(International) Paratroopers Kill Arab Guerrillas Tunis (U.R) French para troopers supported by strafing lighter planes wiped out a guer rilla band In southern Tunisia Tuesday, killing 71 Arabs and capturing 17, it was reported here today. Three French soldiers were killed and 15 wounded in the battle near Tatahouine, a mili tary post and caravan assembly point on the edge of the Sahara Desert. The French captured a light machine gun, five submachine guns and 54 rifles. Reports from Jhe scene said the guerrillas wore khaki uni forms, indicating the band was organized on at least a semi military basis. The battle at Tatahouine was the main engagement reported in terror-ridden French North Africa during a day that brought word of trouble in each of its other main divisions. Reliable sources in Algeria Mid guerrillas admitted by a traitorous native soldier sacked Ft. MacMahon, an outpost 90 miles southeast of Algiers. They killed 14 soldiers, 10 of them Frenchmen, and kidnapped 60 Arab sharpshooters. Forty-one of the shHnrfprt Arabs were released unharmed, but the other 19 apparently de serted to the guerrillas. US-Red China Talks In 49th Session Geneva (U.R) The United States and Red Chinese ambassa dors met for the 49th time with out result today. Today's session lasted two hours and 20 minutes. The next one will be held on June 8. The meetings started on Aug. 1 last year in an effort to work out differences between the two nations. -The United States has succeeded in winning freedom for a number of Americans held in Red China as a result of the talks, but 13 other Americans still are held in Communist jails although Peiping promised last September to release them "as expeditiously as possible." Afghanistan (U.R) Afghan Premier Sardar Moham med Daud has accepted an in vitation by Egyptian Premier Gamal Abdel Nasser to visit Egypt, it was disclosed today Harriman Backers Hold Conference New York (U.R) Local backers of Gov. Averell Harri man for the Democratic presi dential nomination held an "ac cidental" meeting with party leaders from Utah and Okla homa Wednesday. The pro-Harriman conference, which Harriman did not attend, was held at the Berkshire hotel. The governor, who calls himself an "inactive" candidate, was re covering from a prostate gland operation in Columbia-Presbyterian hospital. "It just happened there were some friends in town on their way to Washington," explained George Backer, New York Dem ocrat and realtor. Attending the meeting were James Arrington and Lloyd Benefield, Oklahoma Democratic national committeeman - elect, and state chairman, respectively, and Utah Democratic Chairman Milton Weilenmann. The meeting Backer describ ed as "accidental" was also at tended by Carmine G. De Sapio, Tammany Hall leader. New York State national committeeman, and New York Secretary of State. Harriman is believed to be the choice of most of Oklahoma's delegates, who will have 28 votes in the convention. Utah has ,12. Backer said the informal meeting "wasn't any great meet ing of political brains." Elks Dedicate New Eye Clinic Portland (U.R) Oregon Elks yesterday dedicated their new children's eye clinic in the new University of Oregon Medical School hospital here. Officials of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks de clared that the clinic on the 10th floor of the hospital was the best equipped eye facility for chil dren in the United States, "and probably in the world." Dedication address was by Edgr W. Smith, former chair man of the State Board of High er Education. Other speakers in- I eluded Martin P.
