Sunday, May 27. 1958 Tornado Baseballers Rap Eugene in fi-1 Quarter-Final Fray TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Medford Faces The Dalles In Semi-Final On Monday At Fairgrounds Ball Park Strong and skillful pitching by Duane Sides, potent socking in the clutch by the middles of the batting order and spirited air-tight defense by the infield Friday boomed the - Medford "high school baseball team into the semi-final round of play-offs for the Oregon Class A-l cham- poinship. Medford's terrific Black Torn ado, upholding the school's 1955- 56 prestige in major sports, smashed across a brace of runs each in the fourth and sixth frames and. with senior tosser Sides recording a three-hitter, whipped the Eugene Axemen 4 to 1. The quarter-final skirmish was at Eugene. An eaeer-for-upset Tornado crew now goes against the state's No. 1-rated powerhouse. Mea ford will play The Dalles in state semi-finals at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the fairgrounds ball park here. The Indians, after trimming Grant of Portland in auarter-finals. will come here riding on the crest of a 20-game win skein without a loss this season. McLaughlin Hriples Catcher Dick McLaughlin and Third Baseman Jim Putney drove home runs for Medford in the fourth inning. McLaugh lin zoomed a triple into left field after Ed Reinking had singled. With two out Putney singled home the catcher. Reinking and McLaughlin al io did the scoring in the sixth stanza and were pushed home by First Baseman Larry Gober and Putney. Eddie led off the inning with a single. On a hit run play Gober cracked a triple through right field and Reink ing tallied. Gober was trapped off third base on McLaughlin's grounder. Dick reached first sack on the fielder's option. ' Sides skied out to center field. Then Putney crashed a liner triple along the left field stripe to bring in the final Medford run. Eugene scored its lone run in the final inning. Shortstop Rusty Diehl drew the only walk issued by Sides in the game? Pitch hitter Tom Jones was out on a super catch by Shortstop Gordon Owsley who had to go deep and make a last minute stab for the ball. Bill Muir, batting for Dave Powell, singled to center field and Diehl got to third base. Muir reached second on a muff by Reinking. Outfielder John Polhemus flied out to center field. Diehl raced home to score after the catch. . . Sides cut off the throw-in by Reinking and tagged out Muir for a double play ending the game. Mixes Pitch Expertly Eugene sluggers had hit the ball well during the season but were kept of balance as Sides expertly mixed his pitches in his top performance of the year on Friday. Sides struck out three batters and only five balls which the Axemen hit fair went out of the range of the Med ford infields. Ten putouts were on throws to first base.. Owsley and Sides each handled five fielding opportunities without a bobble and Putney three. Only two Axemen were left on base. Medfordites got seven hits off starting Eugene moundsman Ron Turner, who struckout three. Gary Ashwith, Turner's seventh inning reliver, issued the- only base on balls the Tornado re ceived. McLaughlin and Putney each slammed two hits in three turns at bat and Reinking tab ulated two for four. Th nitchinc triumph was Sides' fourth against two set backs for the season. Coach John Kovenz credited Tornado infield with great heads-up play during the after noon. Eugene entered the Friday frav ranked as fourth best prep club in Oregon. Losing pitcher Turner.' 3 No-Hitters In Friday's Prep Games By UNITED PRESS Five shutouts including three no-hit, no-run games featured ac tion Friday as Oregon high school baseball teams began showdown play for 1956 titles. ' Central Catholic, Lincoln, Medford and The Dalles ad vanced to the semi-finals in the A-l division. Seaside and Canby joined Crater of Central Point and Vale in the A-2 division while Glide and Gaston posted wins in class B. The titles will be decided next week in Portland. The no-hitters were hurled by Joe Martin of Central Catholic as the Rams blanked McMinn ville 4-0; Gary Holmes of Sea side as his team downed Newport 3-0, and by Bob Saunders of Gaston which took Corbett 3-0. Peterson Beats Grant - The other shutouts were pitch ed by ' Denny Peterson of The Dalles who two-hitted Grant of Portland for a 3-0 win and by Jack Beck of Canby, who also hurled a two-hitter as his team downed Central Union 5-0. In other games Medford took Eugene 4-1, Lincoln edged North Salem 2-1, and Glide took Maple ton 4-1. Vale beat Prineville yesterday 10-0. Pairings for . the semi-finals Monday , in A-l sends Central Catholic to . Lincoln and The Dalles to Medford; in class A-2 Canby will be at Seaside and Vale at Crater; Echo will be at Sisters and Glide at Gaston in class B. Ram Co-Owners Consider Selling Los Angeles (U.R) Dan Reeves, managing director of the Los Angeles Rams, said Sat urday his co-owners of the pro fessional football club had of fered to buy him out for $1 mil lion or sell out to him for $2 million. "It is not my intention to sell and never has been," he said. "And as far as buying goes, I don't have S2 million in cash." But he added he is "investi gating the possibility of form ing a syndicate to buy them out." The statement brought into the open the battle among the partners in the Rams. Opposing batters have been able to compile only a .144 mark against-five pitch ers of The Dalles. Catcher Irwin Fandrey has paced the hitters with a .434 rec ord and Denny Peterson, heads the ptichers with 10 victories, five of them shutouts. Both were state tourney all-star se lections' last year when The Dalles took' the Class A cham pionship. Woodworih Hits .381 Gary Woodwortb, outfielder, has a .381 average with his bat. Ed Davidson, shortstop, has hit .377 and Bill Roark, pitcher outfielder .363. Pat Foley, first baseman and an All-Blue Moun tain Conference choice last year, had a .356 standing for 19 games this year. Other top hitters include Doug Woolsey, outfielder,- .294, Bill Sallee, third baseman and all stater, .277, Peterson .275 and DaTrell Kaseburg, outfielder, .261. Foley has " driven in 23 runs this year and Fandrey 22., Through 10 games in -which Peterson had appeared in 55 13 innings up to the state quarter finals, he had struckout 109 bat ters and walked only 12. Peter son has permitted no earned runs. He has allowed only- 19 hits in 20 games. Roark, No. 2 pitcher with six victories and 41 23 innings of duty has fanned 46 batters and walked just 11. Two earned runs have been scored against Roark for an average of 0.33. Eight Rival Runs Earned The Dalles'? staff of five hurl ers, which includes Dave Wells, Bob Giannola and Bill Booth, has ' pitched 126 innings, has struck out 179, allowed 39 bases on balls, been tagged for 61 hits and had 21 runs scored against it, only eight of them earned. Earned run average for the staff is 0.47. ' Indians have scored 134 runs this season, 73 of them earned. Batters of the The Dalles, have gone to the plate 115 23 innings and have collected 85 bases on balls and 158 hits. They have been struck out 70 times. Last year the Indians beat Co lumbia Prep, Oregon City and Albany in the state tournament. Head coach Nagel is in his fourth season at The Dalles. He is a graduate of Eastern Wash ington college. Assistant coach is Joe Matthews, ex-University of Oregon. US Open Draws Record Numer New York (U.P) The 1956 National Open Golf tourna ment has drawn a record num ber of 1934 players, including defending champion Jack Fleck, Ben Hogan and five other for mer winners, the U. S. Golf as sociation announced. Sixteen of the entries are ex empt from sectional qualifying. The Vikings of Vale will be the favored team on Monday and will provide a stiff test for the Comets. Record of the eastern Oregonians is 15 victories against a single loss. They fell to Boise, Ida., by a one-run margin. However, Crater players now are showing moraT spirit than they have at any other time during the diamond season, Mell bye reported. Determination has been an important factor in bring the Comets to the semi finals. Fans have high hope here that they will "make it through on grit" and the pitching of Fred Herrmann again. Rain Halts Practice The Central Point club is un beaten by A-2 schools this year. It has given A-l schools some close contention. Rain cut short a light drill planned for Crater yesterday afternoon. The Comets got in some infield practice but the downpour cut out hitting drill. Mellbye reported that his squad appeared to be in fine shape physically. A few are nursing "strawberries" from the Junction City quarter-finals scrap. Harold Lefler likely will be catching the mound offerings of Herrmann Monday. Irifielders for Crater may be Neil Green, first base, Bill Reaves, second base,-. Wayne Allen, - shortstop, and Bob ' Fowler, sh&rtstop. Allen and Fowler are freshmen, Outfield probables are Allen Gosnell in left, Gary Smith in center and John Shama in right Earl Kline, Ashland, is sched uled to be one of the umpires for the Monday mix. He umped in Brooklyn Dodger spring training camp in 1955. Ramsey Fishing Group Schedules Ooeninq of Lake Ramsey Fish club will open its angling season on Thursday, June 1, at the 53-acre Sams Val ley Irrigation company reservoir off Ramsey canyon rd. in the Sams Valley district. H. S. Musson, manager of the lake, said that 100 memberships in the fish club are being sold for $25 each. In addition there will be charges of 30 cents -per seven to 10-inch trout and 35 cents for - trout more than 10 inches long. . The lake has been stocked with 6,000 trout 10 to 12 indies long, and 4.000 trout six to eight in ches in length. Six inch trout caught will cost 15 cents. Picnic and recreation grounds are open free to the public, Mus son stated. As yet, there are no overnight camping . facilities. Some boats for fishermen are available. The lake was built by ' six farmers of the area. Those as sociated with the irrigation com pany and the fishing club are Burle and Norman Burreson, Earl Peffley, Albert and Frank Straus and Wes McDonough. Porterhouse Upsets Swaps Inglewood, Calif. (U.R) Porterhouse ran 'own the fav ored Swaps, in the ' stretch Sat urday to score a nose victory in a major upset in .the $109,800 Californian at Hollywood Park before 58,500 dumfounded rac ing fans. The winning time was 1:40 45, just off the world's record set bjr Swaps in capturing the 1955 running of the mile and a sixteenth race. GAINED MOMENTUM Succeit of the Medford high baseballers has paralled that of the 1955-1956 Black Torn ado basketball team. There were no high expectations for the Tornado diamond squad when the season began. But the gang has Juit kept coining along and has gained moment um as the campaign progress ed. They've had a fine morale and have gained tremendous confidence. - Coach Johnny describes his crew as a group of boys who like to go out and play ball and don't care who it is they are meeting. He has indicated that the Tornado is not awed or unnerved by the record of The Dalles Indians but has been . looking forward to the possibility of meeting the state's defending champions So much so that it was feared at times the players weren't concentrating enough on the game at hand. , COMETS HUSTLE Coach Mellbye of Crater has credited his club's success to a large ' extent to intestinal fort itude (to say it in polite lang uage) and hustle. OUT TO BUST BARRIER Medford high school's stel lar half-mile trio, Bilbee Lane, the state and district champ, es Lingscheit and Wilcey Win Chell, will attempt to bust the two-minute barrier again ' when they run next Saturday in the Oregon AAU track, meet at Portland. The three with Lingscheit leading in were all under two minutes in the dual meet with Klamath Falls. Newland said that Mike Russell, northwest AAU. quarter-mile winner last year, will not make the trip to Portland next week end. The tutor pointed out that Russell Is tired after a hard year in which he did a tremendous job run ning as a sophomore. Russell is being "retired" for the season for his own health, Newland said. SIX CINDERMEN LOST ... There's six members of the the 1956 Tornado track squad who'll not be back for the the 1957 campaign.
