TEN MEDrORD (ORESOK) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday, April 26, 1958 Ari Collection Decorates Walls Of Bank in Texas Midland, Tex (U.R) A bank with bare walls is just an other bank but a bank with beautiful paintings well, that's something special. This was the thinking behind one of the finest art collections in West Texas. The collection is housed in the First National bank of Midland, the largest in the sprawling Permian Basin oil area. The collection was started 20 years age by the late Marvin C. Ulmer, former president of the bank and long-time Midland mayor. He was one of the lead ers in Midland's growth from a small cattle town to a leading financial center of the oil in dustry. John P. Butler, president of the bank, recalls the beginning of the collection, which now in cludes approximately 35 paint ings. "Mr. Ullmer's thinking was that, rathei; than have bare walls, we should adorn them with beautiful paintings," Butler said. Idea Appreciated "The people appreciated the idea, and, as the banking room was enlarged, we continued to buy additional paintings." The pictures are on display on all four walls of the main floor banking room, on the second floor, and in the bank's directors' room. The bank leaves its lights on at night, and blinds are adust ed so the pictures can be seen from the street. Butler says this is done so visitors walking by may view the art collection. "Many times they will come in the next day to see the paint ings," Butler added. One space is reserved for a "painting of the month," a spe cial feature added to the collec tion in 1949. This space fea tures the only picture on display which does not belong to the ' bank. A different painting obtain ed through an art dealer is shown each month. Press and ra dio publicize the "painting of the month" when it goes on dis play. Currently, the bank is show ing "Friesian Girl wtih Cradle," by a 19th centuhy Dutch artist, Christoffel Bisschop. Variety of Styles Although the First National collection covers a variety of styles and subjects, there is a predominance of western and landscape paintings. These in clude western horse pictures by Harold Bryant, and mountain scenes by Fremont Ellis, a New Mexico artist. Most of the paintings are oils, but there is one water color by Peter B. Hurd. The collection al so includes a painting by the French artist, Cachoud. Other painters featured include Chaun cey F. Ryder, Paul King, Thom as Moran, and Robert Wood. Butler emphasized that none of the paintings is for sale. Despite several expansion and modernization projects in recent years, the First National has be gun to outgrow its present bank ing facilities at the corner of Wall avenue and Main street, where it has been since its founding in 1890. The bank last year acquired half a block of land two blocks to the west, and a new building is to be erected beginning this fall. .fians for trie new bank are still in preparation, but Butler says "some of the paintings will be moved into our new building because they provide pleasant surroundings." hree Virtual Unknowns Seek Wayne Morse's Seat in Senate By JACK KERR Portland 'U.R) Everyone in Oregon knows Doug McKay and Phil Hitchcock are contending for the Republican U. S. Sena torial nomination in the May 18 primary and Sen. Wayne Morse is seeking reelection as a Demo crat. Little has been written or said about GOP Candidates Elmer Deetz and George Altvater and Morse's Democratic opponent, Woody Smith. None has done any extensive campaigning and none is widely known around the state. Hunters Otlen Waste Valuable By-Product Ann Arbor !U.R) Deer hunt ers often waste a valuable by product of their success because they don't know how to treat buckskin, according to Prof Warren W. Chase, of the Univer sity of Michigan. Jackets, gloves, mittens, shirts and pocketbooks can be made from properly finished skins, he pointed out. Chase said the hunter should make sure all flesh and fat is re moved from the skin and place it hair down on a flat surface. Then medium coarse or ordinary table salt should be rubbed into the skin, using at least two pounds of medium coarse salt or four pounds of table salt. Allow the skin to dry and send it to a tannery. The tannery will charge about S3.50 for a medium-sized skin, and when it is finished the hunter will have useful material. VvOULD RETIRE HORSE Memphis, Tenn. The opera "Salome" was subjected to considerable criticism on the grounds of im propreity. In discussing this criti cism, Miss Garden once ob served, "When I think of what goes on in such operas as 'Faust,' 'Louise' and 'Aphrodite,' I 'Salome' strikes me as pretty tame by comparison." Best known is Deetz, the Can by "gallon-jug" dairyman, who gained a certain amount of fame by defying the late Oregon Milk Marketing Administration. Deetz contended he had a right to sell millcby the jug from cow to con sumer. The administration said he didn't. Deetz took his fight to the voters, won a seat in the Legislature and led a successful battle to abolish the state's milk control laws and put the Milk Administration out of business. Deetz has been critical of the state's GOP leaders and the has at least one supporter in the Democratic ranks. Sen. Richard L. Neuberger said liberal Re publicans should vote for Deetz because he is conducting a clean campaign." So far, how ever, Deetz iiasn't done or said much which has been brought to the attention of the voters. Altvater is a civil engineer employed by the city of Port land. He is a bachelor and has lived in Oregon for five years. He has done no campaigning in his first bid for public office. In his only statement made public since he filed his candid acy, Altvater said he felt he was "more suitable to represent the people of Oregon than the other candidates or the incumbent" because "all of the other candi dates are too far detached from the issues to serve the people properly." He said he filed for a federal office because he felt the sen atorial race should be decided on the issue rather than on per sonalities. He said he didn't try for local office because he is relatively unknown in the state. Not True Democrat Smith, a 44-year-old Hood River garageman, has confined his activities to several attempts to have Morse's name removed from the ballot. Smith, whose full name is Woodrow Wilson Smith, contends Morse is not a true Democrat and therefore it is illegal for his name to be on the Democratic ballot. So far, Smith's efforts have been unsuc cessful, but he's still in there trying. In the only statement on his candidacy he has issued up to now, Smith said if elected he will work to re-establish the two party system in Oregon. He ad vocates private competitive en terprise and supports "equal rights for all Americans regard less of race, creed or birthplace of parents."
