Democrats Hold Lead in Oregon Salem TJ.R) With voter re gistrations in from all of the state' 36 counties and nearly all of tham officially tabulated, the Democrats hold a 15,901 edge on Republican party in the state. The Democrats hold a majority in 22 of the 36 counties. In the primary elections of 1954 the Re publicans held a majority in 22 counties. Totals show the Democratic party with a gain of 16,066 over the party's registration for the 1954 primary election and a total of 394,847 registered voters. The Republican rolls show a decline of 15, 975 from 1954 and a current total of 378,946. A Nichol's Worth of ... Comment On This and That By HARMAN W. NICHOLS United Press Feature Writer Washington (U.R) The old saw "appetite like a bird" must have been the dream of some poet. Fact is, lit tle birds, when 4hey put their beaks to the important business of survival, can out - eat mere man or even pachyderm. The National Harman Nicbols vjeugiayu- ic society, which is interested in looking into what goes into the craws of our fine feathered friends, has made a nest-to-nest survey. These consult with clergymen of ail faithi and denominations. All letters are held in complete confidence. Mrs. S. S. My sister and my daughter have become bitter enemies. Lillian S. Why should Aunt Connie live with us? e Mrs. S. S. When my mother died five years ago, I asked my youngest sister, who is now 37 and unmarried to come to stay with us. She is a lonely, unhappy girl, who has never gotten along well with people and I didn't like to think of her being alone Ever since she came, my 17 year-old daughter had resented her and now they have become bitter enemies. My daughter doesn't want Connie to stay with us, but I can't very well send my sister out in the world alone. There is nobody else with whom she can live. Connie really has a very good heart despite her faults and I want Lillian to love her. It's true that Connie crit icizes me and my parents. What right has she to act that way? Mother says it's only because she loves us, but I don't want to be loved that way. The truth is Aunt Connie is a plain old maid and she hates me. The Council: The unhappiness in this home appears to stem largely from Mrs. S. S.'s mater nal and overprotective attitude toward her sister. Lillian rightly feels that Connie is being taken into the home as another daugh ter, and resents this. Connie, too, appears to be all too ready to settle into the position of her sister's older daughter and to have all the rights and privileges of a member of the family. Lillian may be exaggerating in a teen-ager's self-dramatizing way when she says that her aunt hates, but her mother should consider the possibility that there is some element of truth in Lil lian's accusation that her aunt has an old maidish resentment against her. This is not a healthy situation for anyone in the family least of all for Connie who is supposed to be the recipient of her sister's kindness. It is all very fine for Mrs. S. S. to offer her lonely sister a place in her home, but her conduct should be a sisterly one, which takes the 37-year-old woman on an equal level. Her pampering of Connie and her pity for her are not helpful. If Connie were expected to respect the integrity of this family, she would have to reach out to find more satisfying and intimate re lationships of her own and would perhaps be forced to correct the conduct, which causes her to lose friends. Much damage has been done here, but it is still possible that Lillian can grow to accept and like her aunt if Mrs. S. S. tries to correct her own attitude and obtains Connie's cooperation. Mrs. S. S. needs to feel and to show her daughter that the girl's happiness is her first considera tion. If Lillian is sure of this she will be less inclined to feud with her aunt. And at Yosemite National park it was observed that the tummy of a flicker, a quail and a nighthawk contained respec tively 3,000 ants, 500 chinch bugs and 500 mosquitoes and that doesn't include a dessert of seeds from weeds. Full Meal In order to carry on at the grub board like that a member of the human race would have to gobble two or three lambs or a whole calf a day. The kids we raise these days would bust at that. And grownups in our set those weighing in at say 150 pounds eat only 1,531 pounds of foodstuffs a year. I am here to tell you that we humans should not run around killing birds. Many of them help nature to keep a well-balanced pattern. If the winged creatures and others among God's chosen did n't play at war for survival a lot of harmful insects, rodents and weeds and other pests would run us off the planet. In addition to birds, other small inhabitants of the acres of the world also are on our team. For instance, the shrew. That lit tle fellow is at the food trough every few minutes. He can wash down his weight in grubs every three hours. Animals I love, being a circus fan. But I didn't know the break down on the intake in food of the elephant until just now. These . big fellows, weighing some 10,000 pounds, are relative ly light eaters, compared to the robin or the whang-doodle. The flap-eared big guy will eat only 150 pounds of hay and drink only 50 gallons of water a day. The Greenland whale isn't very smart. Instead of prowling the underseas fof big game, he fills his belly with crustaceans and almost microscopic submarine life. It takes this 50-to-60 foot fel low a long time to get himself a mouthful. But if a fast whale works hard at it and gulps often enough he can stow away between 200 and 300 pounds a day. That sort of eating would put fellows like you and me six feet under in no time at all. In my ' case, a couple of extra pounds gives me pause for thought. Arab Guerrillas Fight Mechanized French Army Algiers (U.R) A thousand Arab guerrillas, outnumbered three to one, were fighting the mechanized might of the French army yesterday amid the orange groves and vineyards of north western Algeria. There was no immediate re port of casualties in the battles raging at Rio Salado and Pont L'Isser, some 40 miles southwest of Oran.
