2,600 Expected at Music Contest at Southern Oregon Ashland More than 2,600 grade and high school music stu dents -will converge on Southern Oregon college camDus ADril 27- 28 for annual district music con tests sponsored by the Southern Oregon Musical Education as sociation. Bands, orchestras, and cho ruses from Klamath ,Falls, Phoenix, Myrtle Creek, Riddle, Roseburg, Eugene, Cave Junc - tion. Talent Jacksonville, Malin, Medford, and Henley, already have registered with Oscar C. Bjorlie, head o the SOC music department, chairman of the event. Judges Listed Critiques and judges for the contests are Sam Smith, Clark college, Vancouver, Wash.; Dr. "William Swettman, director of musical education, Salem; Robert Walls, Oregon State college; Frank Anardi, supervisor of music, Tacoma, Wash.; Dan Backman, Humbolt State college, Areata, Calif.; and Charles Wil son Lawrence, University of Washington, Seattle. On Friday .night, bands, or chestras, and choruses from the larger schools will compete for musical honors, with the smaller schools to be featured through out the day's program and Sat urday morning. Fifth in Election Board Schools Set Fifth in the series of schools of instruction for election board members will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Crater High school library, according to Mrs. Bereth Hopkins, Jackson county clerk. Scheduled to attend the Thurs day session are board members from precincts 69, 70, 71, 71A and 72. Mrs. Hopkins explained that any board member who is unable to attend the session scheduled for his precinct may attend any other scheduled school of instruction in the county. Other classes are slated at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Shady Cove school for precincts 23 through 27 inclusive and at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Monday in the court house auditorium for precincts 28 through 61 inclusive, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 81, 82, 83, and 84. Instruction schools have al ready been held in the Ashland, Eagle Point, Sams Valley, Gold Hill, Rogue River and Wimer precincts. GUESTS SURPRISED Shreveport, La. U.R) Army Lt. United States To Explode H-Bomb In Air for First Time Next Month Editor's Note: Joseph L. Myler, the author of the following dispatch, specializes in reporting on atomic matters for the United Press. He is one of the 15 American newsmen who will witness and report on next month's H-bomb demonstration in the Pacific. j By JOSEPH L. MYLER f United Press Correspondent ' Washington (U.R) This coun try will explode a giant H-bomb high in the air for the first time next month. The test weapon will be a de vice that could as well be adapt ed to mammoth long-range mis siles as to intercontinental bomb ers. The explosion will be wit nessed by 15 American news men at Bikini about May 8 in the world's first "public" H-bomb demonstration. The Soviets say their big test of last Nov. 22 was an "airburst," the first time in history that an H-bomb was dropped from a plane. Could Hit Any Point Russia's Nikita Krushchev also said in England Monday that his country will "quickly" have an intercontinental missile with a hydrogen warhead "which could hit any point in the world." U.S. officials do not doubt Rus sia can build a hydrogen war head for a missile guided, long- range, ihort-range, or whatnot. But Air Secretary JJonaia a. Quarles indicated he believes it will take both Russia and the United States five to 10 years to perfect intercontinental ballis tics missiles capable of hurling H-bomb warheads to remote tar gets in a matter of 30 minutes or so. Big bombers, he says are still the prime reliance of both nations for H-bomb delivery. Khrushchev's claim put new urgency into a Senate investiga tion of whether the United States is falling behind Russia in the race for air supremacy. A special Senate armed service sub committee headed by Sen. Stuart Symington (D-Mo.) recalled Allen Dulles, director of the Cen tral Intelligence Agency yester day for a third day of -secret testimony on Russian air power developments. Symington, a long-time critic of administration defense polic ies, said Khrushchev's claim was a "terrible warning to the United States and the free world if true. Says 'Quite Probable' Chairman Clinton P. Anderson (D-N.M.), of the Congressional Atomic Energy Commission said he believes it "quite probable" that Russia is building an inter continental missile. Once built, he said, it would "not be too great a difficulty" to add a hy drogen bomb warhead. Building the warhead, officials agree, is much less of an engi neering problem than building the rocket-powered missile to carry it long distances. The United States for a couple of years has been stockpiling H-bombs designed for delivery by airplane. Meanwhile, it is spending billions on many vari eties of missiles, including the US Soldier Missing In Old Fortress Verdun, France (U.R) Amer ican troops and French resist ance fighters searched the miles long underground passageways of an ancient French fortress to day for a young American sol dier who went inside four days ago for a look around and van ished. The soldier, Specialist Second Class Gerald Dunnigan, 22, of Winimico, Va., was feared to have injured himself in a fall inside the abandoned fortress and wandered in a daze into one of the unmapped corridors that twist for miles. Barbara Lou, his 21-yer-old wife who is as freckle-faced as Punnigan, kept vigil outside the squat grey fortress, an aban doned relic that sits under the brow of a low hill, almost invis ible to enemy guns. She was vis iting there Saturday when Dun nigan told her to wait while he loked inside. He never returned. illy Plea Made In Portland Robbery Portland (U.R! -John Simon, 21, yesterday pleaded guilty to last Wednesday's S3800 robbery of the Sixth and Morrison branch of the First National Bank here. In another case, Joseph Walsh, 45, pleaded guilty to the at tempted robbery last January of the Metropolitan branch of the U. S. National Bank. Federal Judge Gus Solomon delayed sentencing of both pend ing a probation office investigation. Simon was arrested by the FBI several hours after last week's holdup.
