(McMurray photo) A Nichol's Worth of ... Comment On By HARMAN W. NICHOLS United Pre Future Writ Washington (U.R) Most folks don't know what to fetch when they are starting on a long motor trip. Almost everybody over does it. Friend of mine sent his wife ahead to Barman Nichols pomi wnere " cost the old man 8 dollars for overweight on the luggage. She had everything in her gear but the bathtub and the piano. So a few days later, pop scrub bed his machine and made ready to pick up mom In St. Louis for a trip to California. He packed seven suits, 20 shirts, three doz en pairs of socks. set of tools, three bathrobes, a case of soap, blankets in case of having to sleep under stars. Not to men tion overshoes, three razors, raincoats and other things which are no earthly good on a long trip. Travel Light The American Automobile Association calls upon an old saying when it advises folks to "travel light.". It's pretty good advise. A couple of years ago I spent nearly a month in France and lugged along only one big bag. It was filled with washable ny- jon shirts only six under wear, and three suits, with some lightweight slacks which com plemented the jackets of the BEACH WITH r-csr1 fJ-ZJK St. Louis by llVr I PIa"e and she I aT.'4 I overdid the Li A 1 i parking to the ANY. When traveling in these United States one doesn't have to worry about cleaning or laun dry. You never are more than a few minutes away from a spot that will press a pair of pants or wash a shirt in a hurry. A lot of motels even advertise to do the job during the dark hours when sensible tourists are asleep. The AAA has a Iis of things- one ought to take on a trip. Maps, for sure. Travelers checks. A first aid kit, which takes up little hoom in the glove compartment. A light - weight travel iron. A flashlight. Cam era, if you are a flicker fan. Thermos jug. Sun glasses. "And other trinkets like toys if the kids are aboard. Wear Sensible Clothes .That, of course, in addition to sensible clothes like sports gear. If you want 'to see America these days you don't have to doll up very much. In most motels you don't need a tie, even, to bib up and have a fine steak dinner. "Clothes won't make your trip," is the way the AAA puts it in a booklet called "Travel Tips." In general, a woman needs to take a tailored suit, a change of blouses and accessories, plus a few hats and comfortable shoes. Maybe a couple of dresses for the cocktail or dinner hour. Of course, mere man can get away with very little, but he COMBER ANY GASOLINE PURCHASE FORD SEDAN No At The Family Editor' Note: The Family Council consists of a judge, a psychiatrist, s newspaper editor, a women's pace editor and two newspaper writers. Rita My parents are attempt ing to force me to marry a man for no other reason than that an intimacy occurred between us one evening when they left us home together. I do not want to marry this man, who means no more to me than a few others with whom I have been intimate. My parents have talked to this man and he has said that he is ready to marry me", but I feel I could not be happy with him. My parents are pressing the issue to the point where I will have to leave home whether or not I agree to marry him. They seem to be incapable of under standing how I can be unwilling to marry a man with whom I have been intimate. Mrs. R.T.S. I always thought we could trust our daughter, and we were terribly shocked to learn that this was not so. Rita brazenly tells us -that she does not love the man with whom she shared the most intimate rela tionship, and that he does not love her. As parents, my husband and I feel that since they chose to have intimacy without love, they should be able to choose marriage without love. We certainly do not want to see our daughter facing the world with her crude and cyni cal attitude, but what alternative do we have when she coldly tells us that she believes in free sex and intends to experiment with still other men until she finds the "right one." We would not insist on the marriage if our daughter showed the slightest indication of ratfret over what she had done, it her attitude is such that she would place us in the position of con doning her free love in the fu ture. The Council: Rita goes even beyond "free love.'' She has shown no decent respect for her parents and their home. She well knows what their standards of conduct are, yet she violated their standards in their home and proposes to do so in Jhe fu ture, as well. Rita no doubt thinks she and her circle are being very grown up and sensible, but she evident ly misses the ridiculous incon sistency of her lover's position. On the one hand, he would ap pear to defend extreme sex li cense; on the other hand he lacks the hardihood to refuse to marry the girl he has compromised. Actually, the situation is less ridiculous than it seems and more pathetic. However mucn he may sup press his . feelings with false ought to have at least one suit that would look all right in fancy places and it doesn't have to be formal. America is getting away from the formal business unless the invitation says "black tie" or "white tie" and most motels and hotels don't say anything about a tie at all. MS Jymie 2J Need to Boy to Try Save South Central at FOKTONI Council bravado, this man is on the de fensive because he knows he has done something wrong. That is why he is unable to refuse to marry the girL As for Rita, she is self-deluded to an even greater degree. If she thinks she will find "true love" with .her brazen experiments, she - will attain total bankruptcy. Her only hope and that is not a great hope lies in a firm attitude by her parents. It is tragic that they did not awaken to this problem much earlier, but their attitude, however belated, is certainly better than complacency or con donement. (COPYRIGHT 195S, GENERAL FEATURES CORP.)
