Friday in the only Jackson County B League baseball fray played. St. Mary's scheduled action at Jacksonville and Talent's trip to Rogue River were postponed be cause of wet grounds. Both of the skipped conflicts will be made up on May 8. The Cougars went into sec ond place in the loop alone as the result of the single battle. Don Vannice threw a five-inning one-hitter for the Prospect nine. He struck out 12 batters and walked just one. Bill Irwin, the Logger chuclcr, got Butte Falls' single safety. Steve Hoag with three for three, Bob Jones with three for four, Vannice with two for three, Allen Valentine with two for four and Jim Daniels with a homerun were the heavy hit ters for the Cougars. Irwin fanned two and walked two long with giving up 12 hits. Prospect will be host to Jack sonville here on Thursday. The ti': was moved up from the reg ular Friday date because of a conflict. McLoughlin Triumphs in Triangular McLoughlin' junior high grad ers of Medford chalked up a crushing victory Friday in a triangular track and field en counter with Ashland. The Bulldog runners, jumpers and throwers ran up a 102-score. Ashland was second with 30Vz points, f Crater's freshmen col lected 19. Eleven of the 14 first places in the meet went to the thin clad performers of Medford. Ashlanders picked up the other first places. McLoughlin runners finished one-two in seven of the events. Terry Hamilton was a triple winner for the Bulldogs. He won both hurdle events and the high jump. Ron Reich was a double winner in the 330 and 660-yard runs. Other victors for McLoughlin were Rolland Holbrook in the 75-yard dash; Roger Johnson in the three-fourths mile; Gerry Lyons in the 150; John Con nolly in the discus and Ricky Sheffers in the vault. The Med ford combination of Fred Fun ston, Holbrook, Hamilton and Lyons took the relay. Kizer won the shot put for Ashland and other firsts for the Grizzly Cubs were McGinnis in the javelin and Woodell in the broad jump. Pairings were completed Fri day night after a drawing to team high and low handicap pers. There are 128 entries or 64 teams entered. First round will be completed next Sunday evening with the losers to drap into the first flight. George Harrington' and Ray Wise won in 1955. Harrington is not entered this year and Wise is teamed with Morris Leonard Sr. AHS Natters Tip Medford Ashland high bounced Med ford 4 to 3 in tennis competition at Ashland Friday. The Lith ians won three of the singles tiffs and split the doubles. Scoring victories for Medford were Bill Isaacs 3-6, 8-6, 6-4, over Dave Woods and Chuck Finch, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 over Rich ard Green. Isaacs and Dick Wayburn, Medford, tripped Woods and Green 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in doubles. Ashland winners were Jerry Joy, 6-1, 6-1 over Wayburn; Dean Marsh 6-1, 6-1 over Roger Cooley; Gary Holman, 6-1, 6-1 over Jim Pletsch, and Joy and Mason 6-1, 6-2 over Cooley and Finch. The Medford netters may go to Klamath Falls on Wednes day. They travel to Roseburg on Saturday. ' Backlund Heads County Coaches Art Backlund, Butte Falls, has been named president of the Jackson County B league Coach es association. He succeeds Wes Stauffer, Prospect. ' George Bray, Talent, was named to succeed Fred Richard son, Jacksonville, as treasurer. The coaches announced plans for a league basketball tourney in 1957 at the end of the regu lar season. If the tourney win ner is different from the regular loop victor, the two clubs will vie in a one-game playoff for the right to compete against the Klamath county winner for the District 5B championship. 2ND IN OWN RACE Laurel, Md. (U.R) Willie Hartack, the nation's leading jockey last year with 417 vic tories, celebrated his "day" in fine fashion Friday at Laurel Park. He booted home three winners, but finished second in the featured race named after him. Honolulu (U.R)- Officials of the task force which will stage this year's nuclar tests in the Pacific said indications are that the program will start as sched ule dvvith a "public" H-bomb shot around May 8. Jim Bailey Sets Record AsUO Wins Seattle (U.R) Oregon's NCAA mile champion Jim Bail ey set a new meet record today in leading the Ducks to a 70V4 59M victory over Washington in a Pacific Coast conference dual track meet. Bailey ran the mile in 4:11.7. He also won the half mile race in the time of 1:53.48. Oregon's strength in the mile, 440, 100 yard dash, 880 and the broad jump meant the differ ence in today's meet. Arden Christensen won the 440 in 51.7; Jack Morris took the 100 yard dash in 10 seconds flat and Martin Pedigo, who took but one jump because of an injured leg, won the broad jump with a leap of 23'3V4". Other Washington winners were Dean Singer, who ran the 120 yard high hurdles in 15.2, tied for first in the high jump at 6'1" with teammate Bob Bry an and finished in a dead heat with Morris of Oregon in the 220 low hurdles in 25.7; Jim Hilton, who topped the pole vaulters at 13' and Mel Kobel, who won the 220 yard dash in 22.4. 1 Washington's mile relay team of John Davis, Carl Mahnken, Dick McKimson and Dave . Rook Links Five Winner Oregon State college Rook golfers defeated Medford high Vi to 5Vfc and Southr Oeen 9 9Vi to 5V2 Friday and Southern Oregon college 14V to V4 Sat urday in matches on the Rogue Valley Country club and Oak Knoll courses. Against Medford the Rooks won three of -the five individual contests. They won all five at Ashland. Larry Copple, OSC and ex Medford high player, was med alist both days. He had a 77 in his match with Jim Materie, Medford, and a 76 against his Red Raider foe. Tom Hamlin, Medford high, was second low for the Friday match with a 79. Ken Leonard of the Rooks had a 77 yesterday. In the match at Rogue Valley Hamlin defeated Leighton Tut tle, OSC, (80) 3 to 0; Dick Cop ple, Medford, (82) defeated Leo nord (85); Mike Geyer, OSC, (80) defeated Gary Harrington (85); Larry Copple defeated Ma terie (89) 3 to 0, and Warren Deakins, OSC, (80) defeated Bill Foote 3 to 0.
