Over the Pacific, with Japan Air Lines when a visitor is departing from Hawaii it is cus tomary tc present him with a garland of flowers called a lei. I have been loaded down with many, but intertwined with these leis are facts presented to me by Dick McMillan of the Visitors Bureau. He calls them, "the lei of the land." Such as: You might say, Hawaii was "discovered" three times. First by the Polynesians around 960 A.D.; next by the Spaniards who reputedly arrived around 1555; and last by Captain James 4-30-56 Cook of the Royal Navy, 1778, who named the group the Sand wich Islands after the Earl of Sandwich. Captain George Vancouver introduced cattle. On these King Kamehameha placed a "hands off" kapu and the herd multi plied quickly. Today, Hawaii has the second largest cattle ranch in the world. So lush is the rass and so drenched by dew that some of these Parker ranch cattle die without ever having had a drink of water. The Hawaiian islands are the summits of the loftiest moun tain range in the world. Before the history of mankind, a great 2000-mile rift opened on the floor of the Pacific Ocean. From it poured enough lava through the millions of years to build this mounted chain to a height of 30,000 feet from the ocean floor. The tallest peak in this range is Mauna Kea on Hawaii. Hawaii Largest of Islands Hawaii, the largest of the is lands, is not the capital. That honor goes to much smaller Oahu, with Honolulu as the cap ital city. Some of the peaks on Kauai and Maui islands are extremely old; others on the Big Island (Hawaii) are still being formed as periodic lava flows cascade down their slopes. Around most of these islands, myriads of tiny coral animals have built reefs. The Hawaiian archipelago is the longest in the world 1500 miles from Hawaii northwest to Kure (Ocean) island. The total area of these Haw aiian Islands is 6,435 square miles about the size of Dela ware, Connecticut and Rhode Is land rolled into one. The islands have year-round summer weather; with a mean monthly temperature in Hono lulu of 70 degrees in February; to 78 in August. Throughout the year, happily, fresh winds blow mostly tradewinds with an oc casional "kona" which usually brings rain. Rainfall varies tremendously in different parts of the same island: the greater rainfall is usually found on the windward side. In general, winter is the rainy season, although there is no month without some rain. Atop Mt. Waialeale, Kauai, the yearly rainfall often exceeds 350 inches on the leeward side, areas have less than 10 inches. Sugar and pineapple are the two main industries contrib uting about a quarter billion to Hawaii's economy. Other indus tries, besides "tourism," are clothing manufacturing, tuna fishing, woodworking, lauhala weaving, flower growing, glass etching, and not to be overlook ed the making of ukuleles and hula skirts. Most Spectacular Hawaii's two active volcanoes Mauna Loa and Kilauea are at once among the most spectac ular in the world and the most harmless. In addition, Hawaii has many dormant volcanoes. Punchbowl, within the city of Honolulu, was active perhaps 5,000 years ago. Another, Haleakala (house of the rising sun) is one of the largest dormant volcanoes in the world its highest point is 10,025 feet and it is 21 miles around the rim. The islands are unbelievably rich in colorful flowers, plants and trees. There are more than 460 kinds of ornamental trees the most dramatic perhaps be ing the shower trees; more than 5,000 hybrid hibiscus shrubs alone; and on the island of Ha waii, more than 400,000 acres of tree ferns some of which grow to heights of 25-30 feet. Yet despite this seeming profu sion of plants, few are native. Most of the flora, from weeds to huge banyan trees, were brought into the territory. England (U.R) Two persons were killed when a Brit ish troop-carrying plane crashed on takeoff with 54 persons aboard today. Four survivors were trarmed inside the smashed fuselage for two hours as fire threatened to break out while rescuers worked feverishly to free them. The rescuers finallv cut their way through the crumpled met- alwork of the plane and pulled the four survivors to safety in a tense, drama-filled operation. The four persons traDDed in side while jittery firemen ringed the wreckage, suffered iniuries. But the other 48 persons aboard the four-engined York airliner, which was bound for Cyprus by way of Malta with British serv icemen and their families! es caped injury with the aid of seats which faced rearward. They were able to climb out of the fuselage on their own. But it was in a section of the passenger compartment which was crushed by the impact that the rescue drama took place.
