their
value range anywhere from
$200 or $300 to $2,000 or $3,000

ABOUT VALUE OF MAPS

legend.
. The map was dated 1879. The
draftsman was C. Roeser. J.
Bien, one of the most noted men
in the field of cartography of
his day, was the one who had
done the lithography.
"This linen's cracked on the
back," said Frank. "I don't sup
pose you have another one.
"As a matter of fact, we do,'
said the clerk. "Just a moment.'
He was back in a flash, but
the duplicate map he carried
was not much different. It, too
was in excellent condition ex
cept for some cracks on the
back. Frank looked at it thought
fully. "I'll take them both," he said,
handing the clerk $6.
When we got in the car a few
minutes later, Frank shook his
head.
"It's amazing." he said, "how
little people know about maps.
