MYLEH United Press Correspondent Washington (U.R: Th e blast range of next month's public H-bomb explosion in the Pacific may set a U.S. record. But the shot, scheduled for detonation about May 8 at Bikini, is expected to generate a minimum of dangerous radio active fallout. That is because weaponeers plan to explode the bomb high in the air. High airbursts have greater blast range but produce far less fallout than explosions on or near the surface. The shot of March 1, 1954, showered "hot" fallout on a 7,-000-square-mile mid-Pacific area extending 220 miles downwind from the explosion. The weapon was detonated on the surface of a coral islet which thereupon disappeared. Much of the coral was pulver ized and carried aloft. When it began settling again a few hours after the explosion, this fine dust carried with it the radio active atomic fragments which are the deadly fruit of nuclear fission. High Burst Expected " The high airburst is expected, however, to send the great bulk of Its burden of radioactivity surging into the stratosphere miles above the air layers in which man lives. Once in the stratosphere, the fission fragments will diffuse slowly around the Earth until they have lost their death-dealing intensity. Atomic Commis sioner Willard F. Libby says the average life of such particles before they settle out of the stratosphere is about 10 years. The 1954 incident which caused the biggest international uproar was the dusting of 23 Japanese fishermen with "Bikini ashes." They were 70 to 90 miles from the explosion far closer than any craft will be permitted to come this year. One fisherman died months af terward, and the United States gave Japan $2 million. But this country last month rejected Jap anese requests that new test program be canceled. U.S. offi cials said nuclear weapon de velopment is vital to the free world's safety. They said this year's tests will not harm any body. Fallout Minimized To minimize fallout, and ex tend blast range, nuclear weap ons must be fired high enough to keep the atomic fireball from touching the ground cr the sea. Multimegation weapons, equal in fury to millions of tons of TNT, create gigantic fireballs several miles in diameter. Their surface is as hot as the sun's. If the fireball touches earth or water, millions of tons of vaporized or atomized matters is spewed into the air, and fallout results. Much of the bomb's vio lence is absorbed by contact with the surface if the shot is a low one. In power the May 8 weapon will be "several megatons," pos sibly around 10. To keeD its fireball from touching, the test ers will have to detonate it some 10,000 feet up. Jenner Would Oust Soviet UN Delegate Washington (U.R) Sen. Wil liam E. Jenner said yesterday the State Department should oust Russia's top delegate to the United Nations for his part in the "political kidnaping" of five Russian seamen who returned behind the Iron Curtain. The Indiana Republican, a member of the Senate internal security subcomittee, charged that Arkady Sobolev has "vio lated his functions, duties and re sponsibilities as a diplomatic rep resentative to the United Na tions. Testimony before the subcom mittee, Jenner said, demonstrates that the five Russian seamen were victims of "political kid naping" and that Sobolev was a member of the plot. The five seamen were among a group of nine who sought ref uge in this country last fall after their tanker was interned by the Chinese Nationalists on Formosa. Five of them returned to Russia early this month. Jim Perry Named as Editor of Oregana Eugene Jim Perry, son of Al lan F. Perry, 105 Geneva st., was named editor of the 1957 University of Oregon yearbook, the Oregana, at a recent meeting. Perry, a sophomore in busi ness, served as copy editor of the 1956 annual and as captions assistant in 1955. He is also vice president of Skull and Dagger, sophomore men's honorary. West Virginia is the largest producer of bituminous coal while Pennsylvania ranks in a strong second place. Around Hollywood By ALINC MOSBY United Press Correspondent Employment In Oregon Increases; Medford Lagging Salem (U.R) Springtime em ployment in Oregon showed good gains in recent weeks, ac cording to the State Unemploy ment Compensation Commission. Claims for compensation drop ped nearly 50 per cent from early March, the commission said, reflecting seasonal expan sion in trade, service and miscel laneous manufacturing rather than in basic timber and food industries. Despite job gains in plywood which kept the industry at a summertime level, over-all em ployment in wood products was lower in March than at any time during the winter and about 22, 000 under last year's high. Medford Logging Lagging in the seasonal pick up were many western Oregon areas including Eugene, Med ford, Oregon City, Roseburg, "Salem, Lebanon, Astoria and Coos Bay. Claims also were higher at Bend and Pendleton, although most eastern Oregon offices reported improvements. Shorter work weeks in most manufacturing lines resulted in slightly lower average earnings in March of $88.86 for 110,000 production workers as against $89.81 in February. Construction workers aver aged $105.08 a week. North Korea Premier Said To Be Purged Seoul U.R) The Republic of Korea's foreign ministry has re ported rumors reaching Seoul through diplomatic channels say the Communists have purged Premier Kim II Sung of North Korea. A spokesman said the report was cabled by an unidentified Asiatic government to its am bassador in Seoul, who asked the foreign ministry for confirma tion. . Kim presided Monday atjhe opening session of a Communist convention in Pyongyang which defied the Kremlin's r current anti-Stalin line by beginning its meeting with a silent, standing salute to the late Soviet Premier Josef Stalin. Hollywood (U.R) Marilyn Monroe's ex-drama coach has taken on another new "find" that she wants to make into a star. This rugged thespianis Ronnie Knox, a 21-year-old hero of the UCLA foot ball team. He's world's only Aline Mosbr movie actor who will have to ask for time off next fall so he can play foot ball again. Many an athlete is turning to show business these days. Ron nie, only a junior at UCLA, took on another career when MGM signed him to a long-term contract. Young Knox is taking no chances. Besides going three times a week to MGM's acting school, he signed, up on the side with Natasha Lytess, the drama coach who is credited with every gesture and line Marilyn Mon roe has done in the movies. So far Ronnie still sounds like an exuberant football player Soviet Sailors Claim Detention Attempt Moscow (U.R) Five Soviet sailors have charged that U. S. officials tried "all means" to force them to remain in the United States after they decided to return to the Soviet Union. The sailors, crewmembers of the Soviet tanker Tuapse, said in a news conference that U. S. immigration officials, police and representatives of the "World Church Service" attempted to dissuade them from returning to the USSR. The sailors said the author ities told them "all kinds of hor rors, even death, awaited" them in Russia. The United States yesterday ousted two Soviet delegates to the United Nations on charges of improper conduct in the re turn of the five sailors from New York three, weeks ago. He is tall and has curly blond hair. Natasha says he is "very sensitive, especially for an ath lete, and very promising." In fact, in contrast to the Rocks and Marions, he is the most un ique of the new actors. I had a date to meet Ronnie in a fancy restaurant. He came bounding in wearing a sport shirt and a sweater tied around his neck. The head waiter quick ly banished us out the front door. "I'm kind of a happy jack squirrel," said Ronnie, which translated means he's taking his new MGM contract in stride. Eligibility Retained "Sure, I'm "playing football next fall for my senior year. "I've always wanted to be an actor. At UCLA I enrolled in the Theater Arts Department. A friend of my father's who's an agent told MGM about me, I guess." To young Knox acting is like football in that it requires "con centration." His fellow players on the team think his two car eers have another similarity, too. "They've always said I've been pretty much of a ham," he grin ned. Brazilian Policemen Protected From Thieves Ric De Janeiro (U.R) The city's policemen will be better protected from pickpockets un der a new pay system started Wednesday. All officers must now go to headquarters for their money instead of going to district pre cincts as heretofore.
