In the back row, left to Bedford Baseball Crew Goes To Eugene Friday Afternoon For State A-1 Quarter-Final Oregon state quarter-final baseball play in A-1 division matching Medford high and Eu gene will be at the Willamette high school field at Eugene on Friday. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. Eugene smothered Cottage Grove 18 to 1 on Monday to take the District 5 banner. Med ford is the champion in District e. Coach Duane Mellem's Eu gene Axemen have a record for the season of 11 victories and two defeats. That mark com pares to the varsity mark of 11 wins, four setbacks and one tie for the Tornado playing under the tutelage of John Kovenz. Rainy weather earlier this sea son prevented a chance for a comparison between the Axemen and the Tornado. Medford went to Eugene for a twinbill. . The Eugene club was told after a rainy Friday that the Saturday tussles were out. It appeared Saturday that the games could be played but the Axemen could not be rounded up. . XUR) The Pa cific Coast conference issued a mandate to all member schools today to divorce themselves from off-campus athletic booster clubs unless the schools are giv en a free hand in running them. Conference officials ruled that no school is to "maintain any relationship with any off -campus, organization established to fa cilitate recruiting or otherwise assist the athletic program un less: ' ' "A. That organization has on file with the institution a copy of its constitution and bylaws; the statement of its objectives, policies and. operational proce dures and a list of its current officers. .. ,- ' "B. The organization agreed in writing to permit the institu tion and conference commission to examine upon demand its books and records, including names of all members and con tributors as well as the amount contributed by each. "C. The organization submits to the institution its books and records at least once every 12 months." .' i The new regulation is effec tive Aug. 15, 1956V Grade Baseball Tilts Thursday; Jackson Champ Season- ending extra games are slated by Medford grade school baseball teams Thursday. Title in the loop is not at stake. Jackson clinched the champ ionship with a four-win no-loss record in regular season action. Its game with Roosevelt tomor row would have counted only if a tie was i to be resolved. Roose velt finished the regular slate with a 3-1 standing for second place. Third spot will be at stake, however, in the Washington-Jefferson tussle. The two clubs have 1-2 standings and were weather ed out of their previously sched uled 'game. Thursday's play will be a make-up Lincoln, which didn't dent the win column in loop play, has a tussle with St. Mary's tomor row. St. Mary's played a round of tangles with the city ..schools but was not in the running for the title. Jackson defeated St. Mary's in a game yesterday. ' Art Wilson Sold Back To Seattle Portland (U.R) Artie Wil son, a utility infielder with the. Portland Beavers since his pur chase from Seattle last year, has been sold back to the Rainiers. The sale of Wilson, a .301 hit ter for the Beavers last year, left Portland only one over the 21-player limit. Daily's U-Drive Medford Airport Coast Loop Returned Closer To Amateurism Br BILL McFARLAND Victoria, B.C. U.R) The Pa cific Coast Conference winds up an historic meeting today on a note it has, by force, returned the game of football closer to amateurism in the PCC. . Only minor matters were left on the agenda. In the past five days the con ference has: 1. Crushed high and mighty UCLA's athletic program for three years because it was taint ed by unauthorized payments of financial aid to athletes. 2. Put a clamp on athletic "tramps" by making it impos sible for an athlete at one mem ber school to transfer to another just for the sake of sports com petition. All eligibility for ath letic competition is lost by the transfer athlete unless he proves the reason for the transfer was for academic betterment. 3. Put the onus on off-campus booster clubs, unless the affili ated university or college has control over such clubs that help recruit of athletes or provide fi nancial aid to them. Minor Action Other actions were taken but were minor by comparison. One of the conference's most powerful, officials said of the meeting: "The steps we have taken are in the right direction. Other PCC Schools Pay Higher Say UCLA Players Los Angeles U.R) The Uni versity of California at Los An geles faces a dismal outlook for the 1956 football season as a re sult of a Pacific Coast confer ence ruling penalizing every member of the squad a year's eligibility. The PCC's action came Mon day, less than three days after it put the school on a three-year probation. UCLA stands to lose 11 of 17'lettermen due'back next fall .unless they can prove they haven't received illegal finan cial aid. The latest action drew sharp criticism from both players and alumni at UCLA. v , Hardiman Cureton, UCLA's senior All-American, accused the University of Southern Cali fornia of paying the highest prices to get athletes on . the coast. A number of Coast Conference coaches voiced opinions that the Coast Conference is moving to wards making the PCC a "sec ond Ivy League" which has dras tically de-emphasized big time sports, particularly football. The conference, it was re vealed, may not be at the end of the line in its quest of erasing evils in athletics at member schools. Conference spokesman,. Dr. Glen Seaborg of the University of California, and Commissioner Victor O. Schmidt said they would pursue all reoorts of ath letic misconduct with relation to the conference code, including anything an athlete, a coach or even parents of players and oth ers may wish to reveal. (U.R) All Paci fic Coast conference schools ex cept Washington State college were assessed fines ranging from $250 to $1,550 for "minor" violations of the conference ath letic code. California drew the biggest fine, $1,550, for improper issue of complimentary athletic tick ets; irregularities in the campus labor program for student ath letes, and conduction of off campus interviews with a pros pective athlete. Idaho was fined $1,000 for ir regularities in its campus labor program for student athletes. Interview Costs Oregon State drew a $650 pen alty for an off-campus interview with a prospective athlete; com petition for an ineligible athlete and entertainment of an ath letic prospect. A $500 fine was placed against Southern California for conduct ing an off-campus interview with an athlete and allowing competition of two students while ineligible.
