Army sources have disclosed that Russia has equipped its huge army with a "deadly new family of weapons" in a vast mo dernization program for atomic age warfare. Some military authorities be; lieved that the new Russia em phasis on mobility and increased firepower may explain the Sov iet' professed willingness t o cut down the numbers of men in Its standing forces. "The Soviet re-equipment pro gram is an accomplished fact," Army sources said. "These. weap ons are now at the disposal of Bed army units, not on the draw ing boards or in the initial stag- i es of production." I The new Soviet army, it was I said, is organized not for defens I ive but for offensive tactics on I atomic battlefields. McAulay, will sail from San Francisco Au gust 3 for Canberra, Australia, to participate in the International Exchange program of the feder al government under a Full bright grant. Before leaving for Australia, Dr. McAulay will teach a six week's summer course in school curriculum, social studies, and methods at the University of Tennessee. Enroute to Australia, Dr. Mc Aulay and family will visit Ha waii, Tahiti, Samoa, and Pago Pago. Upon arrival he will be stationed at the University of Melbourne through December, the University of Tasmania until March, and will finish out his teaching stint at the University of South Wales. Dr. McAulay will serve as con sultant, evaluator, and teacher to teacher education institutions in New Zealand beginning in June. His classes will be con cerned with the philosophy and psychology of the American pub lic school system with some em phasis on history. ican 280 millimeter atomic can non. Along with new trucks, a gi ant helicopter and new lightly armored amphibious vehicles, the new weapons make the Rus sian army a highly mobile force which is a far cry from the horse and cart Russian army of World War II, the U. S. Army sources said. High Capacity They said all the new equip ment indicates "a high capacity for operations in small, self-contained, well-dispersed armored task forces." Commenting on the new Rus sian weapons in its June issue, the magazine True says that "Many if not most of them out class anything the United States Army now has." The magazine contended the Russian army now has "tipped the military scales against us." The U.S. Army would not com ment on the conclusions drawn by True from data similar to that provided other reporters. Applications Being Received for Jobs The civil service commission has announced that applications are being accepted for agricul tural engineering research posi tions for duty in the department of agriculture in Washington, D. C, and in other areas. Positions are also open for aeronautical research scientists. OPEN TONIGHT UNTIL 9 FOR YOUR SHOPPING CONVENIENCE Spring Concert At McLoughlin Junior High Set Friday The annual spring concert by the music department of Mc Loughlin Junior High school will be hejd at 8 p.m. Friday, May 18, at the school. A total of 300 singers will pre sent a musical program featur ing the seventh grade chorus, the eighth and ninth grade girls chorus, and the eighth and ninth mixed chorus. Ray Lewis will direct the choruses and Melody Pierce will be the accompanist. The 85-piece concert band, un- der the baton of Al Huntemann, will present five numbers. In cluded in their program will be a novelty number featuring Lor etta Ayres, an eighth grade stud ent, at the piano. Other numbers will include three marches and "Eroica" which is based on the main themes from Beethoven's third symphony. Cadet Band Huntemann will also direct the cadet band in its appearance on the program. The group re cently received a superior rating at the Southern Oregon College Music contest, and will play three numbers in the spring con cert. John Drysdale will lead the combined Hedrick and Mc Loughlin orchestra which con tains 70 members. They will play three selections, one of which will be "Excerpts from the Sixth Symphony" by Tschai-kowski. The public is invited to attend. (U.R) New York state's new super-highway from Buffalo to Yonkers is at tracting more and more truck traffic. The state Thruway Authority said the "solid operating econ omy possible on the 427-mile route has been demonstrated factually, and big trucking firms are switching their operations in increasing numbers to the -new super-highway from former routes over other highways. , The reason for the switch, the authority said, is that truck oper ators are realistic businessmen, and they do eot make changes unless there is a saving in money and more efficient operations. A number of large trucking firms have made test runs on the Thruway and have compared the results with tests made on other roads between the same two des tinations. ' General Electric Co. in Schen ectady was one. It ran trucks from Schenectady to Williams ville;' near Buffalo, over regular roads and made comparisons with a delivery over the Thru- way between the same two points. The Thruway saved the truck 38 miles of travel. It saved 14.2 gallons of fuel, 298 gear shifts, 142 brake applications and 69 full stops. Also, on the Thuway the truck averaged better than 10 miles an hour faster, and sav ed four hours and 29 minutes for the round trip. Adva'ntages Listed A similar test w.as made by Riss & Co., of Kansas City, which claims to be the nation's largest regular route motor carrier. Equal savings in time and money were reported by the firm which hailed the Thruway a "tremen dous advance" in transportation. "New York state pointed the way to better transportation sys tems along with Pennsylvania and New Jersey," said Robert B. Riss, president of the com pany. "The examples set by these states should, help accelerate similar . projects by other forward-looking state administra tions throughout the nation." The Thruway Authority point ed out that the Thruway is ex empt from the state's weight distance tax for all toll mileage travelled' on the highway; a charge account system is pro vided for toll charges which gives, trucking firms an accurate billing and provides them with a record of vehicle routes; there is greater safety. The ride is smoother, has fewer curves and stops, an especially important thing for truckers who have to cart such commodities as eggs, canned goods, bottled goods and similar type's' of fragile materials. The Authority said the road also provides a better utilization of manpower by permitting faster trips which are less tiring and makes possible longer runs than on other roads. There also is an efficient com munications system setup on the Thruway, making is possible for trucking firms to keep in con tact with home offices. 'Vacation Land' Is Theme of Festival Phoenix "Vacation Land" will be the theme for "the an nual Phoenix Festival parade May 26, according to Warren and David Haggard, parade chairmen. Residents and organizations are invited to register floats in the parade to compete for a trophy and cash awards. The 32-inch gold trophy was won three times for permanent pos session by the Phoenix Garden club but the club decided to keep the trophy in circulation and released it to be awarded again this year. Participating floats and decor ated cars will be judged on beauty, design and execution of theme, originality, and use of decorations and color harmony. Candidates for queen for the Festival are selling tickets. Prizes will be awarded May 26 during two dances. A modern dance is being held in the com munity building and a square dance in the grade school gym. Entertainment will be provid ed during the day on the grounds of the community club. Three of Four Families Own Television Sets Washington (U.R) About three of every four American families own television sets, the Census Bureau reports. The bureau said Tuesday it found in a survey last Febru ary that 35 million of the 45 million households in the coun try had one or more TV sets.
