MONEY RETURNED Wheeling, W. Va. (U.R) Wheeling Downs cashier Paul Cooper was thankful today that Ted Pappas, who lives here, was satisfied with cashing in three tickets on Thursday's $620.40 daily double at Wheeling Downs race track. Pappas noticed that Cooper had overpaid him by $1,000, so he pocketed his right ful $1,861.20 and returned the "extra" money to a thankful Cooper. Sought Bartender In Death of Woman Carson City, Nev. (U.R) A search was under way today for a Los Angeles bartender after the strangled body of a well-to-do 23-year-old Philadelphia di vorcee was found stuffed in a locked closet in his apartment. Inspector Irwin Butner of the Carson City police department said the murder victim had been identified tentatively as Mrs. Ann Harris Van Ryne, formerly of Philadelphia. She was be lieved to be the daughter of J. Andrew Harris III of Philadel phia, Butner said. An all-points bulletin was issued for the arrest of William Boswell, 35-year-old bartender who resided in the apartment in which the attractive blonde's body was discovered By KURT FREUDENTHAL Indianapolis, Ind. (U.R) Ob servers speculated today that even the slowest of the 29 cars already qualified for the 500- mile Indianapolis Motor Speed way race have a good chance to make the 33-car starting field They based their opinions on this week's practice sessions dur ing which few laps exceeding 140 miles per hour were turned in by the two dozen or so cars shooting for the remaining four positions Barring adverse weather, the Industry Discussed At Rotary Meeting Americans have become so ac customed to industrial miracles that they are in danger of for getting what makes them pos sible, Harlin L. P. Wendell, Pa cific district manager of the Du Pont company's extension division, said at a meeting of the Medford Rotary club this week at the Jackson hotel. "The danger today," Wendell said, "is that, in taking for granted the progress we have made, we may lose touch with the sources of our national strength and prosperity." He said "if ever we, as a na tion, come to believe that our position in the world today is simply an accident if time, cli mate and national resources, the decline of America will be well advanced." "The danger Is that we shall forget that progress must be continuously created, and will forget the means by which Amer ica does continuously create It," he said. Wendell pointed out that to maintain and improve the stand ard of living of a rapidly grow ing population requires that the productive capacity of the Indi vidual be increased. Battleship Oregon Remains Moved Again Portland (U.R) The last re mains of the venerable Battle ship Oregon were on the move again today. The mast and bow plate of the heroic vessel were being moved from a small park on Harbor drive and Front street. The move was necessary to make room for new grade sepa rations and cloverleafs on Harbor drive. vanished several days ago and was believed to have fled in one of the slain woman's three auto- Boswell mobiles, Butner said. tentative starting lineup will be completed Saturday. The "bump ing" begins, with cars averag ing the slowest speeds for the 10-mile test facing elimination by faster qualifiers. The time trials end Sunday. Pat Flaherty of Chicago was last week end's fastest qualifier, averaging 145,056 mph and 145.596 mph for one and four laps respectively to set new course records and win the pole position. The average for the 29 quali fiers of 142.896 is more than last year's field. Garrett Low Man Low man now is rookie Bill Garrett, who qualified Sunday at a clip of 140.559. Next In line is Ray Crawford at 140.884, fol lowed by Jimmy Daywalt's 140.977. But railbirds figured their cars will withstand the assault because there simply are not enough speedy driver-car com binations left to oust them. At most, they said, four or six cars will be able to get up enough steam to average 140 mph or so around the brick-yard. Those cars included the second Novi, scheduled to be driven by Eddie Russop and a convention al 4-cylinder creation with Johnny Tolan at the wheel. The majority of the pilots who qualified last week end can relax until race day. Still, officials expected plenty of car-hopping in last-minute ef forts to crash the linenp and fans will need a racing "who's who" to keep abreast of track de velopments. - , 'Devoted' Mother Kills 3 Children Lake Wales, Fla (U.R) A young mother, described as "very devoted" to her three children, shot them to death and tucked their bodies neatly in bed be fore calling a doctor, police re ported today.. The mother, Mrs. Lorene Cal- beck, then shot herself. Officers, notified by the doctor, rushed to Mrs. Caibeck's trailer home and found the mother in critical con dition with a pistol bullet In her chest. Police could find no motive immediately for the woman's actions. In tracing the triple slaying, officers theorized that Mrs. Cal- beck, whose husband was re ported to be living in Sault St. Marie, Mich., took each of her three blonde daughters out for a ride in the car separately, un dressed them, shot them, re turned and put their bodies in I bed as if they were asleep. " Instead of being lowered gent ly by his white and orange para chute to the bottom of the mesa, "Sam," an instrument filled dummy who had just ridden a rocket sled at more than 600 miles an hour, went over the cliff with his legs and arms flailing wildly. "He must have got busted ud bad," moaned George Smith, North American aviation test pilot who in February of 1955 became the only man to survive an actual supersonic bailout. Officials of Coleman En gineering Co., operators of the test track for the air research and development center, said the rockets propelling the sled down the slender steel rails had per formed perfectly. Why didn't you feel the water before you put your hand in it!" Electricity Out of Water All right, you answer this question: During a guided tour to one of the west's great dams, the guide had just explained that the water released from the hydroelectric generating plant was distributed for irrigation. A woman in the party asked: "But is the water any good for irrigat ing after all the electricity has been taken out of it?" Here is a serious case of water on the knee from a Minnesota paper! "She recently broke her leg between the levee and the ankle." The standard evening's prac tice for one ranger naturalist at Old Faithful Geyser in Yel lowstone Nation Park was to lift some small boy or girl close to the light switch, and let him press the button to turn on flood lights before Old Faithful let go. As usual, this evening the ranger lifted a little boy and let him press the button. Just as the light flashed on, Old Faithful shot a mighty col umn of boiling water and steam high into the air. The small boy turned and shouted: "Look, Mama, I turned on Old Faithful with one hand!" For submitting the best boner, my judges are awarding D. W.
