William A. Callahan, chair man of the State Industrial Acci dent Commission, said the Rose burg conference was the only one scheduled for this spring. More Discussion on Variants of Epilepsy I am terribly sorry to have to hurt the feelings of persons who have eDilepsy in their family, but I see no sense in hiding facts about any disease. learned these facts about e p i 1 e p sy by talking long with hundreds 0 f epileptics who told me waiiri Alvarez What nap- pened to some of their relatives, I feel strongly that these facts must be published if only so that we physicians can learn to diagnose quickly what is wrong with some of the highly nervous, jittery and unhappy people who consult us. First, we must learn to suspect that an irritable and irascible person may be either a carrier of epilepsy or suffering from a rare variant of the dis ease. Unfortunately, as yet, stu dents in medical schools have not been shown many examples of this atypical disease and hence, when they get out in prac tice, they do not suspect what is wrong with patients of this type. To illustrate: A month ago in came an able physician of 50, who said he was about at the end of his nervous rope. For all his life he had clung to his sanity; he had had a hard time restrain ing his temper, and often he had had to struggle to keep from striking people. He had always had terrifying nightmares, he had been too irritable ever to love a woman or spiritually to come close to one; he had had short spells of depression in which he had to fight hard not to commit suicide, and he had had many panics of unreasoning fear. He had had spells in which he would not talk but would move about aimlessly, smack ing his lips, and rubbing his left eye with the back of his hand. Few Convulsions Recognizing the symptoms of a psychic epilepsy, I asked and found that in his childhood and even later, he had had a few convulsions. I found that his fa ther was a violent-tempered, mildly psychotic sort of man who at times had roamed away and deserted his family. My pa tient had several sisters, one of whom was mentally retarded, and another who had always been too silent and reserved and crabbed ever to have a beau. When I gave the doctor dilan- Postal Rate Hike Gets Tentative OK Washington (U.R) . . The House Post Office Committee has voted tentatively to increase postal rates for newspapers and magazines. The increases would be spread over five years. The Committee, meeting In closed session, also voted the 30 per cent increase for third class mail as recommended by the Post Office Department. The Committee wag to con sider today administration re commendations to increase first class letters from three to four cents and air mail from six to seven cents. After that, the Com mittee will vote on the entire bill again. it would increase rate on reading material in newspapers and magazines from the present 1.95 cents a pound to 2.5 cents a pound over the five-year period. It would increase the rates on advertising material in the pub lications from the present 1.95 cents a pound to 4.3 cents, with the 4.3-cent rate applying to the farthest zones.
