(U.F9 Tfe confessed slayer of two small brothers told newsmen Wednes day night how he turned hi machine gun on fellow GIs dur ing a tierce World War n battle. The bizarre story told by Dal las Withers, 33,. is backed up by lie detector tests, Sheriff M. X Daffin said. . j Details Spilled Out Withers, confined to a secret out-of-town jail because of high feeling over the deaths of David and Douglas Wilson, spilled out details of. .how he machine gunned American troops in Ger many early in 1945. "I've got nothing to lose," hm told newsmen. "I want to dear my conscience." . . Daffin said lie detector testa appeared to verify Withers con fession of drowning David, 7, and Douglas, 4, by tossing them from his boat last May.l, and also his account of the battle front episode. However, chief investigator Floyd D. Nixon said that while he believed the drowning story because of supporting evidence, he considered the story of the machine gun incident "a lie."- "I don't know how many I killed," .Withers told reporters visiting his celL "I don't know why I did it." Supporting Riflemen He said that while a member of Company D, 304th Infantry Regiment, 76th Infantry Divi sion, he was supporting a squad of riflemen deployed 300 yards ahead of him during a night bombardment. He said he de liberately lowered the sights of his gun and opened fire. , Casualties - from ' the enemy bombardment were to great that if his shots by chance -hit any of the Americans the U.S. au thorities never realized it,-With ers said; - ' Video Reception Mystery Cleared Wildwood -by - the Sea, N.J.
