I TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday, May 17, 1956 MEDFORD BASEBALLERS SPILL GRANTS PASS AGAIN 4 TO 2; LOOP PENNANT WITHIN GRASP Medlord high's surprising baseball crew, which swung into stride after a slow start and has whirled strong ,when the weath er permitted, ; was one game away today from its first South ern Oregon conference cham pionship in three seasons. Larry Cochel, Grants Pass sophomore chucker, limited the Black Tornad to just four hits in a loop engagement here yes terday afternoon but the Med fordites were able to put every one of the bingles to use and concoct a 4 to 2 triumph over the Cavemen. The Tornado fortified its loop leadership with the victory and needs only to take one of its two games Saturday at Klamath Falls to tuck away both the con ference and District 6 A-l ban ners. One Medford hit was combin ed with a walk and an error for one run and the three other Tor nado raps figured in a three-run outburst which put the home club out in front for keeps in the battle. Duane Sides threw a seven-hitter against the Cavemen. Shoulder Deadened The Medford righthander, pitching with a shot of nova- caine in his left shoulder to deaden a senior skip-day injury had only one real rough inning That was the second when GP socked four hits for both of its runs. A sensational diving catch by Second Baseman Larry Per kins helped the tosser of one anxious moment. Ed Reinking of Medford drew a base on balls with two men out in the first inning. Larry Gober singled. An overthrow at sec ond' on Dick McLaughlin's ground ball to Shortstop Chuck Nevi allowed Reinking to tally. Nevi, Dennis Eckstein, Walt McCurdy and Scott Tippets got the singles for Grants Pass in its second inning splurge. Pete Proctor's sacrifice helped out. McLaughlin Triples Larry Gober led off with a single for Medford in the fourth inning. McLaughlin .clubbed a triple base fly down the left field line, scoring Gober. Then McL.augniin came home on a wild pitch. Dennis King was hit by a pitched ball, Jim Putney singled and Ron Peery walked to load the bases. Gordon Ows ley grounded out shortstop to first base but that allowed King to come home with Medford's fourth and final marker. Grass Level Catch Grants Pass got two men on base with two out in the third and sixth innings. On the first occasion Sides settled the mat ter by striking out Eckstein. In the sixth Perkins snared Tip pets pop fly right at the grass tops to end the GP batting turn. Sides allowed only one walk and hit one batter. He fanned five. Cochell walked three, hit one and had three strikeouts. Gober hit two for two for Med ford while McCurdy had a two for three batting day for Grants Pass. The game was the last regu larly scheduled one in the loop for Grants Pass. Medford only needs one at Klamath Falls but will be after victories in both tussles. Grants Pass still has a chance for the mantle. Should Klamath spill Medford twice on Saturday, the Tornado and GP will be tied for the title, neces sitating a playoff. Yesterday's victory followed an 8 to 5 win over the Cavemen by Medford and was the Tor nado's third win over GP in four games this year. Talent won the Jackson County B League title and Merrill was victor in Klamath county. Both clubs were unbeaten in loop encounters. Errors Plague PCL Teams; Mounties Beat Portland By DON THACKREY United Press Sports Writer Last night it was boot, boot boot for the home team in the Pacific Coast league as seven red-faced squads came up with a total of 19 errors. Only the Seattle Rainfers played flawless ball as they moved into Second place with a 5-0 shutout over the Hollywood Stars, who were charged . with three miscues. ... Although the Los Angeles Angels dribbled the ball three times, they kept a tight hold on their two-game lead on the pack by dropping the Solons out of the No. 2 spot. In other games San Diego de feated San Francisco, 7-3, and Vancouver rapped Portland, 8-3. The Padres had five errors, the Seals committed three, and the Mounties and Beavers evened off at one each. Six Hit Hurling Seattle got its victory on the crisp six-hit pitching of Bud Podbielan and a 10-hit attack sparked by Ray Orteig's two- run homer in the sixth inning. Jim McDonald's six-hit pitch ing and Jim Westlake's three- run homer sparked the Vancou ver Mountaies to their win. Eureka Boy Shining in Prep Circles By HAL WOOD i San Francisco (U.R) : A 17-year-old high school kid at Eu reka, Calif., with a fast baU that explodes like a fire-cracker when it hits the catcher's mitt, is setting prep school circles afire in Northern California. His name is Wa"de Hammond, a 165-pound right-hander who stands 5-1 land is a senior at Eu reka High school. So far this season, Hammond has: 1 Pitched five consecutive shut outs. 2 Pitched three no-hit games. 3 Allowed only one hit in each of the other two games. 4 Struck out 73 batters in 43 innings, walking only 14. 5 Batted at a 377 clip, play ing third base when he doesn't pitch. Pros Haven't Heard The professional scouts have not heard of this boy yet, be cause Eureka is pretty much back in the logging country. It is about 250 miles north of an San Francisco and, according to local coaches, there hasn't been a big league scout in the park this year. The remarkable thing about Hammond's pitching is the fact that he uses -a fast .ball almost exclusively to get l?y. In a seven inning one-hit shut-out against another high school team recent ly he struck out 19 batters all except two that he faced. Hammond, son of a truck driver, didn't want to be a pitch er. Last year he played third base for the local American Le gion team. But he whipped the ball over to first base with such speed that his high school coach asked him to take a hand on the mound. ; Beat Fertuna His last game, Tuesday night, was a 1-0 no-hitter against For tuna High school. The previous week he had a no-hitter going with two out in the ninth inning before allowing -his first hit. ! Mis Eureka High school team has a record of IS wins and no losses and is a flossy-fielding outfit as prep school teams go. In the 16 games, the club has made only 19 errors. Hammond probably isn't ready to sign a baseball contract right now. "I want to be a professional baseball player," he says. "But I would like to go to college first." He plans to go to Humboldt State college, at Areata, near Eureka. But when the scouts start mov ing in, he'll probably wind up at a Pacific Coast Conference school. Harney's face was beet-red on Sunday when the first returns of the deal came in. They showed that Harvey Haddix was kayoed in his debut with .the Phillies while Murry Dickson and Her man Wehmeier starred for the Cardinals. It raised speculation that Lane had clinched the deal by promising to send Harney the Brooklyn Bridge on the next slow' freight to Philadelphia. But Tuesday night ex-C a r d Stu Miller tossed a six-hitter against the Milwaukee Braves to snap the Phillies' 10-game losing streak and Wednesday night in fielder Solly Hemus, also obtain ed from the Cardinals in the deal singled, with the bases filled in the ninth inning to give Robin Roberts a 2-1 "decision over Bob Buhl. At the same time the Brook lyn Dodgers tagged Wehmeier with his third defeat in downing the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-3, in their "home away from home" at Jersey City. The" victory was the world champions' sixth straight and put them only 38 percentage points out of first place. Solly's First Appearance Hemus, who had entered the game at second base in the eighth inning, made his first appearance at the plate for his new club aft er Del Ennis' single, a walk and center fielder Bill Bruton's muff of a fly filled the bases with one out. Hemus fouled off Buhl's first pitch and then lined the next one into right field for the game- winning single. The Dodgers took advantage of errors by catcher Hal Smith and third-baseman Ken Boyer to pour five unearned runs over the plate in the fifth inning and beat the Cardinals for the sec ond straight game. Eugene's crafty left hander was 16-5 for the Northwest champs last season and this year has already turned in two vic tories in one week since rejoin ing the Oregon club. Hodges . pitched a steady six hitter last night as the Emeralds gained their sixth straight with a 6-3 decision over Lewiston. The victory kept Eugene atop the seven-club loop only per centage points ahead of Yakima. What Doctor Ordered 'Yakima continued to ' find Spokane pitching just what the doctor ordered. The Bears cash ed in 19 hits for a 13-4 victory over the Indians. A lot of heavy thinking went to waste at Salem where Tri City took Salem 8-6. The Braves did it with a 3-run eighth inning rally that jelled when an inten tional walk went awry. Milt Martin led off the eighth with a single but the next two batters were retired without trouble. Danny Holden then was deliberately passed - but Gene Laursen tripled for two runs. Pinch hitter Jim Hill follow ed with a run-producing single. Grant Faces 1955 Champ Portland (U.R) The Dal les, defending state high school baseball champion, will meet Grant high of Portland, the run nerup in city league play, in the first quarter-final game of the state playoffs that has been set thus far. The game will be played at The Dalles, May 25. Grant carries a 15-5 record into the state playoffs while The Dalles is unbeaten in 18 starts. : Lincoln, champion of Port land's city loop, also has quali fied for the quarter finals al ready. North Salem is only one game away from a berth and appears to be set to" go against Lincoln in the quarter final 1 play. Lane Shuts Out Vandals Moscow, Ida (U.R) Oregon left handed hurler Don Lane shut out the Idaho Vandals 8 to 0 and allowed only four hits in a Northern division baseball con test yesterday. The Ducks led only 2-0 going into the ninth when the Idaho defense fell apart and Oregon picked up six runs on five hits and five Vandal errors. Idaho threatened in the fourth when it filled the bases with two singles and a walk with one out but a pop-out and a force at second base ended the threat. Vandal batters Ray Copeland and Dwayne Moore collected two hits apiece from Lane. Jackson Takes Grade Loop Lead Jackson took the lone lead in the city grade school baseball circuit yesterday with a 5 to 4 win over Roosevelt. Jackson got all its runs in the last of the fifth frame. St. Mary's defeated Washing ton 4 to 1 on Tuesday. Wolf homered for the only Washing ton marker.
