Xev U.R Gene Littler, the 25-year-old ex-sailor, is ready to give the country's top professionals another lesson on how to play a flat, windy golf course. Littler tees off in the second round of the S37.500 Tourna ment of Champions today hold ing a two-stroke lead over his 21 competitors a better posi tion than he was in last .year when he went on to win this event by 13 strokes. Thursday he was the only man in 'the field of champions to break par. and he did it by two strokes. He was out in 34 and in 36 for a 70 on a course swept by 40-mile-an-hour winds, It took top-notch putting to stay in the race. Tied at even par 72 were Doug Ford, the PGA champion from Mahopac, N.Y., Ted Kroll, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla and Shelley Mayfield, Westbury, N.Y. Krolf had a hot putter, too, knocking in four from distances of greater than 13 feet. Flock of 74s ' Veteran Henry Ransom, St. Andrews, 111., had a 73 and then came a flock of 74s. There were some disappoint ments in the going, too. Dr. Cary Middlecoff, who teed off as the 4-1 betting favorite, came in with a sky-high 79 complain ing about unfair placing of the pins on the greens. Tommy Bolt had troubles with his game and the galleries, as usual and came in with an 81. And National Open champion Jack Fleck, playing with Bolt, had to be content with an 82 high score for the day. The men with 74 were Chand dler Harper, Portsmouth, Va., Arnold Palmer, Latrobe, Pa., . Frank Stranahan, Toledo, Ohio and Mike Fetchick, Mahopac, :N. Y. Eagle Point Invitational Track Encounter Tit list Rogue River Eagle Point high school's potent track squad, paced by 'Wayne Christian and Gale Friend, won a rain soaked Rogue River invitational meet here yesterday, besting six other schools. Christian in the discus and javelin and Friend in the high jump and pole vault were dou ble winners as the Eagles piled up 173 points. Phoenix followed with 123 and St. Mary's of Med ford was third with 82. Rogue River scored 77 1415, Jack sonville 48. Illinois Valley 30 35 and Prospect 15 13. Eagle Point nabbed eight of the possible 18 first places. Delmar Brood in his low hur dle and 100 yard dash heats was the other double winner of the meets, taking two of Fhoenix4 high's three firsts. St. Mary's also- took three first, George Darland won the quarter-mile in :55 flat. Bill Ca rey the half-mile in 2:13.4, and Hannon one heat of the high hurdles in :19.6. Christian Sets Marks Christian heaved the javelin 163 feet 9 inches for a new meet mark and his discus throw of 139-6 also set a new standard for the invitational. Friend went 6 feet in the high jump and 10 feet in the vault. Other Eagle wins were Dick Wallace 41-5?4 in the shot put; McDonald, Pettigrew, McClure and Greb 1:41.5 in the relay; Jack Greb :10. in the 100 heat. and Ralph McClure :24.7 in a 220 heat. .. Brood ran the low sticks in :23.2 and the 100 in :10.6. Llew ellyn White won a 220 heat for Phoenix in :24.1. Don Vannice, Prospect, had a low hurdle heat win in :24.1 and Ron Muir, Jacksonville, ran the mile in 5:02 to tie the record. Alfred Vanscoter won a high hurdle heat in :18.9 for Rogue River and Gray Stewart, Rogue River, took the broad jump with 19-10. Eagle Point won a trophy from the Bil Hatch company. Rogue River will be host at 4:30 p.m. next Wednesday to the Jackson County B league track meet. MEDFORDiTRIBUNE SIP .GRID SERIES SET Evanston, 111. The first game :will serve as Northwestern's home opener while the second game will be played at Norman Okla. Pancho Gonzales Widens Net Lead -Sherbrooke, Que. (U.R) Pancho Gonzales widened his lead over Tony Trabert last night before 1650 tennis fans at the arena by defeating the rookie pro player in straight sets,- 6-4, 12-10. The result gave Gonzales a 63-18 lead in the Jack Kramer spGn sored tour. Pancho Segura downed Aussie Rex Hartwig, 8-6, in a single set. UO Frosh Vie At Ashland Ashland Southern Oregon college and Oregon Tech of the Oregon Collegiate Conference will be faced with some stiff rivalry here Saturday afternoon in track and field. They'll oppose the star-laden Oregon Frosh contingent. Sev eral members of the Portland Track and Field club also will run a' unattached performers. The meet starts at 2 p.m. The Ducklings boast such standout ex-preppers as Mary Robbins, who's running the two- mile, Jim Grelle, half-mile star and Gene Stoutt, miler, and Jim Amble, discus record holder Glen Allison, ex-Medford, likely will face Robbins and Dick Gustafson probably will run the mile for Southern Ore gon. Chuck Crandall, unbeaten in the half-mile for SOC, may face Grelle. It is felt that with the Duck ling stars, Southern Oregon col lege is presenting the outstand ing track attraction of the week end in this area. Portland Netters Defeat Oregon Portland (U.R) Portland University's tennis team made it 73 victories in a row yester day by defeating Oregon 6-1 here. It was win number 13 of the current season. Gun Club Here Closed Over This Week End Medford Gun club will be closed Sunday in order that shooters here may attend a regi stered tourney at Roseburg. The traps here will be open on Saturday, May 5, for a shoot ing school On Sunday, May 6, the Ed Pease handicap will be fired. There will be skeet and 16-yard piactice. HOOD HIGH MAN Don Hood, Grants Pass, won the plank and mount-and-drag races and the golf ball pick-up and tied for second in the hill climb last week end for high point honors in Road Runner Motorcycle club road races near Roseburg.
