Princess Margaret
May Marry Dashing
German, Paper Says

day there were new "rumors"
that Princess Margaret may
marry a dashing German prince
who once captured two purse
natcheri in New York's Central
Park.
Buckingham Palace refused
immediate comment on the re
ports. The prince is 35-year-old
Christian of Hanover who was
a cavalry officer in a German
regiment that fought the Rus
sians during World War II. He
is a distant cousin of the prin
cess and a great-great-great
grandson of Queen Victoria.
Prince Christian also is a
brother of Queen Frederika of
Examinations Set
For Children Who
Will Enter School
Children who expect to enter
school next fall should be exam
ined by a physician so the child
may have an opportunity to
have correctable physical de
fects corrected before starting
school, according to Medford
city school nurses, Olive Curry
and DeLores Rabjohn.
They pointed out It is best to
have family physicians conduct
examinations because equip
ment is available in an office for
a thorough examination and the
physician is more familiar with
the child.
The Medford school will have
a physician and other profes
sional personnel in various
schools next week for the annual
summer round up, they said. The
sessions are for those who find
it Inconvenient to visit family
physicians, the nurses said.
The schedule for school visits
Include Jefferson school, Mon
day, May 21; Washington school,
Tuesday, May 22; Roosevelt
school, Wednesday, May 23;
Jackson school .Thursday, May
24; and Lincoln school, Friday,
May 25. Clinics will be open be
tween 9:30 and 11 a.m. each day,
and parents are urged to bring
children as soon after 9:30 a.m.
as possible.
The nurses reminded parents
to fill out the Oregon Pupil
Medical record form at home
and take it when the child has
the examination, either by a
family physician or at the school.

Both the prince and the duke
were brought up in Germany.
The prince left Germany after
the war for the United States
but now works as director of a
shipping company in London.
Two years ago in New York he
captured two thieves in Central
Park. He was riding in a taxi
when he saw two thugs snatch
a woman's purse. He leaped out,
felled both with a flying tackle
and pinned one to the ground.
The cabby called a policeman to
arrest the other.
The princess has be&n enter
tained by the prince and he has
been a guest at Windsor Castle.
But they seldom have been seen
together in public and he has
not taken an active part in
London's social life.
The Express said he told a re
porter Monday "I can neither
confirm nor deny" the reports of
an engagement. The Express said
it had received hundreds of tele
phone calls asking if the story
were really true.
American newspapers printed
rumors of a romance last Novem
ber after Group Captain Peter
Townsend returned dejectedly
to Brussels when Princess Mar
garet decided she could not
marry him. The reports were
recently revived in Greece and
Germany.

A Brooklyn high school girl
won $8,000 by answering ques
tions on "ancient history," and
a Fairborn, O., housewife also
advanced through the $8000 lev
el on the CBS-TV show "The
$64,000 Question."
Dr. Francis Salvatore, 32, 'the
obstetrician, identified the es
sential distinguishing ingredient
in a number of exotic dishes.
He returns next week to an
nounce whether he will take the
$16,000 he already has won or
try for the $32,000 question.
Ethne Chesterman of Brook
lyn named five Roman emperors
in order of their succession to
win $8000 and a chance for the
$16,000 question next week.
Mrs. Bobbye t O'Rourke, 24,
the Ohio housewife, won her
$8000 by answering questions on
Sherlock Holmes.

Strom Named Head ;

Perry Strom was elected
president of the Medford chap
ter of the Oregon School Em
ployees association at the annual
meeting recently at McLoughlin
Junior High school.
Other officers elected were
Ike Johnson, vice president;
Clifford Hutchins, secretary; and
Al Mercer, treasurer.
Plans and committee reports
of the state conference were dis
cussed and delegates elected to
represent the local chapter were
Bernard Rice, Perry Strom,
Russ Davis, R. E. (Bud) Wicker,
Al Mercer and Gwen Peterson.
The Oregon School Employ
ees association conference and
training program will be held at
Medford High school June 13
through 16 this year with dele
gates and employees from
throughout the state attending.
The training program includes
classes for custodians, mainten
ance men, supervisors, bus driv
ers, and cafeteria workers. ;
Russia Challenged
On Press Freedom
Moscow (U.R) French Pre
mier Guy Mollet challenged the
Soviet Union today to permit
greater freedom of the press and
travel "without concern for pro
paganda" to bring about greater
East-West friendliness.
Mollet made his appeal in a
lunch speech following a morn
ing session with Soviet Premier
Nikolai Bulganin and Commun
ist party secretary, Nikita Khru
shchev, at the start of their "lit
tle summit" conference.
Officials said after the open
ing talks, which were a further
effort to lessen East-West ten
sion, that- there had been "a
frank exchange of opinions" on
disarmament.
In his lunch speech, Mollet
said that "the press, radio, cin
ema and travel" are the best
means to bring the East and
West together."
