Newspaper Page Text1 Yanks Whip Chicago In Pair To Up Lead; Cincinnatians Climb By FRED DOWN United Press Sports Writer The New York Yankees are up to an old trick that pays off in pennants they're knocking off the key contenders them selves. The Yankees, who claim they started the "do it yourself" fad 20 years ago, showed the season's largest crowd yesterday why they're the perennial American League champions by handing the Chicago White Sox a pair of 4-0 setbacks. In the process, the Yankees extended their first-place lead to 2Vi games and the White Sox' string of scoreless innings to 20. It was the first meeting of the season between the flag riv als and the 49,016 fans saw the Yankees completely outclass the White So Earlier in the season, the Yankees took four of five games from the pennant-minded Boston Red Sox and now they're pointing for the Cleveland In dians. Ed (Whitey) Ford breezed to his fourth straight victory in the first game and then south paw Rip Coleman and veteran relief specialist Jim Konstanty collaborated in another eight-hit performance in the nightcap. The shutouts were the first by Yankee pitchers this year. B.rra's 8th Homer Yogi Berra hit his eighth hom er and Hank Bauer his sixth to spark the Yankees' 12-hit attack in the first game while short stop Gil McDougald walloped a key second-inning triple in the second game. Jack Harsh man and Harry Byrd suffered the defeats for the White Sox, who have lost five of their last six games to drop back to the .500 mark. The Kansas City Athletics pounded out 29 hits to beat the Washington Senators, 10-7 and 13-3, and the Baltimore Orioles downed the Detroit Tigers, 6-2 and 4-3, in other AL games. Cleveland at Boston was rained out. In the National league, those hard-hitting Cincinnati Redlegs climbed to within 20 points of first place when they clubbed the Philadelphia Phillies, 10-2 and 11-9. The Redlegs hit five round trippers Sunday, Ted Kluszew ski and Gus Bell homering in each game and Frank Robinson walloping a homer, triple and double in the first game. Bailey Met By Throng At Eugene j Eugene U.R) More than j 2,000 persons braved a driving ram last night to welcome Jim Bailey, the University of Oregon junior from Australia, who as tonished the sports world Satur day by beating John Landy in the fastest mile ever run on U.S. soil. Bailey's time was 3:58.6. He was just ahead of his fellow countryman who finished in 3:58.7. The 26-year-old Bailey wasted little time in pomp and cere mony. Both he and teammate Bill Dellinger worked out in Los Angeles yesterday in prepara tion for the Northern division meet next week in Eugene. Bai ley will run the 880 and mile and Dellinger the mile and two- mile. "I just ran the best I knew how and it turned out that way," Bailey said. San Francisco U.R) John Landy, who has cracked the mil ers' four minute barrier five times in his sparkling career, expects to do it again this week at the Fresno Relays and will be "awfully surprised" if he doesn't. "If I could do it in Los Ange les in 3:58.7 last Saturday why shouldn't I do it again at Fres no?" the candid schoolmaster from Australia asked. "It's not that I feel as if I were at a oeak or anything like that. But when you go under four minutes one week it seems possible that you can do it the next." The Landy-Bailey duel over shadowed other track events in the Far West last week end, but for the record, here are results of some of the more important meets: USC downed UCLA 74-65 in the meet highlighted by the Landy-Bailey race. Stinette To By-Pass Oregon Shrine Football Portland (U.R) Bruce Rid inger, standout football perform er for Albany high school last year, has been named to replace Jim Stinette of Corvallis on the 1956 State team in the annual Shrine all-star football game. Ridinger was the number 1 alternate named when coaches picked the squads earlier this year. Stinette will bypass the all-star game to play in the All American high school game in the East. Monday.
