May 4, 19SS Miss Huson May Queen At University Miss Margaret Huson of Med ford has been named May Queen at Willamette university, and is reijzing over the May weekend iestivities May 4-6, a university release announces A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell E. Huson, 45 Lindley street, the queen, is a senior music major and member of Del ta Gamma sorority. Miss Huson has served as president of Mu Phi Epsilon, national music fra ternity, and Associated Women Students. She' was song leader for Delta Gamma and president of the orchestra, and treasurer of Unesco and the junior class, Miss Huson was winner of an Elks Lumber company scholar ship to Willamette university. Members of the May Queen Washington PTA Hears Program By School Band Washington school band en tertained at the last meeting of Washington Parent-Teacher as sociation. Under the direction of I. A. Mirick, they presented a program of waltzes, marches and polkas including "The School Grade Polka," composed by Mr. Mirick especially for children from the fourth to sixth grade. Thanks was extended to Mr. Mirick by Robert Sage, prin cipal, and he was commended for the work he has done with the band. Dr. Witter from the Oregon State Board of Health spoke on the results of the recent dental survey taken in the state of Ore gon. Colored slides were shown to depict some of the actual cases found during the survey. Dr. Witter then answered ques tions pertaining to dental health. The meeting opened with the flag presentation by Joan Holmes, Donna Johnson, Sher ril Linn, and Judy Cofman, members of Mrs. Cooksey's Girl Scout troop. Mrs. Norman Keathamer reading of the PTA Prayer. Room count was won by two rooms, Mrs. Ford's first grade and Mrs. Collens fifth grade were tied for the honor. During the business portion of the meeting presided over by Mrs. Ray Alder, president, it was voted to use the funds raised during the year for a tape recorder, a stapler or a wick pen for each teacher for use in her room, coffee cups for PTA use, $100 to be put into the li brary fund with $25 of that amount for the purchase of rec ords. It was announced that May 11, was the date for a musical program to be presented by the fourth, fifth and sixth grades at 7:30 p.m. in the school gymna sium. Refreshments were served by mothers of pupils in the fifth grade and child care was pro vided by Mrs. Herbert Gifford's Camp Fire Girls. The coronation at four o'clock will be followed by an all-school barbecue and a presentation of the musical comedy, " Kiss Me Kate" and the evening will close with a reception for students. alumni and guests. Mr. and Mrs. Huson and their youngest daughter, Darelyn, are Salem today to attend the coronation ceremony for their daughter." Queen Margaret's vounger sister, Miss Laura Mae Huson, is a junior student at the college. Miss Laura Mae Huson's fiance, Douglas Wall, also a stu dent at the school, will serve as Queen Margaret's escort this aft- Shirtwaist Classic I T Dinner Honors Howard Pierce Employees of the Central Point branch of the First Na tional bank of Portland spon sored a dinner last evening which honored Howard" Pierce, assistant manager and personnel manager and Mrs Pierce. Mr, Pierce is being transferred to the main office in Portland. The dinner was held at Omar's in Ashland. Present were Rich ard Isaacs, manager of the branch, and Mrs. Isaacs, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hueners, Medford, Mr. and Mrs. William Nelson, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Roberts, Mr, and Mrs. Clifford Shafer, all Central Point, Miss Lucille Abbott, Sams Valley, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ad ams. Medford. Mr. Pierce was presented a gift from the employees of the bank. Mr. Hueners is to replace Mr, Pierce at the bank. Mr. Pierce will leave Sunday eve ning for Portland while Mrs. Pierce and their sons, Larry, 12, and Ricky, 10, will remain here until after the close of school. New Swim Class Announced at Y With warmer weather coming to the Rogue valley, swimming classes at the Medford YMCA are in full swing, the Y reports. Latest class to be announced by the Y for valley homemakers is the morning swimming class, open to both the beginner and the woman who feels she needs to develop more confidence in her ability to swim in deep water. This latest class will begin Tuesday, May 8, at 10 a.m., and will run each Tuesday and Thursday thereafter for eight sessions. Those interested in at tending the class should register by calling the Y, 2-6295. or by being present for the Tuesday class. Council for Blind To Hold Election Officers for the coming year will be elected at a meeting of Jackson County chapter, Asso ciated Council of the Blind, Sunday, May 6. It will be held at 2 p.m. in St. Mark's Guild hall, corner of Fifth street and Oakdale avenue. Members and friends are ask ed to note the change of date. It is stated that since Mothers' day falls on the regular meeting date of the chapter, the change to one week earlier was found advisable. In addition to election, mem bers will complete plans for the annual white cane sale. In Pullman Mrs. S. E. Philips, Big Boulder orchards, plans to be in Pull man, Wash., this week end to visit her son, Douglas Philips, a student at Washington State col lege, and to attend Mothers' week end events there. Former Medford Actress Playing Role in Portland Dolores Gottfried Berg, for merly of Medford, ' makes her Portland stage debut tonight in the Grace Kelly role of "Mar- got" in the Portland Civic thea ter's production of "Dial 'M' for Murder." In 1954 Mrs. Berg played the leading role of "Daisy" in the Medford Footlighters play "Lo and Behold." She was a member of the 1953 Shakespeare Festi val company in Ashland, a mem ber of the Tudor Guild's board of directors, and was the first copy writer at radio station KBOY. Mrs. Berg is now em ployed in the program and con tinuity departments of Port lands CBS radio affiliate, station KOIN. Following successful runs in London and New York's Broad way, Frederick Knott's "Dial 'M' for Murder" was made into a movie by Alfred Hitchcock. Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings played the leading roles in the film ver sion. The suspense - laden murder mystery will be presented on the main stage of the Portland Civic theater May 4 through May 19. Carl Ritchie, a member of the 1950 Shakespeare Festival cast and long-time Festival support er, is displaying fourteen opaque water color set designs in the main lobby of the theater during the run of the play. Mr. Ritchie is teaching speech at Willamette university and works at radio station KSLM in Salem. He is an actor-director with Salem's very successful "In-the-round-theater," the Pen tacle."
