JACKSONVILLE
Post Office Move Scheduled

Jacksonville The Jackson
ville post office will move Into
the new building on Thursday,
May 31. The move will be made
after closing hours, and the of
fice will be open at the usual
time Friday, June 1, at the new
location next to Mom'i Hide
away on East California st.
The Senior at Jacksonville
High school have been bustling
with activity since May 1. 'Gay
Paree' was the theme for the
Prom held on May 4. The Com
munity hall was decorated like a
Paris street cafe. Miss Vicki
Tweedy was chosen queen and
George Perreard, king. Annette
Edwards and Sonja Smith were
princesses. Before the Prom ex
citement had ceased, skip day
arrived and 26 seniors and four
chaperones, the Mesdames Rudy
Broadbeck, Donald Wendt, Glen
Smith and Merle Tweedy, char
tered a bus and took a trip to
the coast, leaving here at 5:30
a.m. May 11 and returning home
at 9 p.m. the same day.
After taking the week end to
recuperate, the class began prep
arations for graduation. Bacca-
laureate services will be held
May 27 at 8 p.m. in the Presby
terian church, with the Rev.
Kenneth Corby officiating. Com
mencement exercises will be
held May 31 in the school gym
nasium a't 8 p.m. Dr. Roy Mc
Neil will be guest speaker.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
On May 25 the eighth grade
class at Jacksonville school had
a graduation party at an Ash
land skating rink. Lunch was
eaten later in the park. Chape
rones, who drove the pupils to
and from the party, were Mrs.
Wendell Matheny, Mrs. Pete
Zimmerman. Mrs. William P.
McNew, Mrs. E. O. Graham and
Mrs. Dietrich. D. L. Cox, eighth
grade teacher, also accompanied
the group.
Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Kassha
fer of Areata, Calif ., paid a sur
prise visit to Kasshafer's sister,
Mrs. Anna Rumley, last week
end.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Luy of
Medford and their son Paul Luy,
from Washington, visited the
Jacksonville cemetery last Sat
urday. The Luys formerly lived
bert.
Last week end visitors at the
Everett Ravenor home were Mr.
and Mrs. George Hollingsworth
of North Bend, Ore.
. Leroy Starky, former police
chief here, now in business in
Medford, was flown a month ago
to the Portland Veterans' hospi
tal and is now recuperating
there. Mrs. Starkey paid him a
visit there last week end. The
Starkys' daughter Pauline, well
Known in Jacksonville, will
graduate this May from Eagle
Foint High school.
Rebekah Ruth lodge No. 4 will
hold Friendship night June 4 at
8 p.m. in the Jacksonville IOOF
hall. All Rebekahs are invited.
The Jacksonville Rebekah
chib's May meeting was held at
the home of Mrs. Albert Hackert
last Tuesday. Potluck refresh-
ments were served and prepara
tions for friendship night were
discussed. Those attending were
the Mesdames Jack McDaniels,
Kindred Thomas, Everett Rave
nor, Peter Fick, E. E. Evans,
P. E. Matheny, Carl Hoskins and
Pearl Kitchen; the hostess, Mrs
Albert Hackett, and two guests,
Mrs. Milton James and Mrs. Mi
chael O'Shea. The June meeting
will be held at the IOOF hall,
and plans will be discussed for
the official visit of the Rebekah
president on July '11.
Two interments were held
last week in the Jacksonville
cemetery, for Mary Bell (Molly)
Ray, a resident of the Ruch
Applegate district for many
years, and James A. Wilson of
the Bishop creek area north of
Jacksonville. Here for the serv
ices and staying at the home of
Wilson's sister, Mrs. C. E. Linde
mood of Jacksonville, were his
daughter and husband, Mr. and
Mrs. John Jenner Jr. of Etna,
Calif.
A Girl Scout neighborhood
leaders meeting was held last
week at the home of Mrs. Pete
Zimmerman. Present were Mrs.
Albert Griffin, Mrs. Al Powlow-
ski, Mrs. H. Peterson, Mrs. W.
H. Dunlap.
Girl Scout leaders wish to
thank the mothers for their co
operation during the past year
and to express their enjoyment
in working with the girls. They
also wish to let it be known that
they will not be able to serve
the Girl Scout and Brownies
next year, and ask that mothers
of the respective troops volun
teer their leadership, or there
will be no Girl Scouting in Jack
sonville next year. Anyone in
terested may telephone Med
ford 3-3345. There will be Girl
Scout training for leaders next
fall. ,
Mrs. Pete Zimmerman's, Girl
Scout Troop 158, a group of 11
fifth grade girls, held a "back
yard camp-out' during last
weeks electrical storm and record-breaking
rainfall. The camp
ers took refuge in the Zimmer
man garage and were forced to
eat their "camp supper" around
the fire in the kitchen. But
breakfast next morning was;
eaten and cooked "buddy burn
er" style out of doors. The girls
were working toward camp
craft, outdoor cook and back
yard camper badges.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Godward
and two grandchildren, Gayle
and Curtiss Offenbacher, left
here last week for a two weeks
vacation sight seeing trip
throughout Canada.
Mrs. Grover Lovercheck and
Mrs. William Swape of Centra
lia. Wash., were last wek visi
tors at the Job Berrimen home.
They were all friends in Wyo
ming.
Residents of this community
have expressed sympathy for
Mrs. Marion Cunningham of
Medford, and other family mem
bers, at the unfimely death last
week of her daughter, Mrs. Phil
ip (Virginia) Hukill who was
born and raised in Jacksonville.
Mrs. Cunningham is the former
Marion Winningham, daughter
of Mrs. Stella Winningham of
Jacksonville.
Mrs. O. M. Kesler of the Jack
sonville Kindergarten announc
ed that mothers interested in en
tering their pre-school young
sters in the new fall term should
register them on June 1 by tele
phoning 9-8022 or calling at the
kindergarten at 801 Huener
lane.
The Woman's Missionary
Council of the Assembly of God
church held an all-day meeting
last week in preparation for Va
cation Bible school, which will
begin at the church on June 11
All children from 34 to 16
years are welcome to attend
each day from 9 to 11:45 a.m.
This is an annual service pro
vided by the church which in
the past has been thoroughly en
joyed by the children and appre
ciated by their parents.
At last week's Thursday eve
ning Jacksonville Lion's club
meeting new officers named for
1956-57 term were president

ond vice-president, John Kea-
veny; third vice-president, Merle
L. . Tweedy; secretary-treasurer,
Charles Young; tail twister,
Bruce Blew; Lion tamer, Joe
Cabler. Two new directors se
lected were Fred Edens and Carl
Totman.
Mrs. A. W. Henning returned
this week after a week's visit in
Salem as a delegate from the
Ashland Guild to the Lutheran
Women's Missionary league con
vention held there.

spending about 10 days in Cres
well with her son and wife, Mr.
and Mrs. Jim Collier, and tak
ing care of the new granddaugh
ter who arrived at the Collier
home recently. The baby, who
has been named Lois Josephine,
is the couple's third child and
third girl. Maternal grandpar
ents are Mr. and Mrs. Ellis War
ner of Oakland, Ore.
Mrs. Glenn Nelson, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Ranald Axtell
of Trail is ill at her home in Ash
land. Mr. and Mrs. Elston Baker,
former residents of this area,
were through the Shady Cove
Trail area last week on a busi
ness trip, and stopped off to call
on many old friends here. The
Bakers now live in Portland
where he is employed by Dant
and Russell.
Mr. and Mrs. William Mc
Dowell of Sebastapol, Calif., are
visiting with their daughter and
husband. Dr. and Mrs. Howard
Ferguson of Shady Cove.
Mr. and Mrs. Scottie Parrick
are spending ' a week at their
home at Trail before returning
to Lucerne, Calif., where Mr.
parrick will stay for awhile.
Scottie plans to. be on one of the
lookouts this summer.
Jim Cassal of Trail, who has
been .ill, was greatly improved
at last report.
Newcomers to Shady Cove are
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bower of
Phoenix who have lived in the
area for about 15 "years. The
Bowers are employed as care
takers for the Ernest Segessen-mans.
Following the Monday night
instruction classes that have
been held at the homes of Mrs.
Ernest Segessenman and Mrs.
Dick Bartuss of Shady Cove, a
number of those who have at
tended will be confirmed at the
regular confirmation exercises
to be held in Medford soon. Any
high school students who wish
to receive instruction for con
firmation may do so at the Mon
day night classes. Starting June
4 the Holy Name Sisters of St.
Mary's academy in Medford will
have a two week course of re
ligious instruction for Catholic
children of the area. The classes
will continue through June 15.
Our Lady of Fatima club will
meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday,
June 7, at the home of Mrs.
Carroll Watson of Shady Cove.
There is considerable building
and remodeling of nouses now
under way in the Shady Cove
area. Mr. and Mrs. Al Cooper of
Shady Cove are building a pum
mice brick addition to their
house, with Dick Johnson and
his son-in-law, Von Williams of
Shady Cove, doing the work.
Jerry Smart of the Rainbow
motel is building a brick build
ing which will be a four unit
motel. Johnnie Minor, is remodel
ing and building onto his house
and has two bedrooms ready for
occupancy. Howard Ash has
been building a house next to
the Clayton Knotts' for Carl
Hanson, brother of Oscar Han
son of Trail. . '
Dinner guests at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Watson of
Shady Cove on Wednesday eve
ning were Mr. and Mrs. Bob
Ivey of San Jose, Calif. Mrs. Car
roll Watson and children made
a trip with friends, Mr. and Mrs.
Vic Helgesson of Salem, on Sun
day to the Butte Falls fish hatch
ery.
Mr. and Mrs. Johnie Minor
and family of Shady Cove made
a trip to Coos Bay and 10 Mile
lake last week end, where they
enjoyed iishmg and the children
had a good time hunting for
shells on the beach.
Mrs. William Shepherd and
Mrs. Floyd Kelley of Shady Cove
attended the meeting of the
Prospect Garden club held at
the home of Mrs. Everett Shafer
last week. Mrs. Shepherd gave
the lesson on flower arrange
ments.
The Tuesday morning social
club met at the home of Mrs.
Earl Warren on May 22. Canasta
was played by those present,
Mesdames Buster Akins, Ted Os
borne, Ralph Osborne, Johnnie
Minor, and Earl Warren of
Shady Cove, Ernest Martin of
Trail and Mrs. Maggie Akins of
Medford. Next meeting will be
on Tuesday, May 29 at the home
of Mrs. Buster Akins of Shady
Cove. i
The Floyd Kelleys of Shady
Cove entertained a number of
visitors over the past weekend,
including Mr. and Mrs. Elmer
Clemens of Grants Pass, who
visited on Friday, Mrs. Violet
Ditsworth of Portland, who
spent the week end with the
Kelleys; Mrs. Roy Vaughn of
Laurelhurst rd., Trail, who was
a luncheon guest on. Saturday;
and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Arent
and son, Michael of Medford who
spent Sunday with the Kelleys.
Elton R. Minor, who is home
on furlough from the Army in
San Francisco, is spending his
leave with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Dennis Minor of Shady
Cove. Also visiting with tfie
Dennis Minors and their son and
family, Johnnie Minor of Shady
Cove, have been Mrs. Minor's
sister and neice, Mrs. Emma
Mayes and. daughter, Helen of
Miller, Okla., and her two sons,
Jim Minor of Medford and Red
Minor of Lakeview, Ore.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Long of
Longs' Valley supply have sold
their store to Mr. and Mrs. W.
A. Ducker of San Pedro, Calif.,
with the Duckers taking over
the store May 18. Ducker was
formerly a salesman for Lincoln
Mercury in Torrance, Calif., and
Mrs. Ducker was office manager
for the concern. Ducker also
traveled throughout the state of
Oregon as a salesman for an in
dustrial chemical company. Tom
Burdett of Shady Cove is doing
some building for the Duckers,
adding on another bedroom to
be occupied by Mrs. Ducker's
mother when she arrives.
Arabian Horse Show
Slated at Salem
Salem Oregon's 10th annual
All-Arabian Horse show will be
held in Salem at the state fair
grounds June 23-24.
The Oregon show is sponsored
jointly by the Arabian Horse
Breeders association of Oregon
and the Salem Shrine club. Pro
ceeds from gate receipts at the
two-day event go to the Shriners'
Crippled Children's hospital in
Portland.

has received a certificate of mem
bership to the "Sons and Daugh
ters of the Soddies." To be eligi
ble one must have lived in a
sod house or gone to a sod-con
structed school. The headquar
ters for the Soddies is Colby,
Kan.
Mr. and Mrs. Romulo Corona
have purchased the Stanley Rob
bins home on Fifth ave. They
were formerly living in Mrs.
Ruth Harney's home, which is
on the river.
The Ameythist Rebekah lodge
is headquarters for the Red Cross
drive, with Mrs. Clarence Pars
ley acting chairman. They will
meet at Mrs. Paul Molloy's at
9 a.m. Monday, May 28. They
intend to make a door-to-door
canvas. The meeting will be in
the form of a covered dish lunch
eon. Anyone who would like to
help is more than welcome, Mrs.
Norman Gail, Mrs. Lester Park
er, Mrs. Cecil Johnson and Mrs.
Paul Thompson are the main
working team.
Mrs. James Eldred and Mrs.
Ed Tulare and children made a
short visit to Canyonville where
Mrs. Eldred attended the Can
yonville clinic.
Mrs. Don Morrow left Satur
day for Oxnard, Calif., where
she was called by the death of
her father, Norman Hames. Mr.
Hames passed away Friday.
Mrs. Morrow will go with other
members of family to Paris,
Ark., where Mr. Hames is to be
buried.
Mrs. Dale Collins gave a coffee
to her precinct workers of the
Republican party at noon May
24.
Mrs. Charles Arnold of Long
Beach, Calif., is here to spend
a few weeks with her daughter,
Mrs. Paul Throne, and family.
Mrs. Mary Shaw and Mrs.
Elinor Ganong left this last
week for a short stay in Port
land. Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Newland
and their daughter, Jan, attend
ed the Oregon state track meet
in Corvallis last week.
The Senior Young Peoples so
ciety of the Methodist church
attended the Ashland sub-district
rally held last Sunday. The
election of officers for the new
year was held. Pat Bickel was
named Christian witness; and
Grace Gail, Christian onward.
Mrs. Lawrence Smith attended
the meeting with her class. Mrs.
Norman Gail and Donnie took
the group over.
Next Sunday the Methodist
church will hold a coffee for
parents Monday, May 28, at the
Paul Molloy home. This is the
primary class's project. Proceeds
wCl be used for the benefit of
the parsonage.

Jr., and daughters, Karen and
Sharon, spent the week end with
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rob
ert Bowen Sr. They brought
back Mrs. Alma Bowen, who is
also from Richmond, Calif., and
