' "There's really nothing heah," she said, speaking with "a's" so broad they must have been flat tened in a press, "but I suppose we have to help out." The woman with her looked down at the glassware spread before them on the table. It was just the usual assort ment of odds and ends found in a charity bazaar, -but suddenly the companion leaned forward and picked up an oblong-shaped glass dish, one of the covered kind. It was blue in color, and the design on it, now that I no ticed .it, was of the "horn of plenty" type, consisting of corn ucopias with alternately checked mouths and sides. "I think thafs rather pretty," said the companion, "and it's only S5." But she put it back. A man moved swiftly forward . MOST NOVA SCOTIA STAMPS The word "herring-choker" was new to me when I first vis ited sorae cousins of mine near Gloucester, Mass. I heard it there from some fishermen on the docks, and not wishing to dis play my ignorance by asking them what it meant, I decided to ask Cousin Abbe instead. "A herring-choker," she said. "Of course I know what a herring-choker is. It's not a nice word, though an old one. You must have been down by the docks." I admitted I had. "Well," she said. "I am a her ring choker, which is to say a blue nose," and she looked di rectly at me. "But your nose isn',t a blue 'one," I said, much as if to say , that it might be green or purple instead. "Of course not," she said, dis regarding my unfortunate into nation. "Many older men than you have told me it's a very nice nose. But that's neither here nor there. A herring-choker or a blue-nose is just another name for a Nova Scotian. It was in common use years ago." ANTIQUE CHEST EVEN HAS I opened the front door and looked around me with surprise. It was my own front hall, all right. But there In the middle of the floor was the strangest looking chest of drawers I'd ever seen. It consisted of three drawers of unequal length, sur mounted by a pyramidal box. fvnd it had no legs. It just sat there, flat on the floor. One drawer was a little over a foot deep and somewhat more than 30 inches wide. That was the bottom one. On top of it were the other two. They were of much the same depth, but one was only ten inches wide while the other was a little over 20. ' As for the pyramidal box, which proved to be about nine inches deep, it was in the form of an eqalateral triange, each side being about two feet long. One side rested on both top drawers. I studied the box briefly. The bottom side, I noted, was hinged. I recognized him as an antique dealer I hadn't seen for a year or so. He measured the dish with a steel tape. It was a little over six inches long, four wide and better than five feet high, with the cover on. "Hello, Gage," he said, pock eting the tape and taking out his wallet. "Did you have your eye on this, too?" I shook my head. "It's a good thing you didn't," he said, as we moved towards the cash register, "because you won't be so disappointed." "You mean I'm going to be disappointed?" I asked. "I would think so," he said. "If this piece were only clear glass, it would be worth around S300, but as it is, I'll have no difficulty in getting $400 for it." I was disappointed. HAVE HIGH PREMIUM VALUE She turned to a nearby desk, rummaged in its drawer briefly and produced a letter from her grandmother in which the word "herring-choker" had been used. The letter was dated in 1853. I was fascinated by the spidery handwriting, but more so by the stamp. It was a square one, but it stood on its corner, not on a side. It was a dark green, three penny stamp on blue paper. There was a crown in the center surrounded by four flowers. A "3" was in each corner. Along the sides were the words NOVA SCOTIA THREE PENCE. "And they're called 'herring- chokers' because they eat so many herring," continued Cousin Abbe. I was reminded of all this re cently in coming across the let ter again. This time I hurried to look the stamp up because most Nova Scotia items have quite a premium since all of them were issued before it be came part of Canada in 1867. Unfortunately mine was worth only $75, so it's still on its en velope. SECTION FOR COCKED HAT the hinged surface being held in place by a peg. I tried to move the box and couldn't. It was fastened to both top 'drawers. I was wondering what sort of a thing the piece was and just how it happened to get there when my niece Judith came clattering into the hall. "Uncle Pinkney," she said, "isn't it wonderful? I just got it today and for only $50." "And what's that thing on top?" I asked. "Why, it's a cocked hat cup board," she said, giving me an odd look and twisting the peg. The front side of the box fell forward on its hinges, revealing a wooden frame on which one could easily place a cocked hat. "Anyone who was enough of a somebody in Washington's day to have a cocked hat had to have a place to keep it, and I expect to sell this for a very handsome figure to someone who wants to dress up his Revolutionary an cestors," she said.
