TIornbrook' PTA Officers Installed By MRS. H. H. CHAPMAN Hornbrook At the regular meeting of the PTA Thursday evening at the school house, the officers for the next year were Installed. Mrs. Everett Barr of Yreka, the first vice-president of the 25th district of the Cali fornia PTA, was Installing offi cer. Those taking office were, president, Mrs. Alec Rutledge; vice president, Jack Cross; sec retary, Mrs. Tom Watt Jr.; treasurer, Mrs. Lauran Payne; parliamentarian, Mrs. Ed Smith, and historian, Mrs. Elsie Hogan. After the installation, W. E. Roberts, Siskiyou county school superintendent, spoke on the bond issue for the proposed addi tion to the local school building. Hostesses for the evening were Mrs. Elsie Hogan, Mrs. Nelda Rue, Mrs. Ethel White, Mrs. Robert Farmer, and Mrs. Daniel Metzen. Mrs. Ruth Cummins, primary grades teacher in the grammar school, left Thursday for San Francisco where she is to under go surgery. Mrs. Alec Rutledge will substitute for her during the remainder of the school term. Mrs. W. H. Farmer gave a birthday party May 4 for her two sons, Danny, 9, and Billy, 8. Helping the boys to celebrate were Douglas and Benjamin Bennett, Marilyn and Jimmy Doolittle, Darrel Jones, Spike and Jimmy Maynard, Danny Thompson, Steve, Dale and Gene Farmer, Danny Metzen, Tommy Collister, Jackie Skeahan, and Mrs. Frank Lowe, all of Horn brook, and Susie, Lisa, and Amy Lebate, and their mother Mrs. Norma Lebate of Yreka, and Mrs. Lebate's mother, Mrs. Frank Kassik of Bogus. Each guest received a prize, and after playing games, they were served refreshments of ice cream and cake. ' We have been asked to make a correction to an item appear ing in the Hornbrook column of the Mail Tribune for May 3 concerning the reorganization of the fire department. The correct notice should read as follows: "For those responding to the fire alarms, the location of the fire may be determined by the following: 1 blast Henley Way vicinity. 2 blasts Center of town (old Highway 99). 3 blasts Anything across the tracks." Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Cum mins have received word that their son, A3c Raymond Mof fett, is now stationed near Rome, Italy, at an aircraft control and warning site. AB Frank Fick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Chapman, has completed his basic training, and has been transferred to Amar illo Air Force base, Texas, where he is to take training in jet engine mechanics. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Williams and family have moved into the house across the road from the Methodist church. Moving into the house ' vacated by the Wil liams' will be Mr. and Mrs. Rubin who operate the Henley Way cafe. Spring is "bustin out all over" the valley. The soft, warm rains and cloudy days have caused the farmers to beam with anticipation of good hay and grain crops, and the Older Girls (with apologies to Arthur Perry's Smudge Pot), to squeal with joy over the appearance of each new young blade that shows up in their garden. Police Warn Children About Blasting Caps Charles Champlin today cau tioned children to avoid touch ing blasting caps they might find in the area. Blasting caps are small, me tallic cylinders about as big around as a pencil and from one to 5V4 inches long, he said. A cap may or may not have a fuse attached, he said. Some are bright aluminum or copper with plain or colored wires at one end. All are charged with sensi tive explosives that can be set off by careless handling, shock or heat, he explained. The caps are used in a variety of excavation projects and when they explode, bits of metal fly in all directions. Champlin said the sharp fragments can cripple or blind o child, or in extreme cases, cause death. The police chief also cautioned adult users of blasting caps to carefully account for every one. Otherwise, he said, a mislaid cap may maim or kill some youngster. a cabeer WORTH ' INVESTIGATING IN THE GROWING J. J. NEWBERRY CO. Tennyson A high official of the princi pality of Monaco recently said, "American women are always awed by European nobility." Not always. There have been some notable exceptions. When Lillian Russell then known as "The American Beauty" visited Ber lin she was pursued by the Crown Prince Wilhelm. He never caught up with her. On one oc casion the prince sent a message to Lillian at her hotel asking her to go riding in the Tiergarten the next morning at eight o'clock. Lillian said to the bearer of the message, an army officer: "You tell the Crown Prince that I wouldnjt get up at eight in the morning to see Washington cross the Delaware." Asking Queries from clients. Q One of Irving Berlin's first hit songs was about a barber who bet his shop on Dorando, the great Ital ian long distance runner. What race was that? A That was a match race with Johnny Hayes, who had won the Olympic mar athon that same year, 1908. Was held in the old Madison Square Garden. Distance was 25 miles. Dorando won. However, in a similar race held shortly after, Dorando was defeated by the remarkable Indian runner Tom Longboat. Alimony Over 2,500,000 women are col lecting regular alimony checks in this country. Most of them keep on collecting alimony from the first husband after they have acquired a second husband. Only three states provide for discon tinuance of alimony when a woman marries again. Backwards Who started the idea of spell ing a notel, firm or brand name backwards? I believe it was a man named Holmes who owned the Semloh Hotel in Salt Lake City. Incidentally, when I first saw the sign of the Sal Sagev Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev., I thought for a moment it had been named after some girl of Uie Old West named Sal. I didn't realize offhand it was Las Vegas spelled backwards. By the way, in Beverly Hills, Calif., there is a haberdashery bearing the name "Yvel." That is Levy spelled backwards. It's a fact. Among the Married Olivia De Haviland expects the first child of her second mar riage to arrive on her 40th birth day which is July 1 of this year. This brings to mind Olivia once told the childless Queen Soraya of Persia what she believes to be an infallible Way of having children. This calls for taking the volcanic baths at Ischia, Italy. It is said that after taking these baths many women who had - been childless for years have had blessed events shortly after. Pasing By Erie Stanley Gardner. Highly prolific author of detective mys tery stories. He is the originator of one of my favorite detective story titles namely: "The Case of the Restless Redhead." How ever, the detective tale bearing my top favorite title still is, "The Corpse in the Derby Hat" by Harold Swiggett. Knitting Is your charming matrimonial mate a knitting expert? How quickly can she knit a pair of socks for you? Ask her what she thinks of the possibility of knit ting a pair of men's socks in 35 minutes. It is claimed this can be done by a home knitting ma chine that knits at the rate of 30 rows and 5,000 stitches a minute. Zodiac Club Ever hear of a Zodiac club? One made up of women born under the same sign. New York er says she belongs to a Scorpio club and adds I may be invited to their next dance. Very nice, Still, should I go? Have aU those Scorpio women who threatened to slap my face forgiven me? How about that red-haired Scor- pian who expressed a desire to slap my face on both sides and add a kick in the pants? She lives in Manhattan. I must find out if she belongs to that club before I go to the dance. McLEOD Youth on European Tour By CAROLINE L.
