Barkley's Colorful Political Career Contained Frustration By LYLE C. WILSON United Press Correspondent Washington (U.R There'll be rousing political meeting somewhere along about now with A 1 b e n William Bark ley up there on the plat form doing his stuff to the a s s e m b 1 y's Rebel yells. And, as the servant of the Lord which he c wuioa hoped to be, Barkley will serve up some hearty laughs for all hands pres ent. It was his belief that a good laugh was appropriate in any company. Those who knew Barkley well will believe he was not long in resuming that speech o sadly interrupted in Lexington, Va., Monday evening. Yet, with all the charm and laughter that marked Barkley through a politician's well rewarded life, the big Kentuck lan was a frustrated man. He wanted to be president. Elected in 1912 Taft was president, the Ti- , tame had been only a few months sunkwhen Barkley first ' was elected to Congress back in 1912. The Senate followed and in July, 1937, came Barkley's first big break. In the contest to elect a Democratic Senate lead er following the death of Arkan sas' Joseph T. Robinson, FDR intervened with a public letter which began, "Dear Alben." That was enough for wavering Democrats. Barkley won by a one-vote margin over the late Pat Harrison of Mississippi. That triumph sent Barkley twice in pursuit of the vice pres idential nomination, always in happy confidence that he had from Mr. Roosevelt a green light for that ambition. But in 1940 and again in 1944 Barkley's green light flickered out before the balloting, as it did for a con' siderable number of others who had believed FDR's friendly in terest meant what he seemed to say. At one of those disappoint ing conventions, Barkley decid ed to refuse to deliver a sched- uled keynote speech on grounds that Mr. Rosevclt had double crossed him. But he changed his mind in time and paid great tribute to the President. Bark ley was a team man. His lone rebellion was in Feb ruary, 1944. FDR had vetoed in searing language a victory tax bill which Barkeey and others let LONG DISTANCE family and friends close to you typical low rates from Med ford Bottom . $2.00 Chicago 1.75 Salt Lake City 1.05 Sti .85 St to staboe rtftt, sot toocftnf Ik. tor mmtn star ( p.. wetfcdtyi tmi a fey Stwday 6W a family rwrnbn tonight by Hhphonm Pacific Telephone had pushed through. FDR's hand-picked Senate leader took the floor, raging, red-faced and almost explosive. He called the veto message "a calculated and deliberate assault upon the leg islative integrity of every mem ber of Congress." "I do not intend to take this unjustifiable assault lying down," shouted Barkley, and promptly resigned his Senate leadership. By nightfall, Mr. Roosevelt was busy smoothing Barkley's feelings and the breach was patched too soon, some Democrats thought. Congress, however, overrode FDR's veto and Senate Demo crats unanimously reelected Barkley to the leadership. The high point of Barkley's life should have been in 1948-49 when, finally, he was nominated for vice president, and with for mer President Truman won an election which was counted lost. Happy congressional Democrats voted Barkley a S2.000 gold medal at public expense for his share in that victory and Mr. Truman got a salary hike along with a fat tax-free expense ac count. The man from Kentucky served the vice-presidency well and became the nation's sweet heart as a beloved "Veep." If you don't know, first blush for your ignorance and then call up the information bureau at the city hall and find out. The official flower of the beautiful borough of Brooklyn is the Forsythia. Keep that in mind. The next time you call on a Brooklyn girl bring her Forsy thias instead of Roses or Orchids. So They Say Grace Kelly was born under Scorpio (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) Scorpio is the strongest, sexiest and most subtle sign of the Zodiac. Fe males born under that sign have great personal magnetism and analytical minds. A Scorpian is a one man woman, mat is, one man ' at a time. However, if a man is boring, excessively domi nating or disloyal the Scorpio wife will quickly take steps to get rid of him. The Scorpio girls can hand out criticism but can't take it. Q. say the play titled, "The Jest," featuring John and Lionel Bar- rymore was a curtain raiser for t.tnel Barrymores starring ve hicle "Alice-Sit-By - The - Fire." Right? A. You are in error, sir. "The Jest", was a full length play featuring John and Libnel Ethel had nothing to do with it The curtain raiser for "Alice-Sit- By-The-Fire" was Barrie's "play "Pantaloon." John end Lionel were featured in it. Get It Right Note the luxury liners the Queen Mary and Queen Eliza beth referred to as "twin steam ships." That's wrong. Those boats differ in many respects. One of the major differences is that the Queen Elizabeth has stabilizers. The Queen Mary is not so equipped so when the seas are heavy the rock and roll is much greater on it than on the Queen Elizabeth. Hone And Women When it comes to figures, Mari lyn Monroe has more than any of the women who have achieved fame because of their shapes. Or so says her press agent. It is possible the claim may be justi fied. I note it said Marilyns measurements are 38-23-34-36 That's one more measurement than possessed by., any other streamlined beauty. Seems Miss Monroe has a "double hip" mea surement, a lower hip and an upper hip. The 34 is her upper hip measurement, the 36 that of her lower hip. Pleas Note How many drinks should be extracted from a fifth of whis key? How about a quart? One distiller says 17 drinks from, a fifth. Twenty-one trom a quart The Scotch say limit from a quart is 18 drinks. Still 17 from a fifth, 21 from a quart is gen erous enough. But where can be found a bar that follows such a policy. In the average bar,, the bartender is expected to get 25 drinks from a fifth.
