MEDFOWVWrRrBUNS STANDINGS TRIBE QUIETS TALK ABOUT NY RUNAWAY By UNITED PRESS Manager Al Lopez professed surprise today that his Cleve land Indians were being credited with preventing the New York Yankees from making a run away of the American League pennant race. "I never had the feeling the Yankees were going to make a runaway of the race and I cer tainly don't have it now," Lopez said after Thursday's 7-2 victory that gave the Indians a 2-1 edge in the season's first series be tween the two top contenders. "Frankly, I can't imagine how all that talk started." Lopez was more impressed with the fact that the Indians are opening a 13-day home stand against the Kansas City Athletics tonight and pointed out that "We really haven't been home since March 1" due to a quirk in the AL schedule. The Indians have played only four home games so far this season. Home Looks Good "Home's sure going to look good to us all," Lopez said. "We had a tough time starting out because we played so many road games early in the season but we've come through all right and we figure to get better." The experts began to talk of a runaway race whea the Yankees beat the Indians in the series opener to give them a season's record of 14-5 and a 7-1 mark against the Tribe, Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox. The talk quieted down a bit when the Indians , beat the Yankees, 6-5, Wednesday and it died out completely as the Tribe made it two in a row Thursday. Instead, the talk was mostly about Bob Lemon, the 35-year-old veteran who pitched his first complete game against the Yan kees since Sept. 20, 1954 in de feating them Thursday. Lemon had an 18-10 record last season but pitched only five complete games. He's pitched four so far this season. He pitched well last year but he couldn't finish his games. But now it looks like he's going to have a wonderful season." Lemon limited the Yankees to eight hits, including homers by Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra, walked only two batters and struck out five. The Indians supported him with an eight-hit attack that routed Mickey Mc Dermott in five frames. The victory left the second place Indians only two games behind the Yankees, they would have been six behind if the Yan kees swept the series and also held the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox close to the field. The White Sox beat the Red Sox, 2-1, on George Kell's homer in the only other major league game played Thursday. If more heavy rain fell today or the two fields proved to be too wet, plans were to play the tussle here on Saturday after noon. Rain throughout the day yes terday forced postponement until next Tuesday of a game at Grants Pass which had been contemplated. Sam Snead Has Lead in Greenbrier By FRED FERRIS White Sulphur Springs, Va. (U.R) Sammy Snead was out in front in his "private" golf tour nament today and, if any rivals are hoping the old Slammer will beat himself, they can stop dreaming now. Playing his home course in a safe-and-sane manner on every hole, Snead clipped five strokes off par with a 65 in Thursday's opening round to take a one stroke lead in . the Greenbrier Open Golf Tournament which he has won three times before. Mike Fetchick of New York settled for second place at 66 when he missed a 12-foot putt on the 18th green that would have given him a tie. Jack Isaacs of Hampton, Va., was right behind at 67 and then came six players at 69 and six more at par 70. After that the invitation blue-ribbon field trail ed down to Craig Wood of Ma maroneck, N. Y., in last place at 77. Down Middle Snead played 'em straight down the middle all through the first round and just played for two-putt greens. The strategy paid off, because he never stray ed over par and enough of the longer putts dropped to give him five birdies. He got two of those birdies on the last two holes and needed them, because Fetchick was staying at par or better, too. Snead dropped a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th. Snead, who had 31 putts in the round, first claimed his put ting was "nothing to shout about," and then admitted "Those short ones that don't go in were falling for me." Sammy lamented an approach shot that stopped six inches short of the cup on the 356-yard 14th hole, missing an eagle by that much. Fetchick wasn't making any extravagant claims after his opening round, just grinning and replying, "I can't complain" to queries about his first round. Tied at 69 were Gil Cavanaugh of Cedarhurst, N. Y., Vic Ghezzi of Inwood, N. Y., Ed Porky Oliv er of Wilmington, Del., Skee Riegel of Ithan, Pa., Henry Cot ton of London, and James Farree of Winston-Salem, N. C. MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE ELEVEN Oregon Has Favored Role in ND Conflict Eugene (U.R) Coach Bill Bowerman's Oregon track team, led by miler Jim Bailey, was favored today to win the North ern Division track and field championship here tomorrow. " The defending champion Ducks are undefeated so far in dual meet competition. Bailey,will run the mile with out opposition from Bill Dell inger, his teammate, according to present plans. Dellinger will stick to the two-mile. A large crowd is expected for the mile because of Bailey's sensational 3:58.6 performance in defeating John Landy last week in Los Angeles. The mile race starts at 2 p.m. Dellinger Eyes Mark Dellinger is considered to have a good chance to crack the meet mark in the two mile. It is 9:11.3 set last year by Ken Reiser of Oregon. Dellinger has done a 9:03.1 this season. Larry Pulford of Washington is given a chance to erase the shotput mark of 52 feet 7.8 inch set in 1934 by George Theo dratue of Washington State. Darrell Pearson of Washing ton State has tossed the javelin more than 225 feet this spring. The division record is 223 feet, 6 inches set by Boyd Brown of Oregon in 1940. Lewis Elected UW Co-Captain Seattle U.R) Washington has chosen an Oregon man as a co-captain for its football team. He is Corky Lewis of Hood River, a veteran end. The other co-captain is Bobby Dunn, half back, who hails from Vancou ver, Wash., just across the river from Portland. Finsterwald Sets Pace in Carlinq St. Louis U.R) Round two got underway today in the $25, 000 Carling Open Golf tourna ment with young Don Finster wald leading the field of 91, in cluding Masters winner Jackie Burke, with a seven-under-par 65. Burke, of Kiamesha Lake, N.Y., passed up- the practice round Thursday because of a cold, but sparkled with his ap proach shots and had seven birdies and two bogeys for his 67 total on the par-72 course at Sunset Country club. Skull Fracture Kills Baseballer Marshalltown, Iowa (U.R) Jack Baker, 14, died Thursday of a skull fracture suffered when he was hit by a thrown ball while trying to steal from third base to home plate in a high school baseball game.
