Palm er, a leader in the campaign to elect Bob Mautz as Republican national committeeman, yester day labeled as "strictly false" a statement made Sunday at a .Young Republican meeting ac cusing Mautz of spending $30, 000 on his campaign. "The sum of money referred to by a Young Republican in a press article as having been ex pended is entirely false," Palmer said. "The fact is that less than one fourth of the amount claimed to have been spent on the Mautz campaign has actual ly been spent to date for all ex penses, including billboards." (U.R) A marine biologist reports seeing a group of killer whales, among the most vicious inhab itants of the sea, leaping for low flying birds off the Northern California coast. Richard Boolootian of - t h e Hopkins Marine station said he spotted five of the killer whales Monday, four 20-foot females and one 30-foot bull. He said they were devouring cormorants on the wing. He followed them on the shore for four hours. The area in which he spotted them is about 100 miles south of San Francisco. Bootoolian said the killer whale will attack anything. On the morning of April 18, Com mander Crabb went out about 8:30. That morning the Russian cruiser arrived. Both returned that evening and stayed a second night. Strange Actions "On the 19th, Commander Crabb went out alone about 8:30 again. In the middle of the morn ing, the second man came to the office, paid the bill for both and left. Some days later Superin tendent Jack Lamport of the Portsmouth secret police called and took four pages of names from the hotel register, including those of Crabb and his friend. Ten days later the Admiralty made the announcement that Crabb was missing and "pre sumed dead." It said he had been experimenting with "cer tain underwater apparatus." It refused to discuss the case furth er. Curious newsmen, following up the story, came up with some surprising intelligence from the usually silent Russian embassy in London. A naval attache there Eight Children, Two Mothers Die In Home Fires By UNITED PRESS Eight children and two moth ers died in fires last night and today. At Hopkins, Minn., Mrs. Lu cille Cottrill; 40, and her daugh ters, Susan, 8, and Linda, 6, suf focated in a fire which poured smoke through their one-story home, for two hours before it was discovered. Two Others Escape ' Two other children, Sandra, 16, and Dennis, 12, were asleep in the basement and escaped through basement windows. At Southampton, N.Y., three Negro children burned to death in their two-story frame home early today. The parents sur vived but the father was injur ed in a futile effort to save his children. The youngsters died before firemen could reach them. At Waterloo, Ont., last night, Allen Rumig returned to his farm home and became the help less witness of the death xsl his 13-year-old wife and three chil dren. Ran Out Of Gasoline Rumig spotted his blazing two-story home from a nearby farm. He drove toward the scene, but his car ran out of gas oline on the way. He finally got a lift to his home, but it was already en gulfed in searing flames. He could hear his ' family scream ing, but his repeated efforts to rescue them were futile. Building Servicemen Win Wage Increase Portland (U.R) About 1000 AFL-CIO building service em ployees here have won wage in creases of at least 10 cents an hour in new agreements with employers. Some believe he was operat ing on his own possibility out of sheer daring. It is known that intelligence agents ques tioned his friends after his dis The theory goes further that he disappeared by official order because he was operating unof ficially and without permission, something went wrong and it had to be "hushed up," but he is still alive.
