QUIGG United Press Correspondent New York (U.R) You may have noticed that the secretary of commerce has eased trade re strictions on bust supporters and various other non-strategic items for export to the Soviet Euro pean bloc. Did you say non-strategic, Mr. Secretary? Well, I guess it depends on what kind of strategy you're talking about. But usage of the word seemed a mite shocking in view of the fine and indispen sable products more than 700 of them listed by the Com merce Department. No Export License Exporters now may ship these items behind the European Iron Curtain without obtaining an ex port license for each shipment. A blow has been struck against the cold war. How the Euro pean C o m m y countries have done without these modern civ ilized delights for years is a sub ject for deep ponder. But they must have led empty lives. Consider the following items culled from the secretary's list: Edible molasses, bust support ers, ear pads, eye guards, hoof pads, masks and false faces, drays and trailers, motor scoot ers, Easter egg colors, castor oil, and corn plasters. Hat- finishing powder, .silk stocking savers in tablet form, magic lantern parts, squeegees, cuspidors and cuspidor bowls, denture trimmers, cigar ribbons, baby pants, zippers, bar equip ment, and coin-operated ma chines. Cream of Culture Obviously we're sending them the cream of our industrial cul ture. But the thought occurs that they really should get more than the curds of our whey of life. U.R) The pound keeper is a thing of the past as far as this western Mas sachusetts town is concerned. For the first time since any one can remember, the office wasn't listed during Blandford's most recent town election. The office " of pound keeper oirginally was started so "lost, strayed' or otherwise animals" could be picked up and kept for the owners. Blandford's first pound was a log-cabin affair, but they had their troubles there. An ox once corraled there went beserk after a mad dog bit him and made a shambles of the pound. Let's ship them some of our villains. I'm thinking particularly- of probably the most mon strous oaf abroad today: The guy who makes the TV and radio commercials with the sound so much louder than the entertain ment part of the program that it wakens babies, sets dogs howling, and bounces neighbors out of bed. Mutiplexing is the process of "scrambling" a number of radio signals or messages, sending them simultaneously on the same channel, and "unscram bling" them at the receiving end. It can be applied to voice, teletype, telegraph or any other type or combination of radio signals. The system, which will op erate over a series of microwave radio relay towers, will provide more than 30 circuits for voice communication, t e 1 e m e tering and load frequency control, pro viding centralized control over nearly two million horsepower Recording Joined By Symphony Group Boston (U.R) A recording commemorating the- 75th anni versary season of the Boston Symphony Orchestra features the group playing the same piece under the batons of three con ductors. Three recordings of Berlioz' "Hungarian March" made over a period of nearly half a cen tury were dubbed together elec tronically to sound as one con tinuous performance. Karl Muck, who became con ductor in 1906, starts the march. After all, newspaper adver tisements don't shout any louder than the news headlines, and they're doing okey. Also, they have more than one use. As Fred Allen once remarked, you can't line the bottom of a canary cage with a radio. If all the excess, useless sound from these commercials could be collected, we'd have a fine stockpile from which to hurl back noise at Communist diplo mats when they begin sounding off, against us.
