t Hitchcock Speaks To Labor; McKay Says Morse Indifferent By UNITED PRESS Phil Hitchcock carried his campaign for the Republican nomination for U.S. senator to organized labor yesterday while his opponent, Douglas McKay, continued to criticize Sen. Wayne Morse, the Democrat both would like to defeat in November. Hitchcock told about 50 mem bers of the Teamsters union in Portland that "you rank and file union members need a man in the United States Senate who is not afraid to speak out against union racketeers for fear that political contributions will De taken away from him." He said fci. rtirf nnt helieve that all union men were Democrats. Many of them, he said, vote Republican "primarily to demonstrate to those who are trying to force you to vote otherwise that you are free Americans." Mors Charged McKay, speaking at Milwau kie last night, charged Morse with "utter indifference to the nation's welfare and security in his reckless pursuit of headline prominence." McKay said that he had be came acquainted with legisla tors and heads of government agencies during his tenure as in terior secretary and that the re lationship "would put me in an excellent position to be effec tive from Oregon, if you send me back as your senator." Sen. Richard L. Neuberger again attacked Oregon's voting law which requires two signa tures at the polls. The Oregon Democrat said it would "dis courage people from voting." He took issue with Gov. Elmo Smith that the law was like that of 22 other states. He said he had received a letter from Dr. Richard S. Childs, chairman of the National Municipal league in which he said "What the pur pose is of the Oregon system of having voters sign twice at the polls I cannot imagine, and we have . . . encountered no other state which includes that fea ture . . ." Gov. Elmo Smith, speaking to the Junior Chamber of Com merce in Portland, pointed out the danger of relying on income taxes too heavily. A proper tax program, he said, must "be equitable for our citizens to pay and we must not tax beyond our ability to finance state govern ment in case of a business re cession." if idk So smooth it leaves you breathless mirtioff tfu qreaiest -name VODKA 90 proof. Christian Science Lecturer Talks Here Peace of mind and peace in the world depend on the honest ef forts of men and women to un derstand and apply spiritual laws of God, Ralph Castle, Belvedere Calif., said last night. Castle spoke under the aus pices of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Medford. He presently is on an extended tour as a member of the Christian Science board of lectureship. He spoke on "Christian Science: The Law Govering True Self-Expres- sion." ; By relying on divine laws, he said, people find that they over come fear, boredom, and tension and discover that lasting peace is a "gift direct from God, divine love, to each individual." "The divine fact regarding man's real nature is that he is wholly spirit ual, the expression of God." he said. Peace is everybody's business, he said, pointing out that "if we are to contribute to the peace of the world, the nation, the church, the community, or the family the place to stare is with ourselves, in our own conscionsness." Castle declared that the prob lem of how to prevent war and the rumors of war can not be solved through governmental ac tion and cooperation alone, but that the solution lives "mainly with .each individual." Man's greatest need at this time, he said, is to know more about the true relationship between God and man. (If Div ' ,AT I J SHOP UiihhiT lliirn! Lemay wants "sub stantially more" B-52 intercon tinental jet bombers for his Strategic Air Command than proposed by the administration, defense sources said today. The blunt-spoken, cigar-chomping Lemay, who has been pressing the Pentagon for more long-range jet bombers, took his case before Congress today. A Senate Armed Services subcommittee on air power call ed Lemay for secret questioning about whether the Strategic Air Command (SAC) is in danger of losing its air supremacy to Rus sia. With Lemay, the subcommit tee had reached the heart of its inquiry. Democrats who prompt ed the investigation made no secret of the fact that their num ber one target is to increase B-52 production. Several Proposals Defense sources said that Le may in the past year has sub mitted several proposals to the Pentagon all, calling for far more B-52 bombers than plan ned by the administration. While Lemay has not request ed any specific number of B-i defense sources said he has out lined requirements for two to three times as many more jet bombers than provided for In the administration program. The administration plan calls for a fleet of about 500 B-52s to be completed by 1959. Lemay was said to be gunning for 500 to 1000 more of the giant, $8, 000,000 bombers. There were three main factors behind Lemay's demand for more intercontinental jet bomb ers: 1. Russia is currently produc ing more long-range jet bomb ers, and there is no hope of the United States catching up un less goals are expanded and pro duction accelerated. 2. The present fleet of 1500 B-47 medium jet bombers is de pendent upon overseas bases which are unreliable militarily and politically. 3. More than any other bomb er, the high-flying B-52 has a capability to penetrate deep into Russia and hit its target. The administration moved re cently to boost B-52 production. But Sen. Henry M. Jackson (D Wash.), a subcommittee member, said that even with this increase "the United States will still lag seriously behind the Soviet Un ion in the intercontinental jet bpmber field."
