Medford Tribune Second Section MEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, MAY 25, 1956 Pages 1 to 8 Un-American Group Will Probe Issuance Of Delegate Passports Washington U.R) The House Un-American Activities Committee has directed its passport investigation at U. S. delegates to so-called interna tional peace conference. T h committee summoned three witnesses, two of them al leged Communists, to testify how they obtained passports to attend such conferences in 1952. The committee identified the witnesses is: Louis Wheato of New York, chairman of the U. S. delegation to the Asiatic-Pacific Peace Conference in Peiping; Mary Russak of New York, chairman of the U. S. delegation to the Interncontinental Peace Conference at Montivideo, Uru guay, and Dr. John A. Kingsbury of New York, chairman of the National Council of American Soviet Friendship. The commit tee said Kingsbury also attend ed the Peiping conference. William Wallace of Mt. Ver non, N. Y., former Communist and FBI 'undercover agent, told the committee Wednesday that Wheaten and Miss Russak were Communists. He also told the committee he obtained a passport to Moscow while still a Communist in 1951 by telling the State Department he was going to France and Eng land. The State Department has for bidden the issuance of passports to Red China. It also has discre tionary authority to deny pass ports requested by Communists. Dr. Willard Uphaus, New Haven, Conn., told the commit tee it is "ancient history" that the right to travel freely from country to country transcends the laws of individual countries. Uphaus is executive director of World Fellowship, Inc., and has a doctor's degree in religious education from Yale University. He was professor of religious education at Vanderbilt Univer sity, Nashville, Tenn., from 1925 to 1928. FIRESIDE CHATS Washington (U.R President Eisenhowefr disclosed Wednes day he has "often" considered reviving the system of "fireside chats" to explain complex gov ernment problems to the people. He told his news conference that so far he "just doesn't know" whether they would be helpful. He noted that he already ap pears nearly once a week before reporters to answer their ques tions and to discuss government can evangelist Billy Graham, and three nurses are keeping watch over the children, who are quarantined in a four-room suite in a downtown hotel. Plane Wreck Found; Passengers Missing Hilo, Hawaii flJ.PJ The wreckage of a missing private airplane was found on the slope of Hawaiia's famed Mauna Loa Volcano Wednesday and reports indicnted its two occupants were attempting to walk to civiliza tion. The flyers, both Air Force enlisted men, were Airman Ellis L. Stuart Jr., 19, Springfield, Mo., and Airman Donald Draam, 20, St. Peter, Minn. They vanished Wednesday on a 180-mile flight from Honolulu to Hilo, capital of the island of Hawaii. A helicopter pilot reported finding their broken single-en-gined Aer-coupe at the 7200-foot level of the volcano cone, but said a close inspection revealed no sign of the men. A land search party was work ing up the rugged slope after a forest ranger reported seeing what was believed to be a signal fire several miles below the crash scene.
