TOUHTEEIT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Annual Exhibit of Art Under Way at High School Here A visit to the fourth annual exhibit of the Medford High school art show this week at the school can be an interesting ad venture and one does does not need to know or especially en joy art. For it will be interesting to learn methods and steps used in instruction, what instructors are trying to do and visitors en courage students who have on display their best work done during the school year. Twenty of the pieces won prizes in this spring's National Scholastic art competition at Portland. The public has been invited to see the exhibit each after noon this week, and Thursday, ' April 26, instructors and stu dents will conduct visitors through the show during open house from 2 to 5:30 p.m. 200 Pieces About 200 pieces make up the exhibit. Included are various phases done in the art depart ment, fashion and industrial de signs, sculpting, oils, pen and ink, pencil sketches and water colors. Scultping includes stabiles, or structural studies in building form in space, a phase of archi tecture and interior design; ex periment in organic lines which reflect nature; graphics, done with sponge technique and lines; linoleum block work com bined with paints; brayer prints with line drawings; collage, the art of building pictures from paper; architectural drawings to conform to specific surround ings; Christmas decorative com positions; figure drawings; let tering; structural architecture designs; mosaics, formed by chips of paper; studies in color theory, and texture studies, in light and dark; india ink work, in the wash and run technique, nd others. All are original ideas of the ttudents. Warsaw Arrests Security Pair London (U.R) Warsaw Radio announced today the ar rest of two top members of Po land's Ministry of Public Secur ity. It was the second major purge to ' hit that Communist country in a week. The broadcast said the two officials arrested were Roman Romkiwski, former deputy min ister of public security, and Anatoli Fejgin, a former director in the. Ministry of Public Secur ity. v. They were accused of depriv ing . "innocent peoples of their freedom," a charge made recent ly by several Communist coun tries against officials who hewed too closely to the Stalin line. It coincided with a move in Moscow to "rehabilitate" the past victims of Communist Party purges and a move to downgrade Andrei Y. Vishinsky, the prose1 cutor at the big purges of the 1930s when thousands of old line Bolsheviks were liquidated Poland, which recently fired its minister of justice and two prosecutors, announced on Sun day 30,000 persons would be freed from prison under an am nesty and that the sentences of 70,000 others would be reduced. Willamette Jet Base Location Near Salem (U.R) State Trea surer Sig Unander said today he expected final congressional and Air Force action on loca tion of the air force's $15,000, 000 Willamette valley jet base in the very near future. Plans for the state's Portland area mental hospital and inter mediate penal institution are awaiting a decision on the jet base. Unander said it was his un derstanding that the Air Force had already picked a site for the bast and that the appro priation bill for the base had passed iust about all congress ional hurdies. The treasurer said that as soon as the bill was voted on and signed by the President, it should be "just a matter of hours" before state officials were notified. Portland Boys Held On Car Theft Charge Salem OJ.R) Three Portland youths, 14-16, were in Marion county jail today accused of j stealing and wrecking a Salem car after a 100-mile-an-hour chase along the old Albany-Cor- vallis road. The boys were "awol" from a Portland military academy. Albany police arrested the trio Monday night after the fleeing car flipped over on a curve. No one was injured. Roseburg (U.R) It no longer is "mandatory" that prisoners in the city jail wear ball and chain. Also in line with the changing times, citizens can now "legally" pay fines and license fees in cur rency other than gold or silver coins. The changes are a result of a city council meeting that re pealed several statutes that have been on the books since 1900. Also perfectly legal now is to pay the city marshal more than $50 per month. My wife's sister is mar ried to a man who was a school mate of mine and who has been unable to practice his profession because he became dumb about five years ago as the result of unsuccessful surgery. Because of this disability his wife has ob tained a job as a file clerk. What money they had is now about exhausted and they will not be able to live on the money she earns. Because of the piti ful circumstances I have been able, with the help of some rel atives and friends, to obtain an appointment for the husband to a City Hall job that will pay him a fair salary. I thought he would be overjoyed at the pros pect of financial security, but he angrily rejects this offer. He says he will accept a job in his own field, but will not ac cept a sinecure. This strikes me as a false position for him to take for two reasons: First, he has no right to be so proud at the expense of his wife and, sec ond, he could do some useful work for his pay if he were de termined to do so. It was our first mis fortune that we could not have children, but I thought I was compensating myself somewhat by taking full advantage of the fact that I did not need to earn much money in my profession to supoort the two of us. As a result I was very choosy in ac cepting clients as a lawyer, tak ing only cases that interested me. Since I lost my speech, I have been utterly without any prac tice because I never built up a busy office and took only court matters requiring the use of my voice. I feel that I would be degrading my wife as well as myself if I were to accept this appointment. THE COUNCIL: There is some validity to this man's ob jection, but it is difficult to un derstand why he is so unable to help himself. There are many people with far greater impedi ments who manage to earn a self-respecting livelihood. We would heartily applaud this man's rejection of a politi cal sinecure if it were accom panied by an earnest effort at self-help. He has no right to put the burden of earning a liv ing to his wife, who is appar ently lacking in graining to earn an adequate salary. He should master his false pride and over sensitivity, and look for work in his own profession. There is surely plenty of paper work in law offices for him to do. His relatives should place the responsibility where it belongs on the man who is allowing self-pity to degrade him and bur den his wife. Even if he did not have a profession, there are many opportunities for earning a livelihood open to men with his problem. He should be brought to realize that he is run ning out on all the people who wish him well, including his wife. PONTIAC PHONE 2-5241 Two of New York Quadruplets Die New York (U.R) A n x i o u s doctors and nurses maintained a tense vigil today over an incu bator where the two surviving Medina quadruplets fought for their lives. Doctors -said there was a "good chance' the two girls born Monday to Mrs. Carmen Medina, 25, would escape the death that claimed their pathetically tiny brothers but nevertheless ex pressed concern. "I have a pain in my heart." the father, Ciprian Medina, 27, said Tuesday , when informed that the first boy, Angelo, two pounds 15 ounces, had died. "I was so very happy." Then Tuesday night, Leonard, three pounds three ounces, died. He had been named for Dr. Leonard Hirsch, who presided over the birth of the quads to the 96-pound Mrs. Medina. Doctors said the two surviving girls Muriel, two pounds, seven ouncss, and Elba Luz, three pounds had "good color" and their lungs seemed in good condition early today. But the doctors said it would be a see saw battle to suve the two girls because of their weakened con dition. "A lot depends now on their first feeding Thursday or Fri day," one doctor said, "that's a critical period." Muriel, the tiniest quad, was named for Nurse Muriel Peluso, who helped at the birth. Doctors had expected her to be the weak est of he four but so far she has proved the strongest, they said. An extra-cost option.
