TWO MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday, May 24, I95S U.S., Canada Agree To Launch Study of Use of Border Water Washington U. The State Department haj announced that the United States and Canada have agreed to launch a study regarding the use of water flow ing across the international boundary. The study will deal with such problems as Canada's suggestion that it divert surplus water now flowing from Canada into the Columbia river basin in this country. The inquiry, first suggested at the recent meeting between President Eisenhower and Ca nadian Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent, could lead to a revision of the 1909 treaty which now governs international water use. The State Department an nounced plans for the study while former Idaho Gov. Len B. Jordan, chief American repre sentative in the International Joint Commission, was testifying before a Senate subcommittee on negotiations involving the Co lumbia. Sen. Richard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.), subcommittee chair man, said the U. S.-Canadian study was in line with a recom mendation he made to take the problem away from Jordan and the joint commission. Neuberger has accused Jor dan of dragging his feet on ne gotiations for Libby dam in Mon tana. The State Department an nouncment mentioned three streams as being involved in the discussions the Columbia, the Yukon and the St. Johns. It said there are "complicated legal, economic and engineering prob lems involved in the interna tional development of the streams, and pointed out there have been no diplomatic discus sions on them since 1909. The resort can be reached through Dead Indian rd., re ported to be in the best condi tion ever, and the Klamath Falls route. The section of road on the Dead Indian route in Jackson county is in excellent shape be cause of work done by the coun ty road crews both last fall and this spring, according to Neeley. The remainder of the road in Klamath county, though not so good, is in fine condition, the resort owner explained. Fishing Season Fishing season will open July 1 and the lake now is being stocked with 50,000 legal length rainbow trout and 300,000 fing erlings. The resort coffee shop and store are stocked and furnished cabins are available. Picnic grounds are also available and row and outboard motor boats are for rent. - Exceptionally warm weather recently has melted snows at the lake and swimming has been good, Neeley said. Private roads to summer homes also are open, Fish lake roads are open from Deadwood junction on the Dead Indian highway and also from Butte Falls junction. The road on into Lake of the Woods from the Butte Falls route still is closed due to drifts of snow re ported to be three to four feet high, Neeley said. Lawrence will work with a committee to arrange sponsors and help select boys to attend the Youth Range camp August 6-11 on the bird range south of Burns. Four boys between 14 and 18 years of age will be chosen from Jackson county, Lawrence said. They will be selected through plant identification contest, on the basis of leadership, good citizenship and love of the out doors. Local organizations and in dividuals will be solicited by the county committe to provide $25 scholarships to cover transporta tion and camp costs for boys attending the camp. The Spaniards' manners, no matter what else or age, are extremely gracious. A woman will always rise when receiving an introduction to another wom an. I have always done this just for an older woman but here, and in Italy, it is the custom to rise for all ages except the young unmarried. Good Lesson Well do I remember when my daughter, Michelle, aged 15, complained that she felt silly be cause she was the only girl in her group that rose when an older woman entered the room. I emphatically impressed on her that she would have to continue to feel silly or I would disown her, that there was nothing wrong in paying this gesture of respect. The removing of the right glove for an introduction in Italy and Spain I don't under stand. A man removing his glove makes sense because it no doubt is a hangover from the days when men wore gauntlets which were possibly soiled from the horses's reins. There are so many contradic tions about wearing gloves. When meeting the pope you are not allowed to have one on your right hand. Yet for English royal ty it is a "must." Big Tease What fun Noel Coward had teasing me about the length of my white kid gloves just before I was to be presented to Alfonso, king of Spain. He teased me that they were one inch too short. I think a gracious introduction . is so much nicer than our usual catch-as-catch-can mumbo jum bo. But, hurrah for our side when it comes to the good man ners of being punctual. And shame on the Italians and Span iards for thinking nothing about being an hour late.
