The Pacific Coast rains liter ally answered the prayers of Central Oregon farmers. They got a 1.12 deluge in 12 hours. Nevada, Mo., was soaked by four inches of rain laced with heavy hail, while Tampa, Fla., got two inches of rain and Miami an inch and a half. Hough weather in the East also brought tragedy to Army maneuvers on the Virginia coast. An emphibious vehicle sank off Ft. Story and eight foot breakers swept three men to their deaths. Reports Exaggerated In Alaska, floods fell back and Air Force officials said reports that 100 villagers were trapped on a second-story roof were "exaggerated." Members of an Air Force res cue team flew to the village of Sleitmute and said they found the villagers on the ground floor of the building and in no immed iate danger. Evacuation was necessary at Aniak, farther down the flooded Kuskokwim, however. Three Air Force helicopters carried 18 persons, including 12 children, to high ground. Nat Add ! Estes Kefauver (D-Tenn.), says former President Harry Truman will - have a "great deal" to do with selecting a Democrat to run against Presi dent Eisenhower in the com ing elections. "Truman will be the most in fluential man at the Democrat ic national convention although not a delegate or candidate," Ke fauver said last night at a mass conference here. The determined candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination arrived in Califor nia yesterday to renew a vote- getting campaign for the state's June 5 primary. Kefauver tour ed the Los Angeles area and gave a major address here before flying to Santa Barbara, Calif., for more campaigning. Kefauver earlier in the day accused the administration of "makinjr deals" to settle anti trust actions instead of bring ing criminal charges under fed eral regulations. "What the Re publicans have done in anti-trust is to sit around the table with wrongdoing businessmen and make deals," he said. German PoIiceTo Guard Churchill Aachen, Germany (U.PJ City authorities announced today some 800 policemen equipped with fire hoses will guard Win ston Churchill against mob vio lence during his first postwar visit to Germany. The 81-year-old former prime minister, who is this year's win ner of Aachen's Charlemagne Prize for aid to European unity. arrives by air from Britain to day to receive the award. His visit has aroused strong protests, spearheaded by young nationalist hoodlums and ex pellees" from East Germany who charge Churchill bartered away their homes to the Communists at the fateful Yalta conference Crudely-painted signs saying "Churchill Not Wanted" and "Churchill Beat It" appeared on walls here over the week end, and the association of expellees has scheduled a protest meeting at the War Memorial here - to coincide with the award cere monies at City Hall Thursday. . Henry Ford II Quits As Foundation Head New York-rXU.R) Henry Ford II resigned Tuesday as chairman of the $2,500,000,000 Ford Foun dation - because his "duties and obligations as president of Ford Motor company" require full- time attention. The board of trustees an nounced immediately that H Rowan Gaither Jr., president -of the foundation had been elect ed to succeed Ford as chairman. "I think you all share with me the feeling that the growing work load of the board requires that the chairmanship - be held by some one able to spend full time on foundation affairs," Ford wrote in his letter of resig nation to foundation trustees. He said - he would remain a member of the board and will retain a keen interest in the work of the foundation. Gaither has been president of the foundation since February, 1953, and a member of the board of trustees since March, 1953. Great Eads to Present . Show at Applegate The Great Eads, magician and illusionist, will present, the "Show of a Thousand Wonders" at Applegate school at 8 p.m. Friday, May 11. Eads has been traveling the Pacific coast with his hour long program. According to Mrs. Ray Offenbacher, of the Applegate school, proceeds will go to the school hot lunch fund. Of all beverages,- coffee is the most popular in the world. And judging from the many letters I have received about this roast ed bean, a most productive source of hot arguments. One claims coffee keeps him awake, another that it aids slep; that coffee whets the appetite, that it quiets it; that coffee stimu lates brain action, that it slows it; that coffee quickens the heart beat, that it lowers it. Where does that leave us? Aft er conferring with doctors, uni versity professors, people in the coffee industry, and studying a report by Roger -' William Riis in Readers' Digest, here are my answers. Discount prejudice; I don't drink cof fe I prefer tea. "What percentage of the world's coffee is -consumed in the U.S.? Roughly, about half the world's production. And in 92 out of every 100 homes, it is a daily beverage with about 2i to ZVz cups consumed. What is the most important ingredient in coffee? The coffee bean is extremely complicated even chemists can not agree upon its analysis. But it is pretty well agreed that caf- f ein . is the most important in gredient. In different lots of coffee beans, it" may . vary as much as 250 per cent. How much caffein is there in, an average cup? About the same as two pinches of salt. Is it a stimulant? Yes, it stimulates brain, heart and. kidneys. A normal dose of heart stimulant is about the equivalent of what one would get by drinking three cups of coffee at. the same time. What would be a fatal dose of caffein? Varies with persons. On the average the equivalent of what one would get from 100. cups taken simultaneously. There is no caffein fatality on record. Harmful to Some As a stimulant, how does it! compare with other foods, say tea, chocolate, cola? A cup of tea hag about 75 per cent as much stimulation; a 10 cent bar of sweet chocolate about 85 per cent; and a 8-ounce bottle of cola about 60 pec cent as much. Is coffee harmful to some people? Yes. Among a hundred who drink coffee, to about 97 it is harmless to three - out of the 100 it may give "burning of the stomach, "palpitation of the heart,'.; "headache," "skin eruptions,"' or add to their 'nervousness." This is just about the same proportion who would be 'bothered by milk, eggs or some fruit. Does coffee keep one awake? In one investigation, it was shown that whenever a per son believed that coffee would keep him awake, even by very small' amounts, he would be kept-awake. However, an habit ual coffee drinker might - fall asleep directly after drinking a larger black cupful. In another study, large doses of caffein did not impair the sleep of the sub ject unless the individual was worried or concerned over something before he took the dose. 'Decaffeinated' Brands ' - What about "decaffeinated" brands of coffee? Are they bet ter to drink before going to sleep? - In the first place there is no such thing as pure decafffeina- tion about three per cent caf fein 1 remains in the coffee. Tests indicate that few people can. actually tell the difference between these "decaffeinated" Film Actress Must List Cruelty Charges Hollywood U.R) Actress Jeanne Crain's estranged hus band, Paul Brinkman, has filed a demurrer to her. pending di vorce suit to force her to give details of her cruelty charges.
