The Klamath county team tabulated 100 3-4 points. Another Klamath powerhouse was runner-up in the meet as Malin counted up 85'4. St. Mary's of Medford was third with 76Vi and Rogue Riv er took fourth with 74 3-4. Other scores were 44 for Merrill, Pros pect 21, Jacksonville 20 3-4 and Gilchrist 10. Bonanza led in placing for the state meet next week-end at Springfield with eight posi tions. Rogue River got five, Ma lin and St. Marys each four. Merrill three, Prospect two and Jacksonville and Gilchrist each one. Gerald Darland of St. Mary's who won the shot put and the quarter-mile and Dick Burnett of Bonanza, who nabbed both sprints were the double winners of the day. ' Gray Stewart of Rogue River came near a double victory. He captured the broad jump and shared the high jump first spot with Don Vannice of Prospect. SM Second In Relay St. Mary's was second in the relay and Bill Carey was second In the half-mile to give the Cru saders their other two state meet placings. In addition to Burnett's win in the dashes, Bonanza's relay team was victor and Jack Horn took the mile for that school, Seconds for Bonanza were Ken Kennedy in the pole vault, Ron Ketcham -in the javeline and 440 and Ron Roberts in the low hurdles. For Malin Len Dobry won the discus and was second in the shot and firsts were tallied by Gordon Kandra in the high hurdles and Glen Steyskal in the low hurdles. Added to Stewart's efforts for ' Rogue River were, Don Hoff man s first in the pole vault and seconds by Russ Miller in the discus and Bill Weaver in the 220-yard sprint. Jack Barry won the 880 for Merrill and was sec ond in the 100-yard dash. Along with his tie for first in the high jump, Don Vannice got runner-up place in the broad jump for another state meet berth. Charles Patterson won the Landy Sets 3:59.1 Run Fresno," Calif. (U.R) Fabu lous John Landy cracked the four-minute barrier for the sec ond time in eight days as he eas ily won the Special Invitational Mile at the West Coast relays in 3:59.1 Saturday night. Landy made his remarkable run with practically no opposi tion. Ron Delany. of Villanova fin ished second about 50 yards batk. Landy running in the number one lane. Took the lead early and -held it all the way. MEDFOBDtSaWTRIBUNE ipaDinrs Trophy To High Overall Gunner Planned in Mail Tribune Shoot A trophy will go to the high overall shooter on the 500-tar- get program next Saturday and Sunday when Medford Gun club stages the 23rd annual Medford Mail Tribune trapshooting tour nament. Gunners will fire at 100 tar gets at 16 yards, 100 handicap birds and 25 pairs of doubles each dav of the shoot. Events are Pacific International Trapshoot ing association registered. The Mail Tribune trophy will go to the winner of the Sunday morning 16-d a y competition. Winner last year was John Wil- lener, Eugene. He is one of six men who has broken 100-straight targets to take the prize. To the top gun for B class and lower also will go the Mendenhall tro phy, E. E. Driscoll, Klamath Falls, claimed in 1955. Team Shoot Planned Lead off event of the tourney next Saturday will be the Rogue Valley Hundred, a 16-yard test. The Chester Wood handicap is billed for Saturday afternoon. The Wood perpetual purse and trophy go on the first 50 birds. First time winner gets $10 and a repeat winner $100. Sunday afternoon s program will include the $300 Medford handicap. (U.R) A great six and two-thirds inning relief job by Fred Green stop ped the Vancouver Mounties cold Saturday as the Hollywood Stars won their second straight game, 6 to 2, and the first game of a twin-bill in Pacific Coast League play at Vancouver. Green came into the game in the third inning when the Moun ties had rallied to cut Holly wood's lead to a narrow 3-2. The tall left-hander got out of the inning without any further runs being scored, then com menced to pitch runless ball for the rest of the game. , The victory was Green's first of the season and he received most of his batting support from Hollywood's little shortstop, Dick Smith. Mickel To Coach Burns Basketball Burns (U.R) High school of ficials here today announced ap pointment of Art Mickel to be head basketball coach and Grant Budge to be football coach. Mickel has been at Granger, Wash., the past three years. He is a graduate of Florida South ern. Budge is a graduate of the University of Utah and has been at Edna, Ida., high school the past five years. C (U.R) Duke's Dave Sime eclipsed the world record and set three conference marks Friday in the prelimin aries of the Atlantic Coast Con ference track championships. The carrot-topped flash ran the 220-yard dash in 20.1 sec onds, beating the mark of 20.2 set by Mel Patton in 1949. Sime's 220 time was a new loop standard. He also ran the 100-yard dash in 9.5 and the 220 low hurdles in 23.5. A week ago Sime ran the low hurdles in 22.2 breaking the world record of 22.3 establish ed by Harrison Dillard. The Duke sprinter has run the 100 in 9.4 six times in the past month. Another Life Claimed By Italian Auto Race , Desenzano, Italy (U.R) The death-toll from the April '29 "Mille Miglia," 1,000 miles auto race, rose to seven Saturday when Pietro Chione, a 57-year-old fan who was hit by a car during the running of the race, died. Jim Bailey, who comes from Australia and who is attending the University of Oregon, and Miss Janet Somers, his Oregon sweetheart, plan to marry, al though the date has not been set. Miss Somers, of Fall Creek near Eugene, made the announce ment of her engagement to Bailey at her sorority on the campus here Friday night. International Figure Bailey became an internation al figure in sports last Saturday when he ran the mile at Los An geles in 3:58.6, the fastest it has ever been run in the United States. Bailey plans to work In Port land this summer until late August or early September when he will leave to take part in pre-Olympic games track events. He will return to the University of Oregon for his final year next winter term. The jamboree will be on Sunday. May 20, at Hawthorne park and the opening garnet on Monday evening. May 21, at the senior high stadium. Vice President Gary Colion said that the jamboree was put off in deference to Mother's day and thai difficulties in getting the field ready delayed start of the regular season for a week. Colton said that a league meeting has been set for Wed nesday. It will be at 8 p.m. at the YMCA. Team captains are asked to be present and to have their entry fee with them. Also approved was expendi ture of $2,600 for access road, concrete boat launching ramp and parking area on the Johns tract near Tiernan on the Sius law river. The 29-year-old "veteran from Anderson, Ind., used a blazing fast ball to no-hit the Chicago Cubs back on June 19, 1952. tiis speed was gone today, but his , guile and courage carried him through. Seals Down Angels, 7-3 Los Angeles (U.R) Bob Di Pietro led a San Francisco red hot batting attack with two singles and a double Saturday to pace the Seals to a 7-3 win over Los Angeles in a Pacific Coast League game before 2,665 fans at Wrigley Field. The Seals evened the series at 1-1 by collecting 17 hits off four Angel hurlers. It was the most hits San Francisco has collected this season and the most hits off Los Angeles this season. The Seals socked three homers and six doubles. Boat launching ramps will be built at two Josephine county parks, Schroeder and Upper Ferry parks above Robertson bridge.
