Dangerous for Children Dr. Edwards warned that the insecticides are particularly dan gerous for children who may ac cidently swallow or splash a lethal amount of the substances on the skin .while playing. He urged that all insecticides be kept in a locked cabinet out of reach of children when not in use. The health officer said that the following precautions should be observed when applying or ganic phosphorous insecticides: Always read the manufactur er's label carefully and follow directions; Wear protective garments in cluding plastic raincoat or cov eralls, a washable or disposable hat, natural rubber gloves which fit tightly at the wrist, rust proof goggles, clean work shoes or rubber boots and fresh cloth ing; Wear Respirator Wear a respirator recommend ed by the U.S. department of ag riculture for use against the par ticular organic phosphorous in secticides being used; Never stand .where insecti cides may drift on you or apply in such a manner as to permit such exposure for humans or livestock in the area; Wash all equipment, including the clothing and respirator, aft er use; Bathe promptly after each day's spraying or dusting; Do not work in orchards or similar areas sprayed or dusted with organic phosphorous insec ticides for at least seven days, after application; Always store insecticides in a tight properly-labeled container in a cool dry place out of the reach of children; , Always dispose of empty con tainers by burning or burying. Tells Early Symptoms ' Dr. Edwards said that early symptoms of organic phosphor ous poisoning include nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, ab dominal cramps, excessive sweating, salivation and con striction of pupils. If poisoning is suspected, call a physician immediately and get the patient to a hospital as soon as possible, he said. Give arti ficial respiration if the patient turns blue or stops breathing. If the. insecticide has been swal lowed and vomiting has not re sulted, induce vomiting by giv ing a strong soap solution or a tablespoon of salt dissolved in one-half glass of warm water and call a physician for further instructions. If the insecticide has come in to contact with the skin, imme diately remove all clothing and bathe the patient with plenty of soapy water, rinsing thoroughly afterwards, the health officer said. If the spray or dust gets into the eyes, wash them with flowing water for at least 15 minutes. Dr. "Edwards warned that re peated small exposure to organic phosphorous insecticides have additive affects and ultimately produce severe . illnesses or death, so small exposures should not be regarded lightly. He said that individuals who have been exposed to organic phosphorous should not allow themselves to be . reexposed until blood tests show that it is safe..
