Barkley in Foundry Methodist Church in Washington. President Eisenhower led a throng of notables and just plain folks who attended. Gordon Klop Named To Portland Office Gordon H. Klop, chief clerk, district freight and passenger of fice for Southern Pacific in Med ford, has been promoted to chief clerk in the Portland district freight office and assumed duties there Monday, Robert Holmes, Medford district freight and pas senger agent, has announced. Dan L. Kidd of Eugene has been appointed to chief clerk here replacing Klop, who has served here since March 1, 1955. Klop, a specialist in freight tariffs, is a graduate of the Uni versity of Oregon, where he ma jored in railroad transportation and interstate commerce law. Kidd, who has several years railroad experience, his wife, Joan, and son, Kenneth, live at 828 West 14th st., Medford. Railroad employees from this area Monday honored Fred Morris, who retired after 43 years service with the company. Employees contributed funds to purchase and present Morris a desk as a gift recognizing his service. The Community's Biggest Marketplace Oxidizer Fails To Blast Rocket Info Ionosphere White Sands Proving Grounds, N.M. (U.R) The failure of an oxidizer to trigger the powerful motor of the Navy's Aerobee-HI rocket was blamed today for the rocket's failure to blast 185 miles into the ionosphere. In stead, it fizzled out at 10,000 feet and crashed to earth. Navy officers said privately that they were bitterly disap pointed by the fiasco, which fol lowed a big advance buildup. The occasion was a test late Wednesday at which the first production model of the Aero bee was fired at White Sands. The test had been put off once because of high winds. The Navy will try again Tuesday. Three more tests are scheduled here and another one is planned at Fort Churchill, along Hudson's Bay in Canada. When the rocket was fired Wednesday it climbed to about 10,000 feet being powered by ARTICLES FILED Salem (U.R) Articles of incorporation were filed here yesterday for the Medford-John-son truck lines of Medford. They were signed by Edna H. Stoehr, B. L. Wood and J. B. Keeble. Athol, Mass. (U.R) J. C. Hill, 80, who became a newspaper man in 1896, figures he has walk ed more than 30,000 miles while covering his beat for the Athol Daily News. a booster that functioned like jet-assisted takeoff (JATO) for aircraft. The rocket started at a 142-foot tower. But the big engine never got a chance to perform. When the booster fell away, the rocket came down. It tore a hole 15 feet across and 10 feet deep in the hard desert and sent a tower of dirty orange smoke high into the air. Chief Gunner's Mate A. D. Deaver, in charge of the project, said the disappointing showing was caused by an "oxidizer cut off." The Navy had hoped to use the rocket to gather information in the ionosphere for the Inter national Geophysical Year in 1957 and 1958. Truman Expected Among the mourners expected Paducah, Ky. (U.R) A fun eral train today carried the body of Sen. Alben W. Barkley. to its final resting place in the soil of the Kentucky he loved and served through more than half a century of public life to his death at 78. The 10-car train, carrying also his wife and immediate family and more than a score of his colleagues in the Senate from Washington, paused briefly at Louisville before rolling west ward to his old home town on the Ohio river. B47 Plane Crash Kills Four Men Lincoln, Neb. (U.R) A six jet B47 crashed in flames and exploded on a farm last night, killing all four men aboard. The plane went down without warning at 10:38 p.m. (CST). The Lincoln Air Force Base, a Strategic Air Command installa tion only three and a half miles southeast of the crash site, was in radio contact with the plane at the time. Air force officials said the pilot gave no hint that anything was wrong. The big jet was carrying live ammunition, which exploded and sprayed hunks of flaming metal over a wide area. Only the tail section remained intact. An Air Force investa gating crew went immediately to the scene and the area was blocked off to outsiders over a two square mile area. Air Force officials confirmed the four-man crew had been killed. The victims were iden tified as Capt. Marion J. Perdue, commander of the plane, San Antonio, Tex.; Capt. Charles H. Stozesifer, Maricopa, Calif.; and Staff Sgt. William F. Rockholt, Fellows, Calif. The co-pilot was not immediately identified. Detail To Meet Train A 24-man honor guard from the local Kentucky National Guard company was detailed to meet the train and escort the Manila bronze casket from the railroad station to the Harris Funeral Chapel 10 blocks away. There the casket was to be opened briefly while Barkley's friends and. neighbors which included a large portion of Pa ducah's 30,000 population filed past to pay their last respects. These . old friends, some of whom still called him Judge Barkley in remembrance of his first political 'office as county MOURNING Mrs. Alben W. Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, Sen. Stuart Symington of Mis souri, Sen. Lyndon Johnson of Texas, Gov. Averell Harriman of New York, and former Gov. Adlai Stevenson of Illinois. Ste venson Is a distant cousin ot Barkley. Also present were his sena torial colleague from Kentucky, Earle C. Clements, and Ken tucky Gov. A. B.
