Newspaper Page TextMed Treasure ! Elgin Cutlass Pistol Has Built-in Bayonet We had almost reached the gunsmith's door when an angry looking individual popped out of it and started to hurry past. "That's a murderous looking knife you've got there, friend," aid Fred. "Want to sell it?" "I sure do," the man said, coming to an abrupt halt. "But Its more than a knife if you want to buy it." He held the weapon out for us to see. It was a combination knife and pistol, the cutlass shaped blade being attached to the underside of the pistol bar rel. "Why it's a cutlass pistol," aid Fred. After he had studied the piece for maybe five minutes, Fred handed it to me and asked the owner how much he wanted. "How much will you give?" the little man asked. I gave the weapon a thorough crutiny as they talked. It was a BEN FRANKLIN REJECT A HIGH PRICED STAMP From his coat pocket, Larry produced a brown manila enve lope. He opened it and removed one-cent stamped envelope. Because the bust on the stamp was of Benjamin Franklin, I could see at a glance the' item was probably a product of the 1890s or thereabouts. I scanned the piece closely. There was nothing I could recall about It that made it at all out standing. The stamp was blue against the white background of the cover. He not only goes riding on special excursions over little used lines, but he's got a basement full of model trains and tracks. Under the circumstances, it was only natural that I should tell him of a find another friend of mine, Charlie Hanna, had made a map. "It's just a map of the route of the old New Orleans, Ope lousas and Great Western rail road," I told him. Charlie was delighted to show the map, of course. It was dou ble folio size and in this case proved to be about 35 by 24 Inches. Furthermore,' it had been hand colored, and whoever did it had turned in a pretty good job. Ted spread the map on the ta ble and studied it carefully, go ing over it inch by inch. The legend especially interested him. It said the map had been litho graphed by D. He had bought it from a distant cousin of his who had been thinking, of all things, of cutting it up so it could be made into a lampshade. Charlie had paid $20 for it and didn't particularly want to sell. Ted, however, was anxious to buy, finally offering $60 for it. That did it; the map changed hands. It took some time for me to find out what the map was real ly worth, and when I finally did establish that it had sold in re cent years for $105 and $115, Ted wasn't especially interested.
